Editorial: Why Man of Steel Could Be The Next Failure in Comic Book Movies

I am here to discuss why the film Man of Steel may not have a chance of succeeding in my own opinion. Read on...

Hello Everyone,

Before I start I would like to say these are my own opinions on the film so far, I am not a troll nor a lunatic. I am just an ordinary person dishing out what I have to say in my own words through this editorial. So please if you have any hate words just save it until after you finish reading what I have to say or I won't consider reading your comment. All in good manners.

Now to begin, I am extremely distraught over the progress being made with Man of Steel. After all the things I have been hearing, what are they doing? Does Zack Snyder have any clue about this character at all? In terms it may be a good film but for me in comic book film terms it's just going to be the worst adaption yet to come. With Superman Returns that tried to take the approach directly back to the first film this one is trying to be "original and unique" in their own words. It's going with this whole surreal sense if we open our window we would probably see Superman flying by. It's going with the whole gritty Nolan feel. Why don't you also answer the question on how come the first Superman film was so successful without the whole gritty Nolan feel. It's because it's the original and sometimes taking inspiration from the original can often be considered as an important lesson. Not Superman Returns which failed to find the right balance but this film had the opportunity to directly take the original plot points of their own. Instead we are getting a rehashed origins story and starting all over again.

You know for over a decade you wouldn't think nobody would have known who Superman was. Why couldn't they have started the story from the middle, there is no need to establish Superman if he has already been in over three films. His character is so simple you can start from any timeline and there wouldn't be any trouble at all getting back into it. This is one of the many problems I specifically have with this film, it's starting all over again. We know he is from Krypton and all the other things have been repeated over it's just getting annoying. Speaking of this, it's not my only gripe I have with this film.

No Kryptonite featured at all. People are saying oh look he has a bunch of other problems to deal with this and that. He is not a complex character, this is not some character that needs to divided into sections. Not including his main weakness in the film or not even making an establishment of it is just blasphemy. You can have a film without Lex Luthor but not his main weakness that has been established in over hundreds of comics, every single movie, and neatly every single form of media we know Superman in. You might as well just call him Human Man to confuse the general audiences that know Superman well even more. Everybody knows Kryptonite is his weakness, the whole average general popular majority of people that know who Superman is. It will cause confusion. Don't confuse the general audience.

Next making Superman closer to reality, he is an alien. Enough said with that. You do not ground science fiction. Science fiction will remain how it is and there is no real possible way ever to make it reality. Like I said the first film didn't need to utilize this crap to be successful so why here. Next they are just throwing in a bunch of action sequences to make us forget about that, oh good real exciting. You know I'm just wondering if they oxygen levels on Krypton are the same as Earth.

Speaking of Krypton, the alien people are engineered? What are they trying to rip off now Prometheus? Despite how unoriginal the film was at least it made a ground towards audiences. It just feels like a science fiction element which has been used since the dawn of time. They might as well add Zombie Kryptonians while they are at it cause I don't know what else will save it from turning into another parody of the genre like Superman Returns was.

Speaking of a topic about recycling the same old, how about General Zod? I know he hasn't been seen in a while but are you really going back to his character. Superman has a full roster of villains and out of all of them they recycle him. What about Doomsday as a villain. Doomsday needs little introduction or back story just throw him in the movie and you saved the movie from minutes not needed. General Zod would have been more suited for a final film, otherwise I believe his character is just going to be rushed in to cash on the story. Speaking of General Zod, why the hell does he look so constipated in this photo like he wants to take a crap all over this movie.

I am not a fan of any of the casting choices at all. It just feels so generic beyond anything. It's like they were making another action movie and just decided to throw in Superman as a last minute choice. What I wanted to see more was a heavily inspired cast not a cast that looks like it just walked off the set of a 80s flick. Everyone just looks so out of the times. It's not even modern anymore it's like a bad combination of retro and new. Decide which era you want to stay in and stay in the era!

Next on my list of gripes with casting choices, Henry Cavill looks nothing like Superman or Clark Kent. He is supposed to be a really awkward character while at the same time serious. This new portrayal looks like some hobo off the street judging from a photo of him in a beard.

We have a poor mans Superman on a quest to find his deeply emotional spirit. Oh I forgot we are supposed to take that seriously. You might as well just make him like emo Peter Parker in Spider-Man 3 I am sure you could get a good benefit of a lot of crying moments! Better yet it would make the story even sadder. Yeah connect to the audiences that want to see a superhero feel more human yeah great idea. It's uneatable in terms to digest all this in one sitting. Throw me a trash can please.

