THE HUNGER GAMES Star Josh Hutcherson Reflects On Losing THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN Role To Andrew Garfield

Five Nights at Freddy's star Josh Hutcherson was among the actors considered to play Peter Parker in The Amazing Spider-Man and he's now reflected on losing the role to Andrew Garfield. Check it out...

When Sam Raimi's Spider-Man 4 failed to become a reality, Sony Pictures decided to reboot the franchise and enlisted Marc Webb to retell the wall-crawler's origin story in The Amazing Spider-Man. "The Untold Story" ultimately proved mighty familiar following reshoots but Andrew Garfield's stint as Peter Parker across two movies earned him a devoted fanbase.

Among the actors considered for the role was The Hunger Games star Josh Hutcherson. The actor, who recently found box office success with his lead role in Five Nights at Freddy's, was recently asked by Inverse whether he'd still like to star in a Marvel project...perhaps as a Spider-Man Variant.

"Potentially, yeah," Hutcherson told the site. "I was a big Spider-Man fan all my life growing up from the old-school cartoons and stuff. But yeah, I'd be open to it, man. I'd throw some webs around."

As for why he wasn't cast in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, the actor admits he was never told why Sony didn't want him to play the character.

"You never find out," he says. "They just end up hiring somebody else. So I never found out why. I also do know that three weeks or so after I auditioned, I ended up getting Hunger Games, so it kind of worked out."

It's hard at this stage to imagine anyone other than Garfield as Spidey in those movies and, while Hutcherson would have been an interesting choice, it's hard to say whether he'd be a good fit for Peter.

It all worked out for him, anyway, as he'd go on to land a lead role in The Hunger Games franchise as the heroic Peeta Mellark.

The Amazing Spider-Man starred Andrew Garfield as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Emma Stone as Gwen Stacy. The movie explored the web-slinger's origin story, spending more time focusing on his high school years and the discovery of his powers after he was bitten by a genetically modified spider created by his father.

The story revolves around Peter's quest to uncover the truth about the disappearance of his parents, leading him to Oscorp and an encounter with Dr. Curt Connors (Rhys Ifans), who later transforms into the villainous Lizard.

Both Garfield and Ifans reprised their respective roles in Spider-Man: No Way Home. The former is expected to return in a future project, most likely the Multiversal Avengers: Secret Wars

Do you think Hutcherson would have been a good Spider-Man?

Garfield was cool, and so is Holland (it's the writing that lets him down sometimes) but i can't help but wonder how Asa Butterfield would have worked out!

He's alot taller also and would have been easier to sell if we followed him into adulthood. Holland, i just can't imagine seeing as an adult.. which is strange cus isn't he in his mid 20's now?

@UniqNo - yeah Holland just has that baby face about him. That’s why when the cast him as Drake I thought he would be playing a flashback role.

@Arthorious - Yeah, babyface is right. I think the point with the uncharted was to start right from the beginning but i don't see it continuing.

@UniqNo - Was it ever confirmed or was there proof that Asa lost the role because he blabbed to somebody on social media?

@QuietStorm - I dunno if that was the reason, but it was down to him an Holland in the end.

@UniqNo - Yeah, I remember a rumor and couldve sworn there was a screensot but he was going back and forth with somebody on twitter or something and said "thats why Im spiderman" and the next day Holland got the part lol

@QuietStorm - Tom Holland has said in interviews that he only found out he got the role from looking at a Marvel post on Instagram.

I never really believed this, because usually actors are briefed by their agents who get word beforehand. But after remembering the Asa Butterfield ordeal, now I wonder if he really was fired one day and then Holland got the part at the very last minute the next. Which would explain him not knowing or at the very least being briefed at the last second before it was announced.

@Kurne - Yup!

@Kurne -

If that's the case with Butterfield, then that's a big time fumble. But off that 1 one interaction would Diseny or is it Sony really take that away from him?? Dam.

@UniqNo - It was a huge deal back then. Disney was just about the get the rights to put Spiderman to use in MCU films. Asa had just killed it in Ender's Game. It felt like back then, the scooper world was more of a threat and having things released early really sucked. But yeah, I think that was the last straw. Feige with the sniper was a real deal

He dodged a bullet.

@FinnishDude - Quality of movies aside, most people have fond memories of Garfield in the role, it didn't damage his career, quite the opposite

@FinnishDude - what Urubrodi said. I thought his depiction was solid and he clearly had the right passion and skill to play the role. It just had a bloated story in the 2nd movie. I actually prefer him to Holland’s Spidey.

If the OG trilogy never happened his two movies would be seen with less hate.

The ASM movies were so terrible. He dodged a bullet.

The dude does look a lot like Peter Parker as drawn by Ross Andru in the late 1970's
