SPIDER-MAN: MILES MORALES Review; "An Incredible Experience...You'll Want To Go Back And Play Again And Again"

The PlayStation 5 was launched in the UK last week, so we now have our spoiler-free review of Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the next-gen system. Does it live up to expectations? Without a doubt...

Spider-Man: Miles Morales might not be as grand in scale as 2018's Spider-Man, but it more than makes up for that with a wonderful, inspiring story that establishes Miles as being every bit as worthy of being called Spider-Man as Peter Parker (comic book and movie fans already knew that, of course, but it's now the case for video games as well). Serving almost as an extended demo for what the PlayStation 5 is capable of, this is a jaw-droppingly beautiful game which it's impossible to tear your eyes from (just make sure you have a 4K HDR TV). It's hard not to get caught up in just how damn good the city looks, and if this is an indication of what we can expect from the next generation of consoles...well, we're in for a treat.

With Peter heading off to Symkaria alongside Mary Jane Watson for a working vacation, New York is solely under the protection of the inexperienced Miles, so it's now up to him to prove he can be Spider-Man without his mentor keeping an eye on him. Unfortunately, just as Peter leaves, the young wall-crawler finds himself caught in the middle of a war between Roxxon and The Tinkerer's Underground. What follows is a surprisingly personal, action-packed adventure which firmly establishes Miles as a hero it's going to be hard not to play as all the time when the inevitable Spider-Man sequel is released.

Between the clumsy way he swings around the Big Apple to his Venom and camouflage abilities, Miles is a very different Spider-Man to Peter in more ways than one, and that makes this a refreshing, thrilling experience. Finding yourself surrounded by Roxxon goons, it's immensely satisfying sending them all flying with a well-timed Venom blast, while taking out a warehouse full of bad guys is even more enjoyable when you can turn invisible and pick them off from up close. Even beyond the action, exploring Miles' home life, friendships, and place in his newfound home of Harlem is fascinating to explore. It's definitely a shame the campaign isn't slightly longer, but there are a tonne of enjoyable side-missions and collectibles which will distract you and, honestly, it's just fun exploring this stunning update of New York. With any luck, though, we'll get some DLC in the not too distant future.

An improved Photo Mode, less repetitive crimes, and a New York that feels truly alive are all additional highlights, and prove that the Spider-Man franchise is in the best possible hands with Insomniac Games. We can only hope that the plan now is for Peter and Miles to star in their own respective franchises because they're too good to share a game, and the latter proves here that he needs, and deserves, to be more than just a sidekick or spinoff.

With a spectacular soundtrack and some of the best visuals we've ever seen in a video game, Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an incredible experience, and one which you'll want to go back and play again and again.

Once all the craziness of US Covid Christmas 2020 dies down(fingers crossed).... then I can make my move to the PS5. It’s too bad the Avengers game didn’t get the kind of thorough/detailed treatment Insomniac gives their Spider-Man games. *sigh*

I am almost finished...hate how short it is. The story is absolutely AMAZING and better than Spiderman PS4 in my opinion.

They knocked this out of the park!

Is MM a DLC or a brand new sequel?

@GothamSon - Somewhere in between. I'd say it feels longer than one of the first game's DLC's. I'm taking my time with the story missions so as not to let myself down. It's worth the price for sure, a lot of fun and not the price of a full game.

@SpideyPuffsMJ - Okay cool thanks.

Really wish there weren't so many stock issues with PS5, especially scalpers mass-buying consoles using bots and then selling for 3x the RRP trying to rip off people who couldn't preorder in time.

Looking forward to playing this game in 2022 when there's finally more stock available. And if Miles and Peter DO eventually share a sequel, it'll have to be a HUGE game to justify both of them sharing the spotlight and to do them both justice.

Trying not to finish it as I know I'm getting close but it's too damn fun, just like its predecessor. I like the idea of Miles and Peter having two separate franchises, Miles can carry his own and I want to see the symbiote saga play out in the sequel with Miles playing as much of a support role as Peter did in this game. Super fun game though, a lot of hard work went into this to get it out as soon as they did for next-gen and it runs smooth as hell.

Insomniac cranked out this banger in like a little over a year. Crystal Dynamics/Square Enix had what like 5 years to make Avengers worth your money? Much bigger game, but still, it's clear who chose to focus on character/story/fun gameplay and who chose the live service, loot grabbing Fortnite model to go off of. One is tanking money, one is thriving.

Only thing I disliked about it was just how predictable the story is. The original game had a few twists I did not see coming, unlike ths one. Maybe it's because this was too short (for a video game) so they had to go with the simplest version of the story? IDK. Still enjoyable, though, it's not that it was a BAD story

10/10 game, The way Miles just twirls in the air when you leap off of rooftops is just full of the exaggerated swagger of a black teen

I platinumed the game and was surprised it took me longer than everyone on-line said it would. I think I finished around the 8-10 hour mark. But that's just the way I like to play...I like to collect everything I possibly can before finishing a game.

Fun game and cool story just a little too glitchy for me right now. I got about halfway through before I stopped, I’ll be swinging through the city then randomly phase through a wall and get stuck. I’m waiting for an update to fix this issue before I finish to avoid losing my temper. Lots of glitches on the PS4 version.

Waiting for a price cut on the PS4 version, in the meantime i'm replaying Spider-Man since they added the suits from the remaster and saved me from eventually buying the Ultimate Edition. Good guy Insomniac.

Makes me want the "Into The Spider-verse" sequel even more. That movie was so fun!

I’m not excited by this in the slightest, the character doesn’t do it for me and the whole Spider-verse thing always seems like it’s aimed at little kids. Sorry just my opinion.

Just finished it last night. 10/10 all-around for me, short or not.

The end made me tear up a little, not gonna lie. Having a friend who is basically a sister figure to Miles sacrifice herself like that & finally do the right thing...DAMN what a good story.
