ChicagoBusiness reported earlier today on the whereabouts of the new superman film .Heres what they had say:
Downtown Chicago is expected to see 11 days of film crews and possible star sightings in mid-August for “Man of Steel” as shooting of the Warner Bros. The Superman epic also gets underway near far west suburban Plano next week.
Specific locations in Chicago are still unknown — no permit requests have been filed yet — but the city has been advised that shooting of exterior scenes in and around the Loop will take place from Aug. 7 to Aug. 17, weather permitting. “The dates have shored up,” said Chicago Film Office Director Richard Moskal.
That’s fewer days than hoped for by the supporting cast of Chicago film industry officials, unions and vendors eager to play a role as the big-budget picture rolls into town. But there had been concern that computer graphics or Canadian locales might steal even more scenes from Chicago’s role as Metropolis.
“It turns out their needs for Metropolis exteriors have whittled down,” said Mr. Moskal. While Warner is “still tweaking many creative aspects, it seems there was far more digital work and perhaps less of a need for practical on the scene filming.”
Still shooting under Warner’s official codename “Autumn Frost,” the movie is widely known in the industry to be the first in a new series of Superman films by “300” director Zack Snyder, who recently held casting calls for extras in the city and suburbs, which were mobbed.
The name of the movie is actually “Man of Steel,” not the widely reported “Superman: Man of Steel,” a Warner spokeswoman noted, confirming that while “the bulk of the shoot is in Vancouver,” there are plans to shoot in Chicago next month. “Why would they bother going to Chicago if they’re not going to use Chicago?”
The film stars Henry Cavill as Superman/Clark Kent, Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Michael Shannon as Superman’s foe, General Zod. Clark Kent’s adoptive Earth parents are being played by Diane Lane and Kevin Costner. Cast as his real parents are Russell Crowe and Julia Ormond.
Pre-production staging started Wednesday at an IHop restaurant in Aurora, according to sources, but the Warner spokeswoman could not confirm that location. Filming starts Monday, and some scenes are planned for an industrial park next to DuPage County Airport.
Crews have been busy for months building sets in downtown Plano, including facades of buildings as well as a gas station and six actual buildings. “Our hardware store is very pleased with their purchases, and also our lumber yard,” said Mayor Bob Hausler.
Plano’s sales tax receipts rose 12% in April and more is expected from May and June when most of the work was underway. “That’s fairly significant for the city of Plano,” he added.
In addition to a day of filming in Plano on Aug. 6, the crew expects to be working there extensively from Aug. 22 to Aug. 29.
“There are streets that will be closed,” said Mr. Hausler. “Unless it’s someone who’s actually part of the movie, we wouldn’t encourage anybody to come to Plano on days of filming. There will be a lot of security, and nobody will be able to see anything.”
However, tourists are encouraged to come see the sets being built (and spend money) in Plano, which presumably plays the rural Kansas town of Smallville where Superman grew up.
“Man of Steel” opens in theaters on June 14, 2013. what do you think ? are you excited ?