Did I also mention the fact they are using Hans Zimmer once again? Really WB going this far or was it just Nolan's choice. The same guy who scored The Dark Knight Trilogy is scoring Man of Steel. Yeah it's not like they are borrowing enough already. Not like there is hundreds of other great composers out there that can give this a distinct feel. What about giving this to a group of talented musicians. Like how Daft Punk scored Tron Legacy I am sure another talented musician could have taken the reigns of this movie. You know what I hate to borrow from previous words but I am just going to say it again, Skrillex would have been a better choice to score Man of Steel. Skrillex has been getting better in music. Take this for example.

At least it would have been original unlike this. WB reusing old composers is not going to work. If they are going to keep doing that they might as well lock Zimmer in a closet until Justice League needs to be scored. Yeah in the next thousand years like that is ever going to happen. It just gets tiring to hear the same music from another film over and over again.

Did I even mention the marketing for this movie is horrible. They might kick it up in the final months, next month literally. Which is still not a lot of time. They should have started full on at the beginning of the year, this is just a sign they are slowing down painfully. Even Superman Returns had better marketing than this crap. WB dished out more marketing on Green Lantern alone. If they have some idea they are going to make billions on this crap why not dig out the marketing. Yeah and the so called TV spot doesn't count. Recycling footage from the first trailer what a shame. You know you could have footage from the movie without spoiling it. Isn't there supposed to be hundreds of fights in the movie. Wait General Zod fights Superman? Really I don't see any spoilers at all so where the hell is the footage. It's not like Superman is going to die in the movie. We already know he beats the bad guys and saves the world crap oh sorry spoiler for people that haven't already figured out the generically entertaining formula.

Like I have said I don't see how this film will work at all. I will further more reserve anymore judgmental views I have till I see the actual movie. For now I am not sitting on the good fence for Man of Steel. Thank you for reading, please comment on your opinions.

I pretty much agree with everything said here, it feels like they're trying to take the Superman we know and love and make it something he's not. I'm not sure how I feel about the casting either, particularly the title character. But, alas, I hate Skrillex.
I'm gonna wait til I see the movie to judge, but my hopes aren't high, I'll tell you that.

I read some of your comments on a recent Man of Steel article before reading this, and well, I've got to say I think you're completely wrong for a number of reasons. The fact that Christopher Nolan is producing will alone get millions of people in the theater to see it. Not only that, but Zack Snyder's phenomenal work on Watchmen and 300 (especially in the fight scenes) will gain many more audience members. The cast list is also very good, with some very famous and well-known stars taking some of these iconic roles. And the mere fact that it's a Superman film will attract countless others, including kids, teenagers, adults, and comic book fans. So, even if you might not like the movie when it comes out, it'll never be a "failure". I'm very certain it'll obtain quite a large number of profits regardless of whether it has Kryptonite in it or not.

Also, Skrillex doing a movie soundtrack? HAH! Zimmer has done some great tracks before, and I'm certain he won't fail us this time.

Watch the movie before you go making conplaints about it. You obviously have not read the modern age superman comics and superman birthrights where Clark went on a journey around the world to find himself and his purpose for the use of his powers.

Why would people be confused about kryptonite not being present when there is -no- logical basis for it's inclusion? Golden Age and Modern Age Superman, by the way, can be hurt by things other than kryptonite, that was only the Silver Age Superman, who could tow a line of planets on a chain.

Also, it's very narrow minded to suggest Superman isn't a complex character. Any character can have depth, all it takes is proper treatment of said character. See Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely's All-Star Superman if you want an example of Superman as a complex character.

I see you don't welcome fresh takes on iconic characters. Plus, you're reasoning is terrible. You're taking screenshots and acting like that's going to be their look or facial expression the entire time. Henry Cavill looks like a hobo? Well he's a damn good-looking one, who btw, looks exactly like supes. The no-kryptonite thing makes perfect sense being that the villain is also from krypton. And kryptonite has been used in almost every superman movie to date, at this point it'd be lazy writing and tedious to include it as the thing that almost beats supes AGAIN. And this isn't a site to promote skrillex.

You're not even a Superman fan, how the [frick] are you going to question this interpretation of Superman?

Superman isn't a complex character? Says who, mother[frick]er? You and you band of dumbass friends? [frick] off, go read a damn Superman comic for once.

