ALL-STAR SUPERMAN Writer Grant Morrison Reveals Issues With James Gunn's Reboot And Jor-El Twist

All-Star Superman writer Grant Morrison has revealed some of his issues with James Gunn's Superman movie, including the Jor-El twist and the Man of Tomorrow's "fragility" at times.

James Gunn's Superman was released last July to positive reviews and ultimately grossed over $615 million worldwide (making it 2025's highest-grossing superhero movie).

The filmmaker and DC Studios co-CEO wore his inspirations on his sleeve, with Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman among them. The prolific writer has penned many different takes on the Man of Steel, including in the pages of Action Comics and Superman and The Authority.

Morrison gave Superman his seal of approval last year, and in a recent interview with Half the Picture, maintained that it was the "best Superman movie yet." However, he also laid out some of his issues with Gunn's take on the character.

"It became the closest to capturing what Superman feels like. I had a few things I didn't like about it," Morrison said. "[James] made specific choices that I think were made for dramatic reasons that were understandable...in order to make him seem more relatable, he had him getting beaten up an awful lot. I want to see him stop getting beaten up and fight back."

This version of Superman did take a beating and appeared far less powerful than other interpretations of the character. Much of that was down to Gunn hoping to make him more relatable and less God-like.

A bigger issue for many fans was the revelation that Jor-El and Lara sent their son to Earth with the hope that he'd conquer the planet and form a harem. Like many comic book fans, Morrison wasn't a fan of the change but admitted that it "worked" within the context of the story Gunn was telling.

"I didn't like it because I prefer wit hen Krypton's this lost utopia," he shared. "I like the idea that there was something amazing, and nature just wiped it out. Their own lack of attention to detail allowed them to be wiped out. I think there's something much more poignant about that."

"The thing I found almost upsetting in it was that it felt like Superman's morality was quite fragile. It was just based on this wish-fulfilment bullshit," Morrison said of how Kal-El interpreted the message left by his parents before the truth was revealed.

While the writer admitted to being worried by Clark Kent's "fragility" in some scenes, he was happy to see Superman showing his "strength" during his speech to Lex Luthor after the final battle. "They put him in a position where I was concerned that he would break down, lose his compass," Morrison noted. "The fact that he didn't was just nice to see."

With his DCU introduction out of the way, Superman can come into his own in next summer's Man of Tomorrow movie. However, he'll be sharing the spotlight with Lex Luthor, a villain Gunn has said he intends to portray in a heroic light for this team-up.

Written and directed by James Gunn, Man of Tomorrow stars David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Isabela Merced as Kendra Saunders/Hawkgirl, and Frank Grillo as Rick Flag, Sr. We recently learned that Lars Eidinger will play the movie's big bad, Brainiac.

Several actors and characters are rumoured to appear, including Aaron Pierre's John Stewart/Green Lantern and John Cena's Peacemaker.

Man of Tomorrow arrives in theaters on July 9, 2027.

Best yet? Maybe I'm in the minority in believing that is the Donner cut of SII.....

@ProfessorWhy - If Donner had been able to finish his cut in 1979, I think it would have been slightly better than the 1st movie. For all its faults, the Lester Cut feels like a complete film. That said, I don't care for the idea that Superman is in the Fortress with Lois while the Kryptonians are running amok & he doesn't know Lois long enough to make such a huge decision to give up his powers for love IMO. And... I actually agree with Morrison. The new one is flawed, sure. But I get a kick out of it every time.

@TDKRnry88 - I'm with you in the Lester Cut. It's my favorite of any of the Superman films. Terrance Stamp was epic and Ursa scared the sh1t out of me as a kid.

@ProfessorWhy - I think most would agree that the idea of the Donner cut Could have been the best. But his original vision would have cut the whole ending of the first movie. The version of the S2 Donner Cut that we got to see, was a bit choppy and the end repetitive of the first. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, and love that we got to see it, I just think we all know... Quest for Peace is the best superman movie by a mile! LOL!

The first two are the still the best. The extended version of Superman: The Movie is the GOAT.

@Mongrol - I'm thinking that part from Clark's real parents may have been a bit of kink/wish-fulfillment on behalf of the creepy director himself. 🤨

“Strength”.

When he finally caught the man that blew an innocent man’s p brains out in front of him, he gave him a whiney lecture. That’s all

Some strength. Supes was such a pansy in this movie.

