Some say that they would like to see Spider-Man stay in his own universe, while other would like to see him exist in the MCU. My personal theory is that Spider-Man will exist in his own universe up until The Amazing Spider-Man 4 (which is to be released on May 4th, 2018). I believe that that film will be a Shattered dimensions type film and will feature Mysterio as the villain. In the end while the Spider-Men travel back to their Universes, The Amazing Spider-Man ends up in the MCU due to Mysterio. This can set up for the Avengers 3 where Thanos is the villain and it will deal with the Infinity Gauntlet. The Infinity Gauntlet will get Spider-Man back to his Universe. Well, like I said that’s my theory but here’s for all the people who believe that Spider-Man already exist in the MCU!

Recently a Sony Exec. has stated that they and Marvel Studios are “working closely with Marvel and Disney." Also it has been stated in the past that Oscorp Tower was to feature in The Avengers. One can always dream...

No. Just no. That sounds like Infinite Crisis. I'd rather they just reboot the character or pretend he was in the MCU all along.

I personally would not like to see some sort of hindsight bias where they retroactively say 'Hey, Spider-Man was in the MCU all along, even though he was never referenced and he never referenced anything else in the MCU'

To me, that would be stupid.

BUT a one time plot-device that would allow him to come in for a single Avengers film, and then go back to his own 'universe' at the end...well, that would allow them to have their cake and eat it to. He's not part of the MCU, but they would have a way of still getting him in a movie that doesn't screw up any existing continuity.

I personally would prefer that Marvel Studios and Disney just wait to hopefully get the rights to the character back, and then use him in the MCU.

Hell...by the time THAT happens, the MCU will probably be ready for a reboot ANYWAYS...so they would be able to start a new MCU that has the heavy hitters like Spider-Man in it from the start.

Let's face it, Toby's Spidey would fit the Marvel Universe much better than Webb's

This will never happen. As much as I'd love for it to I've accepted that Sony will milk this character for all it's worth, it won't go back to the MCU until Spider-Man 10 crashes and burns. Then in about 5-7 years once the rights have gone back to Marvel Studios will you than see Spider-Man apart of the MCU.

Though I'll admit a Shattered Dimensions story is the only way I could see Sony branching off other characters for spin-off films, and creating a Spider-Man universe which they're desperately trying to do.

Maybe he's already part of the MCU but that's the big reveal that Sony's wants to keep under wraps? It can happen. Marvel/Disney and Sony gets along pretty well its just Fox that Marvel hates.

I honestly hate the idea of spiderman existing in another universe from the avengers. Like either have spidey with his own universe or be apart of the avengers this whole time but kept on lockdown. I'm telling you spiderman traveling to the avengers universe would feel out of place and make spiderman feel like he doesn't belong.

Not going to happen. There will be conflict of interest between Sony and Disney.

As much as we all want it to, I think it's safe to say that as long as Sony owns Spider-Man, he'll never be in an Avengers film. And the thing about that is, Sony is never going to lose the rights to Spider-Man. They have up to 4 movies planned, in addition to spin-offs. Chances are, Sony's spider universe will be going well at to the mid 2020s at maximum. And even when that franchise ends, I wouldn't even put it past Sony to reboot Spider-Man again after that. They will do whatever they can to hold on to the rights. I can't imagine a scenario where Sony would let Marvel have the rights back, but even if that were to happen it wouldn't be till the 2020s as I said earlier. Phase 3 of Marvel is likely to end in 2018, so I honestly don't know how long Marvel plans to keep the MCU going. Mark my words though, if Spider-Man ever appears in an Avengers film, it won't be among the current lineup. It will be a decade or two down the line at most.

The MCU is being built for the long haul. There won't be a reboot any time soon. They will replace actors and introduce nee characters but there wont be reboot, phase 1,2,3, reboot another phase 1,2,3. This is marvels business plan. The same way comics run, the mcu now runs.

I think someone else has suggested it. But, I think if they can't merge with the MCU then merge with the previous films.

Imagine Toby and Andrew onscreen together, maybe the two Mary Janes. Crossovers of universes happen in the comics all the time, and with Sony only having Spiderman why not do it as there shared universe.
