TASM: Marc Webb On Spidey's Redesigned Costume

The director of the upcoming reboot reveals the reason behind Spider-Man's distinctly "homemade" looking outfit, which many fans have had a few problems with..

The first images of Andrew Garfield in his new Spider-Man outfit were met with a bit of a mixed response from fans, and although many have since gotten used to his new look, there are still those who have some problems with it - especially around the feet area. I'm sure you have noticed that Spidey looks to have incorporated a pair of trainers into his red and blue suprehero ensemble, and the reason it looks that way is..he has! While speaking to Total Film the director of The Amazing Spider-Man, Marc Webb, reveals why the suit looks the way it does, and how offers a few details on how Peter Parker went about putting it together..

The all important red-and-blue outfit went through various (re)designs - but crucial to them all, according to Webb, was that they had to look like they were made by one student and his sowing machine.

"His eyes are popped-out lenses from his sunglasses and his feet are threads from shoes. We thought about what material Peter would have access to"

So there you have it. If you were curious as to why Spidey looks the way he does in this movie, it's all part of keeping things a bit more "grounded" I guess. Personally the look has grown on me, but I must admit I preferred the old Raimi design. How bout you guys?

The Raimi design was the best. This is growing on me too though.

It makes sense. Once Peter gets a job with the Bugle maybe he'll be able to get new material, meaning a new suit. I'm just glad the web-shooters are there.

If you're going for homemade, that suit still doesn't cut it. Should be something more like this.

Still doesn't look homemade in the slightest!!! - the first Raimi design, now that was homemade in style!!!

Although this suit is a grower!!

then maybe something along the lines of this...

How will his feet stick to walls? Also, if they are going for a more "home made" look, a simpler design, like the original costume, would make more sense than all those patterns in his glove...

I still think it's pretty advanced to be homemade, here's my design for a more homemade lookin' spidey http://sparrowsabre7.deviantart.com/art/Spider-man-Costume-Concept-2-277268282

The suit could have looked more like the comic suit more so than the Raimi one. A missed opportunity really. Black webbing and the big white eyes. It still could have looked like he made it which, no one should really care about. I think peoples suspension of disbelief is already turned on for a movie like this.

I mean, who's really gonna sit there and be like "That guy's suit is too complicated for him to make. But the high-tech web shooters and Lizard man are totaly believable."

The costume is not that bad, it is a good start, with the right colours and web shooters :)
But compared to the Sam raimis version of spidey, it is not that good. The costume from his version looks like the same from the comics (well, without the web shooters of course)
But I think this is still ok! I like it!

Oh and I actually really like the new suit, not sure if I like it more than Raimi's yet, but it is a hell of a lot more colourful. In SM2 the blue part of the costume was basically black it was so dark.

So how are they going to explain him having all the resources to make web shooters?

And, if you're gowing more a more "real world" feel, maybe having glass lenses when you gonna get punched in the face a lot is not a safe idea...

No explanation can excuse how lame that suit looks.

@BooYah- You forget he's basically a genius. He probably gets it from Oscorp or from Dr.Connors.

@BooYah or left over materials from that trunk of junk his father left in the attic and he just puts it together

They should redesign the suit for the sequel to make it more like the original from Sam Raimi's trilogy, I love the new one but it could still be much better.

Cassidy75

I'm with knossis, the suit in Raimi's Spidey went from sweatshirt and a balaclava to something that looked like a multi-million dollar franchise. Although I must admit Neobaggins is right too, suspension of disbelief should cover the costume...I'm torn, perhaps the context will be the most important part. I said the other week that I thought this had a kick-ass feel to it. It's a gamble, can Spidey be gritty and realistic?

There is no [frick]ing way that that suit looks even remotely home made. And seriously, would a guy actually make himself garters? Come on.

I like how the face looks better than Raimi.. This character is looking more like the comic books. The rest of the costume is cool. I don't hate it.

JDUKE25@ That costume i liked to see on the big screen! [frick]ing awesome!:)
Its gritty and seeing how slack it is it could be made from a jumpsuit if you have the right tools.
And it has the sneaker bottoms too.
Hundred times better than the two movie versions.

We are suppose to suspend disbelife when it comes to a web spining wall crawlin superhuman teenager and man lizard, but when it come to clothing material and Pete's sewing skills lets be realistic?!!? Talk about underestamateing an audience....

Yeah, i mean if they say his girlfriend made it for him and didn't want him losing his boots in mid air, fine. But why in heteroheaven would a guy... take his blue pants... and sow bright red garters on them. This isn't Northstar, this is MJ/Gwen/Black Cat [frick]in' Petey we're talking about.
