The Amazing Spider-man and why It has Grown on me

After a long and drawn out thought, I'm actually excited for the Amazing Spider-man.

Last summer, I saw the first official pictures of this summer's new Spider-man addition, The Amazing Spider-man. And at first look, I was all:

I didn't think Andrew Garfield really looked like Peter Parker, and didn't look like he felt like Peter Parker. The atmosphere from those pictures gave off the hint that the Amazing Spider-man was trying to be the next 'Batman Begins'. Then the trailer came out. And it made me care less about the movie. The special effects looked unpolished, the vibe definitely came off as Batman Begins: Spider-man edition. And the last shot really looked like a rip off of Mirror's Image. So my expectations of this movie were real dogshit.

Why? Because I was a fan of the Rami Spider-men (the first two anyway). I thought they were very enjoyable motion pictures, if not repetitve. Spider-man (2002) gave us a solid intro to one of the best Superheroes around. It had it all-humor, stylized action, and all the thrills that were needed in a CBM. In my humble opinion, Tobey Maquire fit the role just fine. He had the nerd part down just perfectly! The second film was a monumental success. It had a much better villain, it got a little more serious, and it really made us feel Spider-man's intentions. The Third, just...no. I mean, it wasn't dogshit, it started off really good in my opinion, I liked the whole Black suit thing and Venom was good...just when he didn't peel his face back and all we saw was Topher Grace. It was just the whole Sandman back story that was not needed and Harry dying was a little unnecessary. It wasn't just that Spider-man 3 tried too hard, it just packed too much substance into a weak storyline and there was definate signs of stress on the edges.

Even with the major letdown of the third installment, I still wasn't ready for a Spider-man movie within the next few years. Idk, I felt that the Amazing Spider-man was a bit rushed coming out, and that we needed a few more years to shake the Rami years. Even when the first trailer was released, many, many people complained about not having the original cast in this new one. The only hate I heard about the Rami Spider-men before I came to this site was mainly on the third film. I had no Idea that so many fanboys hated the trilogy as a whole. I didn't get it really, I mean, the absence of web shooters didn't bother me at all. In fact i didn't care. But after a few interesting articles on this new Spider-man and after that fantastic trailer was released, my thoughts took a complete 180. The big reason why I want to see this film is for the Lizard. We haven't seen him on screen yet. And from the brief snippets in the trailer, he looks awesome, I just wished he had a snout, but I understand the filmmakers doing-they don't want to make it too crazy. While yes the vibe still feels like Batman Begins to me, I loved how it showed how Spidey has that smart ass attitude in this film. Especially when he's mouthing off to the crook who tries to steal a car.

My complaint about the trailer was that i felt it showed a bit too much, I mean, they didn't need to show him getting unmasked by the cops and see him going ape on them. That was unnecessary in my opinion. But overral, it was cool nonetheless.

When I saw the web-shooters, I thought it was awesome. First time we'll be seeing this on the big screen.

In conclusion, at first I wasn't really ready for this film. Yeah, I understand that Rami's spider-men had pretty much ended the saga and that a reboot was indeed necessary, but I felt that if the studio had waited maybe a year or two, then not only me, but countless haters would be able to shake off the Rami years. But after the latest news and speculations that I've read on it and the latest trailer, I'm actually excited for the Amazing Spider-man; excited to the point where I'm more excited for it than the Avengers. Its mainly because I know what to expect in the Avengers-a bunch of awesome action sequences with a weak story (not Transformers weak) . While not my most anticipated movie of 2012, I sure hope the Amazing Spider-man is Amazing, to disprove my first thoughts on this movie last summer. And hopefully it ends up being a success and not like this year's Green Lantern so it gets a guarante Sequel. Because if there is a sequel to the Amazing Spider-man, I want Venom as the villain. Venom without Topher Grace.

This new Spidey has grown on me, and I'm hyped for it.

I haven't said much about this movie, but I've had a good vibe about this film since day one. I was fine with the first trailer when most people hated it and the second trailer gave us a much better feel for the movies tone. I like that we see spiderman at night a lot more. His costume looks better lit at night than in broad day light. His suit I've been a fan of since day one as well. I love that they didn't use the same exact design as Rami's even if it was almost spot on with the comics. I am very open to a directors personal interpretation of any given character. I don't want them to look like they jumped directly off the comic strip. When they do that it kinda gives me the impression that the director isn't that passionate about the movie and they are just giving the fans what they want, not what a movie needs. Cause let's face it, fans don't know shit about movie making. All we contribute to the process is pointing out what we like and don't like about the finished product and we all completely disagree with each other.

Can we please -not- have Venom? I'd much rather see Electro, or Mysterio. Hell, I'd even like to see a different take on the Green Goblin.

@Viltrumite

Or better yet, the Sinister Six! It will be cool to see how they are introduced into the films.

"Mirror's Image" I think you mean Mirror's Edge. I really, really hate when people say that it was a rip off. I don't understand how Mirror's Edge had the idea first? So many games out there have the whole POV in 1st person, so why can't movies incorporate that in some awesome manner (Spidey). Someone even editted some Mirror's Edge clips to *look* like it was from the trailer, but that's really all it was.

I also agree with LoudNoises

How did Tobey Mcguire portray Peter Parker's smart and wise-ass side??? The humore in Raimi's movies was seriously lacking. Peter didn't do much of anything "nerdy", and pretty much cried over MJ the whole time. I'm all for SM and SM2, but this reboot is very welcome, to me. Stripes down the legs aside, I'm happy with the new costume.

Oh, and.... Elektro, Scorpion, Rhino or Mysterio for the sequel, Green Goblin and death of Gwen Stacy for the third, and enter the symbiote with the fourth. Or just give us the goddamn Sinister Six. That could work too.

First things first: I liked your article. I still think that the CGI needs pollishing, but the Spider-man stuff looks fantastic. I know they're going to keep the current design, but again, the CGI needs work. Also, the background doesn't quite mix with the foreground in all the shots. i.e.: the scene on top of Oscorp with the tower.

As for your comment on the Avengers...

I completely disagree about The Avengers having a weak story line. Will it be deep in the way that Christopher Nolan's Batman is deep? Unlikely, Joss Whedon even said that he wanted to make a good old fashioned superhero movie before the entire genre was deconstructed, making references to Watchmen and Kick Ass. This was back in 2010 I think when he said this. What he meant by that was, he wanted to make a movie in the vein of X-Men 2 and the like before it was necessary that every superhero movie turn the genre on its head (like Chronicle, or Kick Ass (again), or Dark Knight even).

However, I do think that Whedon will make a very entertaining movie with a very interesting plot. The man created Firefly, and that show was badass. Even Buffy the Vampire Slayer has a lot of creativity in it. Yes, it's corny and even juvenile, but if you watch it long enough you can see that the man put a lot of wit into that show. But again, Firefly was his crown jewel, and I think that if he can bring the type of story telling into this that he brought into Firefly, then we'll be in for an amazing story.

Yeah Venom is in no way the next logical step after the first film, it makes much more sense to set up Green Goblin, whether he appears in 2 or 3 it doesn't matter but jumping straight to Venom seems out of place.

Although I didn't want a reboot at first as soon as the announced the casting I was onboard.
