SUPERGIRL: Arrowverse Girl Of Steel Melissa Benoist On Milly Alcock Being Cast As The WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Melissa Benoist, who played Kara Zor-El in The CW's Supergirl series, has weighed in on Milly Alcock playing the same character on the big screen in the DCU...

Milly Alcock (House of The Dragon) recently landed the role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DCU, and is expected to make her debut in Superman (FKA Superman: Legacy) before leading her own Woman of Tomorrow movie down the line.

Alcock takes over the role from Sasha Calle, who made just one appearance as the character in The Flash, and the Girl of Steel was previously played in live action by Helen Slater in 1984's Supergirl: The Movie, and Laura Vandervoort on Smallville.

But by far the longest tenured (and no doubt most popular among Arrowverse fans) actress to suit-up as the DC Comics hero is Melissa Benoist, who played Kara Zor-El in The CW's Supergirl series from 2015 to 2021.

During an interview with Screen Rant, Benoist was asked for her thoughts on Alcock taking over as Supergirl on the big screen, and while she didn't actually mention the actress specifically, she did say she believes that multiple takes on the character are "valuable."

"I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the '50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it."

Actress and playwright Ana Nogueira is currently working on the Woman of Tomorrow script, but the project does not have a director attached (as far as we know). We should find out who'll be helming the movie in "the coming weeks."

Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl reboot during their studio press day in January of last year, when the "Gods and Monsters" DCU slate was revealed. The project will be at least partially based on King’s acclaimed comic book series of the same name from 2022.

Said Gunn at the time, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”

Very well said!!.

I wasn’t a huge fan of the show overall (except Season 4 which was one of the best in the Arrowverse) but it had elements I enjoyed , none more consistently then Melissa’s performance as Kara/Supergirl.

I know her version gets some criticism for being a female version of Clark & Superman but i still thought it was well done and Melissa played it with the utmost sincerity & earnestness!!.

@KelvTwelve - it’s so good

Sam Witwer as Agent Liberty is an underrated villain!!.

Using aliens as political commentary for immigrants or refugees was well done.

@TheVisionary25 - she was amazing as the girl of steel. It was very nice what she said and of course her and Sasha Calle complemented each other as well when she was cast as Supergirl.

I didn't watch the show but Melissa looked visually perfect as Supergirl. One of my favourite small screen costumes.

It'll be interesting to see how well a Supergirl movie does. Will it earn the same disdain as Capt Marvel does, from that same crowd? Will it struggle to draw numbers amid decline in super-properties? Will it try for the same tone as Superman or try to differentiate itself? Lots of intrigue with this one.

@TheManWithoutFear - all excellent questions raised. Superhero fatigue in movies, I think, really depends on the complexities of the story writing. Look at The Batman, Joker etc. Those movies had excellent storytelling. I think it's because, when you strip them back, they're not stories about superheros. Joker is a social commentary story, The Batman is a murder mystery which just so happens to have a man dressed up as a bat. The writing has to be top notch and compelling. We'll have to wait and see 🙈

@WATCHT0WER - while I disagree with your assessment of Joker since I didn’t particularly care much for it , I do agree with the rest

I also feel it has to feel unique & fresh and not cookie cutter because that won’t sell anymore

@TheVisionary25 - exactly. Totally agree. Unique and different from anything seen before. Highlighting that this isn't just a female version of a superman story but fleshing it out as a fully developed character within a original setting and POV. Ha, don't worry about it- Joker is one of those movies you either loved or loathed.