Kryptonite isn't even his only weakness...or his most effective. Kryptonite is the most popular and well known, you can beat Superman to death...like Doomsday did in the 90s. Doomsday = Kryptonian = Zod = Zod can kill Superman too.

It's a good thing they're not using Kryptonite because there is a misconception that the only way to beat Superman is through Kryptonite. That's wrong, I don't care if this "confuses" the general audience because only dumbasses would get confused at that. It's so simple to understand!

[frick]! It's like the movie can't win! When they change something, they're changing EVERYTHING! When they leave something familiar, REHASH!

Stop trolling!

I think you should re-edit the first few paragraphs. Not all of it makes sense.

Wherein I agree:
Casting looks weak. Laurence Fishbourne is an interesting choice. Overall, no one excites me.
No Kryptonite: no big deal. Since they are putting everything else in it...may else well have 'meteor rocks.'

After ten years of "Smallville," the journey becoming Superman could be told in abbreviated fashion.

The costume is terrible. Hope it ends with his wearing something more traditional.

@misteriousstranger, sorry but u Dont seem familiar with the character, supes is one of the most difficult characters to deal with (ask bryan Singer) and most of what un said does not make any sense at all; have u EVER read supes? I bet u know nothing else, but just doomsday which is what everybody knows.

Batman begins, blade, x men, Thor etc didn't stick to the original material because we all know it. Then ppl would complain that they already know the story before seeing the film. I good example is the first spiderman film because of comics and cartoons I knew everything that was going to happen even the goblins death by his own glider is straight from the comic. These characters have been going for years, you have to change the stories to keep ppl interested. I bet you would complain either way the story went.

How about watching the movie before judging it. If it sucks then start bashing it, but until this is all bullshit. Sounds like another ignorant person who has read nothing of Superman.

keeping Superman traditional didn't work, Superman returns anyone?

Supes needs a major change in cinema, thats what this movie is trying to accomplish. The costume is not perfect but I think it's step in the right direction. This won't be your dads Superman, obviously they are taking liberties and using stuff like Birthright and Earth One as a foundation in the way Batman Begins used Year One, The Dark Knight used Long Halloween and Rises used Knightfall and No Mans Land.

As Marketing? Why would they Market a movie that is not even coming out until two more months now? Plus you have Ironman 3 which is high in marketing as of this moment, it would be imprudent to put Man Of Steel into high marketing right now.

Thank god some of you people don't make movies cause they be disasters left and right.

I´m going to assume this is you trying to capitalize on your misgivings you´ve had about by stirring the pot due to lack of Kryponite. To be honest I don´t like that either, I really think its not a good idea. But the beauty of Superman myth is how many different ways you can take the character, and, I really think this take is interesting, its adding layers that can be explored. I hope Krytonite does come back. Maybe its actually some Lex makes, out of minerals found on a krytonian ship. I don´t know, but its ok its not in the first film, cause realistically why would it be. Its when he faces a human enemy searching for his weakness that this will come into play surely.

[frick] Skrillix. And no.

The marketing campaign has barely started. It's called pacing. I don't want to know what happens with this movie before it is even released. We know about as much for MOS as for Star Trek and that has been very successful in revving up the anticipation for the movie.

This article is Bullshit...U have no idea of the Superman mythology. Read some Superman comics. hell just search the internet....then come back and write a proper article. To slam a movie B4 its released is stupid and dumb. Read the Death of Superman. Doomsday would b good 4 a 3rd movie as we would have an established Superman, U can't kill the Supes in the 1st movie as people of Metropolis don't know him and they would not care.

Hey isn't this guy Jacky Timish or something. I remember that guy had the same hard on for Skrillex and said he would be a better composer than Zimmer. That opinion alone makes all other opinions of this article invalid. Seriously how can you take anyone seriously that thinks Skrillex would be a better choice than Zimmer. All this dude is doing with this article is trying to drum up enough discourse so he can make main. This is passive aggressive trolling at its best.

The easiest way to date your movie is use contemporary music. That's why Lucas didn't use Disco with Star Wars and that's why nobody is going to use Skrillex (shutter) with this film.

You my friend are a retard. Henry Cavill does look like Superman and the casting is fine. It makes sense that the villain is zod. Doomsday for a first movie WTF? It also makes sense the fact that kryptonians are engineered. They are advanced people. And Skrillex for a movie like Man of Steel? Dont make me laugh. Oh i already did. The only thing i think they kinda could have changed was lois hair. But oh well those are details. I think the movie will be the greatest comic book movie of all time. Man of Steel FTW
