BOX OFFICE: SAUSAGE PARTY Outperforms Projections, SUICIDE SQUAD Heads Toward A Major Drop

After a solid week, things were looking up for Suicide Squad heading into the weekend, but with the Friday numbers now in, it looks like the film is heading for a Batman v Superman-sized drop.

The Sausages are coming, the Sausages are coming!

Sony Pictures' critically acclaimed R-rated animated comedy Sausage Party, which comes to us from the minds of Seth Rogen & Evan Goldberg, is exceeding all sorts of expectations and, after an amazing $13.5 million debut on Friday, is now on pace for an outstanding $32-34 million opening weekend. Definitely not bad for a film that reportedly only cost around $19 million to make.

However, good news for one film can often mean bad news for another. In this case, it's Warner Bros.' critically maligned Suicide Squad, which after collecting $13.35 yesterday, has adjusted its second weekend projections to a more conservative $44-45 million. That should be more than good enough to secure the #1 box office spot for the second week in a row, but it's unfortunately a steep 79% drop on its second Friday, more or less on par with the 81% drop Zack Snyder's Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice suffered on its second Friday back in April. Overall, for the weekend, it should see a 66-69% drop if it doesn't show any improvement.

The film is still performing relatively well for such an obscure property and should cross the $200 million mark domestic and $400 million mark worldwide by the end of the weekend, if not sooner, but with rampant reports of the production budget being considerably higher than the studio reported $175 million, possibly in the $250 million range, it'll still be quite some time before WB can determine whether this can be considered a box office success or another misstep.

Forbes' box office report offered some additional insight and theorized that this "for the fans only" mentality and narrative pushed by diehard fanatics may be hurting DC Films more than helping. The lack of legs for both Suicide Squad & Batman v Superman seemingly back up the claim with the openings setting all kinds of new box office milestones in their respective months as fans comes out in droves, but the second and subsequent weekends dropping at alarming rates before petering out entirely with the general public not showing the same level of enthusiasm.

Then instead of 66 million opening it could have ranked in only 33.
