SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Reveals When We'll Get A First Look At David Corenswet's Superman Costume

Supermam: Legacy writer and director James Gunn has shared an update about when we'll get to see actor David Corenswet suited up as the Man of Tomorrow, and it sounds like we're in for a long wait...

Despite delays caused by the Hollywood strikes, Superman: Legacy is still expected to begin shooting early next year. DC Studios co-CEO and filmmaker James Gunn has assured fans the reboot will be released as planned in July 2025, kicking off the new DCU in style alongside Waller and Creature Commandos

We're all keen for a first look at David Corenswet suited up as the new Man of Steel, but Gunn has now confirmed it won't be heading our way for a very long time.

Responding to a fan on Instagram who asked when we'll get a suit reveal, Gunn simply said, "Definitely not until after we're filming."

Typically, we'd expect an official photo to be released before cameras roll on a movie as big as this one; alas, it seems there's no risk of Supes being spotted in set photos, suggesting the movie will primarily shoot his scenes behind closed doors in a studio. This sort of timescale likely puts a suit reveal on track for next summer...right in time for Comic-Con in San Diego.

Gunn also shared a casting update by revealing, "[We're] running out of characters to announce but there will be a couple more soon." Hopefully, he's referring to Lex Luthor and Superman: Legacy's rumoured big bad

Finally, quizzed on whether his movie will have a dark or light tone, the DC Studios boss responded, "It will have both. Like most storytelling (and life)."

These updates leave us with plenty to think about but the long wait for a first look at Superman is going to hurt. Still, it makes sense in a lot of ways to hold off on promoting the movie in any way until next summer, especially as Warner Bros. will be keen to do what it can to get people to disassociate this reboot from the DCEU.

Superman: Legacy tells the story of Superman's journey to reconcile his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing as Clark Kent of Smallville, Kansas. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way, guided by human kindness in a world that sees kindness as old-fashioned.

David Corenswet is playing the Man of Steel, while Rachel Brosnahan has been tapped to star as Lois Lane. other recent casting additions include Isabela Merced as Hawkgirl, Edi Gathegi as Mister Terrific, Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner, Anthony Carrigan as Metamorpho, and Gabriela de Faría as The Engineer.

Skyler Gisondo is rumoured to be playing Jimmy Olsen and we recently learned Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 star Kurt Russell may be in the running for Jor-El.

Superman: Legacy is currently set to be released in theaters on July 11, 2025.

If only the costume was the biggest thing to worry about...

@Urubrodi - I just hope they don't try that goofy looking one that Cavill had to wear. I mean, it looked rubbery and those little engraved emblems all over the suit was too much. Also, BRING BACK THE RED TRUNKS!

@lazlodaytona - Legit. And ever since I saw this promo I couldn't help but think of it as the "Twizzler's suit"

@lazlodaytona - you seriously said goofy and red trunks in the same sentence and not related to each other

First, keep the costume basic. In the pic above I'd simply choose second row, second to the left.

Secondly, Superman is my no. 1 hero of them all and I can't wait for the film to come out, but Gunn needs to take a break from social media. It's too much, almost pointless information. Keeping most info close to the chest creates a mystery about and anticipation for the film.

@lazlodaytona - I disagree. The more Gunn tweets the better. Make it so!

Running out of Characters to announce? WTH?? You have announced all these super powered characters and Lois. Still have Lex (big deal). What about Perry and Jimmy? Traditional takes or the more modern takes? Will Jimmy survive the first movie or will he get Gunned?

Jimmy and Perry are just as important to Superman's Legacy as is Lois and Lex.

@Moun10dew - Dude, chill. He said ‘running out’. Not we’ve run out. He very clearly left enough there to imply whatever characters you’re still waiting for can still be announced. Maybe wait for them all to be announced before you fly off the handle

Mrnorth1921 - 11/20/2023, 6:24 AM
@Moun10dew - they did announce jimmy. It’s the kid from that movie dealing with rusty from national lampoon sequel. His oldest son.

CerealKiller1 - 11/20/2023, 7:36 AM
@Mrnorth1921 - They actually didn’t announce that. He was named the top choice for the role by several scoopers, but nothing official has ever been said about the actor or characters involvement

Rachel Brosnahan's an actual method actor. Y'know, the "using past experiences to influence your performance" type, which is what method acting actually means. Whatever you hear Joaquin Phoenix do for a role, that's not method acting.
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/20/2023, 6:55 AM
@CoHost - All I've seen on method acting has been about the actor inhabiting the role his playing to the fullest even when he's off screen, basically becoming the character during shooting. But in the end of the day as long as they deliver a great performance, it doesn't matter how they did it.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 11/20/2023, 7:38 AM
@Urubrodi - ‘But in the end of the day as long as they deliver a great performance, it doesn't matter how they did it’

That’s not a great take. ‘Method acting’ is not an excuse to be a complete asshole to fellow actors and crew or so weird shit for the week of it. Most actors are able to deliver a great performance without all that bullshit
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/20/2023, 9:11 AM
@CerealKiller1 - What part from what I said even remotely implies that though? Being an asshole towards castmates and method acting are not directly related. There are cases where some actors let the method acting go overboard and behave like a dick to everyone around (e.g. Jared Leto) but that is not a rule. Any actor with common sense should be able to turn down the method acting when not in front of the camera.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 11/20/2023, 9:44 AM
@Urubrodi - Literally the sentence I quoted is where you said it. You might not have ‘meant’ that, but that’s literally what you said. ‘As long as they deliver a great performance, it doesn’t matter how they did it’
Urubrodi
Urubrodi - 11/20/2023, 9:51 AM
@CerealKiller1 - Well but come on mate, just a bit of common sense here. I was clearly talking about the acting methodology. Not about how they behave on set or treat people. But anyways, just a misunderstanding.
CerealKiller1
CerealKiller1 - 11/20/2023, 11:15 AM
As I said, you may not have meant it that way, but it is what you said. And people on this site tend to have some horrible opinions, so it’s hard to assume the best in somebody’s comment, always got to follow up and clarify. Sorry if it came across confrontational!

I'm not really too excited for this.

That new animated series on adult swim REALLY scratched my itch when it comes to Superman. Damn, that show was good. Can't wait for season 2.

@MaximusTheMad - I need to check that out still

Im cautiously optimistic for this but Superman & Lois was the one that really stratched my itch for the character.

Sucks that’s being cut short but oh well.
