Jay Hernandez Wants To Return As El Diablo In A SUICIDE SQUAD Sequel

While he was labelled as a villain throughout the marketing campaign, El Diablo went out like a hero in David Ayer's Suicide Squad. After using his abilities to transform into some sort of fire god, Diablo went toe to toe with Incubus, before being blasted into smithereens by Rick Flag's bomb.

According to actor Jay Hernandez, he was unaware his character was set to die, as the change appears to have been added later on. “It was interesting, because there were some changes that happened later on,”  Hernandez revealed to Comicbook.com, “I didn’t know that’s how the end was going to happen, early on. For me, it was important to make it good, make it impressive, and go out in a blaze of glory. Ultimately, I think it worked to give it some meaning, some emotional weight to the end of the story.”

Diablo's fate seemed pretty certain at the fim's conclusion, but Hernandez has hinted that we may not have seen the last of Chato Santana. "Of course there is [a chance he could return]! I’m not saying anything, just that it’s a possibility,” he said.

Diablo's role in the film seemed to be the sympathetic moral center of the group, with the character having been revealed to have accidentally killed his family with his abilities. Hernandez said that he put his all into this particular scene in order to drive home the emotional message of the film. “It was the scene I was most focused on. I wanted to make sure, because a lot of the story hinges on that moment,” he said. “It’s the moment the Squad is sort of galvanized. Before that, it’s a bunch of just random people and everybody has their own goal and direction, they hate each other, some are plotting to kill each other. After that, they sit down and they realize this is it, this is their shot or not, and they decide to do the honorable thing. I think part of why that happens is the opening up of Diablo, who has been closed off for the whole movie up to that point. It was a pivotal moment, and a really important scene for me.”

@SuperCat - Hell yea bro, couldn't agree more. Definitely my favorite performance and probably my favorite character in the movie. Hernandez really brought it in that scene, and I wholeheartedly agree with what he said above. Diablo brought the team together.

Great performance.

ELDiablo >>>> Everyone Else in SS
My favorite character in the movie.
He was the unexpected character I ended up liking and I thought Hernandez did a great job in his performance.

@slickrickdesigns - I agree, although we didn't get as much from him, El Diablo was good and Captain Boomerang too!
The rest were okay. Deadshot had some good scenes but overall was Will Smith being Will Smith and not Floyd Lawton.
Harley Quinn was average. She looked the part but didn't always sound the part. Whenever she said 'Puddin' it kinda made me cringe. It didn't sound right.

It was a pity that Diablo's story felt as rushed as it did. Hernandez gave a great performance, but the whole "family" angle was poorly executed, and the whole "fire god" thing came out of f*cking nowhere.

@MattBellissimo - Thats kind of what I liked about it. I didn't expect that and I didn't know much about the character from comics so when he transformed I was like WOW!
Yes, while back story felt a little rushed it also gave enough to make me feel sympathy for his character. It was the unearned love for the SS/family that felt weird. But still his performance stood out to me. Deadshot and Quinn too but they got so much more screen time.

@slickrickdesigns - Yeah, that sorta sums it up for me too. The character's earnestness, restraint, and pain felt real, at least to me.

I didn't enjoy the stereotypical Latino attitude along with the black-isms they gave to Croc. Head shakes galore there, for Croc especially.

@MattBellissimo - LOL... I thought it was ok. Croc's attitude grew on me and I like how he felt like the tough guy of the group, but while he was ok he didn't seem like Killer Croc. Would've been cool if him and Boomerang were secretly taking out some of the mercenaries on the mission to plan for escape.

this! and the fact he asked for B.E.T as his luxury item at the end (i know it was for comedic value but he watching music videos of girls shaking their ass)...... as a black man that scene kinda had me like -_-

I felt like Hernandez was the only one in this movie that seemed to really fit it. Croc and Smith were so low energy and bland. Robbie was trying so damn hard to be perfect (and ended up occasionally missing the mark of being good). Courtney somehow became the character I enjoyed the most ([frick]ing figure that out). And everyone else was maximally generic.

But Hernandez actually seemed to fit the mid-budget schlock this movie was trying to be / too expensive to be.

Let me amend that. Smith was "Will Smith bland" which is usually about as good as most actors on a good day or "peak Jai Courtney".

But Courtney really surprised me. Totally watchable and engaging.

@Spock0Clock - Courtney gave me the most laughs, thats for damn sure. Wish he had more.

@Spock0Clock - in a better written and directed movie, all of the characters would work pretty great.

@Ryguy88 - Well, sure. By that measure. (Maybe not Katana. She was really only there for her nominative accessory.)
