SUPERGIRL: Arrowverse Girl Of Steel Melissa Benoist On Milly Alcock Being Cast As The WOMAN OF TOMORROW

Melissa Benoist, who played Kara Zor-El in The CW's Supergirl series, has weighed in on Milly Alcock playing the same character on the big screen in the DCU...

Milly Alcock (House of The Dragon) recently landed the role of Supergirl in James Gunn and Peter Safran's revamped DCU, and is expected to make her debut in Superman (FKA Superman: Legacy) before leading her own Woman of Tomorrow movie down the line.

Alcock takes over the role from Sasha Calle, who made just one appearance as the character in The Flash, and the Girl of Steel was previously played in live action by Helen Slater in 1984's Supergirl: The Movie, and Laura Vandervoort on Smallville.

But by far the longest tenured (and no doubt most popular among Arrowverse fans) actress to suit-up as the DC Comics hero is Melissa Benoist, who played Kara Zor-El in The CW's Supergirl series from 2015 to 2021.

During an interview with Screen Rant, Benoist was asked for her thoughts on Alcock taking over as Supergirl on the big screen, and while she didn't actually mention the actress specifically, she did say she believes that multiple takes on the character are "valuable."

"I think any and all takes on the character are valuable because of what she stands for. Supergirl as an entity is iconic for a reason and has been since the '50s. I personally think that every iteration of her is valuable for young women to see, and hopefully [with] every take on her, someone will see themselves in it."

Actress and playwright Ana Nogueira is currently working on the Woman of Tomorrow script, but the project does not have a director attached (as far as we know). We should find out who'll be helming the movie in "the coming weeks."

Gunn and Peter Safran announced the Supergirl reboot during their studio press day in January of last year, when the "Gods and Monsters" DCU slate was revealed. The project will be at least partially based on King’s acclaimed comic book series of the same name from 2022.

Said Gunn at the time, “In our series we see the difference between Superman who was sent to Earth and raised by loving parents from the time he was an infant, versus Supergirl who was raised on a rock, a chip off Krypton, and watched everyone around her die and be killed in terrible ways for the first 14 years of her life, and then came to Earth when she was a young girl. She’s much more hardcore, she’s not exactly the Supergirl we’re used to seeing.”