LoudLon

@JobinJ - I don't see how he was a pansy. Yes, he got beat up at times, but that's happened in the comics many times, as well as in other movies. He got beat up in Superman 2. He was beaten up by Batman and literally killed by Doomsday in Batman v Superman.

Still, in Gunn's movie, he ultimately comes back and stomps Ultraman, The Engineer, and Luthor's army.

And what should he have done to Luthor as punishment? Laser him in half like Homelander? That would be antithetical to Superman's character.

If folks didn't like the movie, that's one thing. But on a character level, he's still the most powerful metahuman in the movie. But where's the drama and heroism when the hero is unbeatable and has no obstacles to overcome?

@JobinJ - be boring Superman movie if we see Superman win every fight in movie that what happens in cartoons , be weak by kryptonite trick
TDKRnry88
TDKRnry88 - 2/8/2026, 8:51 AM
@JobinJ - It's called "inner strength", restraint to hold to his morals & not just kill or maim Luthor despite knowing he easily could. He had more control over his anger than most of us in that moment. Jeez, you just want him to be this unbeatable, rigid guy with NO flaws 🙄

Tell that to Zod's snapped neck.

RolandD
RolandD - 2/8/2026, 10:22 AM
@Feralwookiee - Snapping Zod’s neck absolutely was “antithetical to Superman’s character.” Your comment would have made more sense to me if Superman had done that in Gunn’s movie.
Bucky74
Bucky74 - 2/8/2026, 10:25 AM
@SummersEssex - He came across as a whiney man-baby who needed to be “soothed” by his parents in his early 30s. It was ridiculous and Corenswet was against it (at least according to that behind the scenes footage) but Gunn shut him down.
Feralwookiee
Feralwookiee - 2/8/2026, 10:49 AM
@RolandD - The point is, it ISN'T antithetical to Superman's character. As established in many comics and in MOS, he is willing to commit murder when needed.

JobinJ
JobinJ - 2/8/2026, 5:21 PM
@J0RELLC00LJ - tell me about it. So [frick]ing stupid. No consequences in this cinematic universe. I would drop dead then team up with him if I was given the choice.

Lazy writing. To be honest, I felt the same way about Loki in the Marvel universe. He killed people in New York City with his invasion, killed agent Colson, killed other people, but yet we were forced to watch him team up with a good guys time after time.

Now they’re going to bring Scarlett witch back. She murdered tons of people as well.
TheRevelation
TheRevelation - 2/8/2026, 6:02 PM
@Feralwookiee - Yeah, I always just thought that was a given. His response after killing Zod tells you everything. He saw no other way. The stuff with Snyder that showed the behind the scenes stuff probably blew it out of proportion a bit. But yeah, those saying MOS Supes wouldn't have taken this beating forget he took that beating in every film not named ZSJL in the DCEU. I'm not sure what people want from these characters anymore at times.
RolandD
RolandD - 2/8/2026, 8:54 PM
@Feralwookiee - Nope. Not buying it. Superman should not kill and using MOS as an example is like defining running by saying it is when you run.

@LoudLon -
People complain about Superman being boring but then when he’s written in an interesting and compelling way then they complain “this isn’t Superman!”

You can never win with these people.

The movie was obviously inspired by the animated series from the 90s in which Superman gets beaten up in almost EVERY fight.
JayBird
JayBird - 2/9/2026, 7:26 AM
@Feralwookiee - MoS didn't estabilish shit as for the comics, Supes killed Zod and his goons when he was in the Phantom Zone, later then Joker killed Jason Todd and Batman was going to end it once and for all. Supes got in the way and said he wouldn't let Batman do it, there is a mini-series called The Two Faces of Justice if i'm not wrong, it shows yearly encounters of Bruce and Clark and how they turned into friends and learned to work rogether since in the first time they had to work together the guy that was being held hostage was blinded and runned into the street and got run by a truck, so they made a vow to meet at that same day every year to catch up, one of those editions is after Jason was killed and Bruce at that time was destroyed, Clark showed up and talked to Bruce about that time in the Phantom Zone where he had killed Zod, Bruce asked if that was after or before he stopped him from killing the Joker, it was before and Bruce got mad at him and started calling him a hypocrite then Clark conviced Bruce to travel with him to Smallville and show to Batman how he grew up and where does his beliefs comes from.

Superman doesn't like to kill and he only does when there is no other way like in Doomsday case, and if you actually remember something from the movie, Lex was disarmed at the end of it so Clark shouldn't feel threathened by him to kill him at the end.
