“It’s the most controversial thing in the movie,” legendary Warner Bros. animator Bruce Timm said when a fan asked what he thought of the controversial ending to 'Man of Steel' at the New York Comic-Con. He says that when he first saw the script he knew that it would be controversial, but he didn't know how much outcry there would be. “I don’t really have a problem with it. I actually thought it worked.” He added, “I understand that Superman has to have that no killing policy, even though I think it’s outdated.” The amount of destruction during the climax is definitely the most controversial/debated topic surrounding the movie. Many fans were torn. Some fans are okay with the amount of destruction, while it bothered others. “It didn't bug me either,” longtime Superman group editor Mike Carlin told the fan. “We actually did something similar in the comic books. My only problem with it is that if Superman was going to kill General Zod, why he didn’t do it sooner before a couple city blocks were destroyed.” The story in the comics he is referring to is Exile in Space. In the story-arc, the murder of Zod was followed by a long tale about the consequences–what killing someone meant for Superman, what it did to him, and how people reacted to a Superman who was willing to kill. “I’m still trying to figure out what those people were still doing in the train station with the whole city being destroyed,” joked DC Co-Publisher Dan DiDio. Later Bruce Timm said, “It seemed like a really, fresh modern interpretation of Superman. That was my big takeaway from the movie.” What do you think of their comments, and what are your own thoughts on the amount of destruction in Man of Steel? Sound of below!

" if Superman was going to kill General Zod, why he didn’t do it sooner before a couple city blocks were destroyed..."

Exactly what I think.

Loved the movie nonetheless.

I really liked MOS and it's the first time I've ever enjoyed the character of Superman.

So Bruce Timm read the script before the movie...interesting.

You just love bashing Goyer, don't you? Need I remind you that Goyer wrote the script for Batman Begins which to this day has the best quotable lines from the trilogy

"It's not who I am underneath but what do that defines me."
"I wont kill you, but I don't have to save you."

and many more that I don't care to type out. Also please don't say that it was Nolan's brother, because he didn't come around until TDK

I dont get how people are still questioning the amount of destruction caused to Metroplois during Supes and Zods fight...I mean its two superpowered aliens basically having a fight to the death, do u really expect to just have a tree get knocked over or a car bumped into?

The amount of destruction just reminded me of how its been interpreted before in Superman:TAS and the JL cartoons. I guess when people see it involving actual structures crumbling and many many people deaths involved it troubled them...Not me, I loved every second of it, cuz thats how a Superman vs villain fight should look IMO :]

That quote made me laugh lol xD I enjoyed the movie for what it was, could have been better though.

Was Man of Steel perfect? No. Was it good? Yes. Was it entertaining? Yes. It was controversial and it changed the game but it set up a potential DC cinematic universe well and was a better reboot than some of the more recent ones these days *cough* The Amazing Spider-Man *cough*...

Why is it when its with Superman...the idea of "no killing" is outdated, but when it comes to Batman it is concrete.

No controversy here. Everything here is explainable, with a little logic and a little imagination. The issues with the movie come from poorly thought out flashbacks, little character development, shoehorning Lois Lane into every major action sequence, spending too much time on Jor-El and Zod, lack of coherent themes, butchering Pa Kent, etc etc. Movie could've been so much better, but we have to settle for a mediocre, action-packed summer blockbuster. So, pretty much Iron Man 3.

I honestly think the only reason why he didnt kill him earlier is he wanted to just kick his ass and wear him down. You can really tell he didnt want to kill him, he just wanted to stop him and his reaction to his actions said everything.

That whole scene was executed horribly imo
StatenMan18
StatenMan18 - 10/12/2013, 2:37 PM
I mean I didn't like the kill at the end, but this movies problem in my opinion was that it just wasn't executed properly..

Dialogue was wack, story so so, no heart no steady emotion though out the movie.. Like you'll get a good scene and then the tone of the next one just kills the tension.. Just my opinion tho

TheWolverine08 - 10/12/2013, 2:38 PM
Zod did have Character induced stupidity there when he just avoided looking directly at that family and killing them... and why were they huddling themselves up there?

" if Superman was going to kill General Zod, why he didn’t do it sooner before a couple city blocks were destroyed..."

Because if he didn't do it as a last resort, then he WOULD be the stone cold killer that many MOS critics claim he was. Simple as that.

Fresh and modern = killing ok.
NitPicker
NitPicker - 10/12/2013, 2:40 PM
@DioFoRio

I think the story would have been better if they had built Superman up to be the guy who can solve all his problems without killing. When he finally meets an opponent that he has to kill, it would have more of an impact.

And they kinda ruined what could have been a good scene in a Justice League movie. I imagined a scene where Batman wants to do some kind of brutal interrogation and Superman steps in and says "I can't let you do that". But now that Superman already killed someone, he can't have the holier than thou attitude that would be nice to see in a Justice League movie.
McNyagano
McNyagano - 10/12/2013, 2:42 PM
@Charlie2094

The reason Superman didn't kill Zod sooner was because he didn't want to kill him and was continuing to try and talk him out of it.

No he wasn't, he was punching Zod through the sky and ramming him against windows on skyscrappers. It wasn't until Zod was willing to kill that family in the train station. Which scene did Supes try to talk Zod?
Prime
Prime - 10/12/2013, 2:47 PM
Superman just wanted to stop Zod. He couldn't, so he has to kill him to stop....it's that easy.
Moohika
Moohika - 10/12/2013, 2:47 PM
Why was him killing Zod so controversial again?
Did he and Lois not send Zod and his crew to their deaths in Superman 2?
