Rhys Ifans Will Be Our New Spider-Man Villain!

Well, this came out of nowhere. Its just a shame we still don't know exactly which villain Ifans will be playing..

Here is the official press release..

Commenting on the announcement, Tolmach said, “We have been very fortunate to attract some of the best actors working today to play the villains in the Spider-Man movies, and it is exciting to see that trend continue with Rhys Ifans. After seeing his performance in our upcoming film Anonymous, we’re in awe of his talent and think he’s the perfect choice to take on this role.”

The filmmakers prefer to not reveal which character Ifans will be playing in the forthcoming film.

Webb added, “What sets the Spider-Man villains apart is the complexity of their relationships with Peter Parker. Rhys' incredible ability to embody both warmth and rage makes him the ideal choice for this character."

Spider-Man is being overseen at the studio by Tolmach and Rachel O'Connor. Ifans is represented by United Talent Agency, Brillstein Entertainment Partners, and Independent Talent Group.

RHYS IFANS’ breakout performance came in 1999 in Roger Michell’s Notting Hill, opposite Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant, for which he received a BAFTA Film Award nomination for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role. Prior to that, Ifans starred in Heart, Twin Town, August, and Dancing at Lughnasa, and since then, he has appeared in more than 20 films, including Vanity Fair; Rancid Aluminium,Little Nicky; The Replacements; Hannibal Rising, Enduring Love; Human Nature; Formula 51; Hotel; The Shipping News; Once Upon A Time in the Midlands, Elizabeth: The Golden Age, Pirate Radio; Greenberg; and Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang. He will next appear inMr. Nice, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Passion Play, and Columbia Pictures’ Anonymous, for director Roland Emmerich.

On television, he played the role of Peter Cook in Terry Johnson’s “Not Only But Always,” for which he won the BAFTA TV Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in “A Number.” In the theatre, Ifans has appeared in “Accidental Death of an Anarchist,” “Bad Finger,” “Volpone,” “Under Milk Wood,” “Beautiful Thing,” “Thyesters,” and, most recently, Patrick Marber's adaptation of “Don Juan in Soho” at the Donmar Warehouse.

Many feel that because Stacy is involved, then the film may lead to her death, which would involve The Green Goblin(providing they stick to the comic of course). But since he has already appeared its likely Webb will want to go another route, even though this is a reboot. Venom has also been rumored. What do you folks think? He certainly looks the part for Goblin anyway.

I had to look him up! No Idea who he is! So far, Webb and crew have put together a great duo in Stone and Garfield, so I have faith this is a good decision.

As for who it is...No idea. As Ror mentioned, since they are going with Stacy, I would have to thing Green Goblin. The dude could pull it off.

I have no idea who he is or who he could play. But he seems to be a good actor. The description of "warmth and rage" rings of Curt Connors a bit, although it could certainly be Normy too. I don't think they'll kill Gwen off just yet, I would predict they kill her in the sequel.

I had to look him up as well. The only thing I have seen him in was the Replacements. Frankly I barely remember the film.

Surprised they did not go for a bigger name.

He is a great actor. I have seen about 3 or 4 of his movies. Enduring Love with Daniel Craig will give you an inkling as to how he might play a villainous role.

He's the doorman from Kick Ass! haha

He is really a diverse actor and I could see him in several roles. I thought vulture at first, but he could be a great scorpion, lizard, green goblin, or maybe even kraven. i'm sure he can play whatever they give him

But like Tyler says, Webb's description of !warmth and rage". Its probably someone Spidey is close to, interactswith. I'm betting either Lizard or Goblin myself.

this is the kicker in the Replacements!! one of my favorite movies of all time. hes really funny in that. not sure how funny his character will have to be fro spidey but he is a good actor. good choice. spidey lookin better and better.

Holy shit, I thought they were the same guy lol. Wow they look similar

I had to look the two of them up to see their movies. I still think this guy's good though

Ugh, I'm really not a big fan of this guy. Can he even pull off an American accent!?! I've seen the trailer for his latest movie and he looks/sounds like a right annoying [foo foo] so I'm far from happy with this news. :( I just hope he's not the main villain as I cant see him carrying the entire film as a character like Norman Osborn.
ElBeaster
ElBeaster - 10/11/2010, 11:32 AM
"warmth and rage" is a perfect description for scorpion because he's conflicted: he's a good guy, but he hates Jameson. at least that's how he starts out. i think scorpion would be a perfect first villain because he would compliment parker's story of starting out at the daily bugle.

but that could define a lot of villians.

He's a good actor, my first guess was electro but who knows. He could pull off Green Goblin as well...

@dellamorte1872 I can see him as the lizard which i wouldn't mind but I do think lizard would be better if he was set-up as a second villain in the sequel.

First instinct is Electro. But he could also be a cool Mysterio.

I think Rhys echoes ultimate norman osborn. We have to keep in mind that they're essentially going for an adaption of the ultimate spiderman storyline.

His hair is a bit thiner then the coics, but the hair colour and facial appearences are uncanny if you ask me.

My problem with him being Electro (as some have mentioned) is that Electro and his story is tied to Justin Hammer, which would probably be a huge legal hurdle.

Plus this has ties to gwen stacy, and could introduce a pre-mecha armed doc ock. If you really think about it, goblin is probably the best villain to start with, even if it's been done by Raimi already. Hollywood has shown no holding back in redoing characters in such a short time frame.

Another thing of note is Webb's description of Spidey's villains in his comments above. He talks about the complex relationships the villains have to Peter. Now I'm really betting it's either Connors or Norman. It's gotta be one of those two. But I'm probably wrong :)

I've seen this guy in 4 or 5 things. While I really liked him in everything I've seen, he has one hell of an accent. If he could cover up the accent I could see him as Osbourne or Electro.

Being from wales myself i love this guy. Personally i think the best film of his career was TWIN TOWN. As well as being a funny actor he can also pull of the psycho role well. I would prefer him in the role of Carnage, but i dont think we are ever going to see Carnage in a live action Spidey movie, so i think he will probably play green goblin.
Dynamo
Dynamo - 10/11/2010, 11:48 AM

I could buy Electro as a Brit. As I could Lizard, Vulture and Mysterio. Hell even Shocker could be pulled off with a cockny accent.

Shocker would be a terrible main villain though. I've always wanted an opening bank robbery scene with him, but for that to be the extent of his role. Unless the main villain breaks him out of jail at the end and they team up. But alone, he would be lame

@Racer
Ya, somebody already pointed that out. They look so similar lol
