Per ScreenRant, that statement from Ayer (Note: that tweet won't load properly if you have Adblocker installed) can apparently be attributed to a famous Mexican revolutionary named Emiliana Zappata, which translates “
I’d prefer to die standing, than to live on my knees.” Certainly, a superhero film doesn't have the same context as a social revolution but Ayer's meaning is quite clear. He set out to try something unique and even if he failed, he wouldn't go back and play things safe.
Prior to the review embargo lifting earlier today, Ayer
had this to say to Comicbook.com about potentially returning for a sequel. “
Look, anything’s possible. Right now I have to see if the movie connects with the fans. Who knows? You never know. I made it for the fans, and am a fan myself. But before I put my head back on the chopping block, there are some questions to settle.”

U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?
