SUPERMAN: It's Been One Year Since Henry Cavill Announced His Return As DCEU's Man Of Steel - What Went Wrong?

Believe it or not, yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of Henry Cavill announcing his return as Superman after a cameo in Black Adam. Fans remain unhappy, but we're now looking back at what happened.

What a difference a year can make.

On October 24, 2022, Henry Cavill officially announced that he would be returning as Superman. The actor had been absent from the DC Extended Universe since shooting Justice League's reshoots in 2017; while we've heard he was happy with Joss Whedon's approach to the Man of Steel - perhaps explaining why he didn't take part in filming additional scenes for Zack Snyder's Justice League - the actor was less pleased with how those scenes were received.

With Warner Bros. intent on making the movie's November release date (so studio execs would receive their bonuses), Cavill had to have the lower half of his face swapped out with a digital version because he wasn't allowed to shave off his Mission: Impossible - Fallout moustache. The result was laughable and faced widespread ridicule.

Alleged disagreements over money followed and, after Cavill refused to shoot a cameo in Shazam!, it seemed Warner Bros. was happy to move on without him.

Five years later, Dwayne Johnson used his sway as an A-List box office draw to force the studio's hand into bringing Cavill back for a cameo in Black Adam. That was done with the intention of setting up a Black Adam vs. Superman crossover, a movie Johnson and Warner Bros. were sure had all the makings of a mega-hit.

Even after word of Cavill's cameo was leaked in advance, Black Adam still flopped; there was still talk of a Man of Steel sequel, but after Warner Bros. was acquired by Discovery, the new leadership at the studio decided to take a different approach to its DC Comics adaptations by forming DC Studios.

Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad director James Gunn and veteran producer Peter Safran were tasked with taking charge of a new DCU and it only took them a couple of months to decide they didn't want Cavill.

Clearly unhappy, the actor issue a statement which read, "I will, after all, not be returning as Superman. After being told by the studio to announce my return back in October, prior to their hire, this news isn’t the easiest, but that’s life. The changing of the guard is something that happens. I respect that."

"James and Peter have a universe to build. I wish them and all involved with the new universe the best of luck, and the happiest of fortunes."

David Corenswet has since hired to star as Superman: Legacy's lead and there's a fair bit of excitement surrounding the movie. However, with yesterday marking the one-year anniversary of Cavill announcing his short-lived DCEU return, many fans have once again been making their disappointment known across social media.

Beyond the calls to #RestoreTheSnyderVerse, plenty of people are still upset with how Cavill was embarrassed but, as he says, it was a changing of the guard that he got caught in the middle of. A lot of fans are also resolute in their belief he should be brought back, though the moment for that has arguably passed (Gunn also made the decision to cut his cameo in The Flash).

Do you believe Warner Bros. Discovery and DC Studios were wrong to fire Cavill as Superman?

Would have been nice if he had a solo movie outside of Snyder.

Cavill had his moments in the role imo but overall , just didn’t do it for me…

However , it was through no fault of his own and just came down to execution or lack thereof imo.

Henry deserved better given how he seemed to genuinely love the character but oh well.

@TheVisionary25 - It is such a shame too. Given better content and direction he could've knocked it out the park. And I actually like his costume and look in Black Adam, finally gave him the spit curl in his hair.

And next week I will post the headline "it's been 1 year since I stupidly said I stand behind James Gunn's decision to reboot the universe because he will surely start completely fresh with nothing returning from the DCEU which is exactly what the franchise needs!"

Little did I know...

Warner Brothers is going to rue that day! I hope Henry Cavill throws a F*CK Warner Brothers party when it is announced they are being sold off for the third time. Man of Steel was and is a wasted opportunity...and why? Because some narcissistic, moron who takes credit for other peoples work, lies to the public, and engages in inappropriate jokes, and thinks crap films are great is somehow in charge of the DC studios. Boy...I am sure this will work out well!?!?

Still as gutted now as I was a year ago.
This PR mishandling of allowing Cavill to announce his return is mind boggling. I mean, WB execs had tasked James Gunn with writing a new Superman script a year prior which was to be a fresh reboot from the outset, and said script was all but complete at that point in time. What an unprecedented shit show.

I think most people here just like to complain. People complain about him as Superman. People complain about why he’s not playing Superman anymore. And I don’t blame them. It’s pointless articles like this that get people in a negative mindset. Where’s the article called “All The Things That went Right With HC playing Superman.”
It’s done. This role made him millions of dollars. No one knew HC before he was cast as Superman. He doesn’t have to work a day in his life with the amount of money he made.
New chapter is coming. Let’s hope for the best. A good DC movie is also good for Marvel.

In what fukcin' world do you think he doesn't have to work another day in his life? What do you think he buys? Where do you think he shops at? Do you think he only buys low-costing items? If the guy was so well off, why did he agree to return as Superman? How much do you actually think he got paid to play a role that Zack Snyder wouldn't even let him play a third time in his third appearance? Cavill was barely in Justice League in either version. Cavill had 30 minutes of HIS screen time cut from Batman Versus Superman. If anything, it was Zack Snyder who was fukcing Cavill over. They were decreasing Cavill's screen time in each subsequent movie he's appeared in. How do you play Superman and only appear in three movies? How does Wonder Woman show up in more movies than you?

And in what universe did Marvel Studios success help Warner Bros? It didn't help one movie they made. Warner suffered while Disney profited.
