SUPERMAN: LEGACY Director James Gunn Says He's "Undecided" On Red Trunks

Will we see the new Man of Steel wear the iconic, but divisive, red trunks in Superman: Legacy? Director James Gunn has shared an update on the costume, and it sounds like he's yet to decide...

Though it may seem like a trivial thing to some, quite a few fans are still very passionate about Superman's undies!

The debate about whether the Man of Steel should/shouldn't wear his classic red trunks on the outside of his iconic costume always resurfaces whenever a new live-action movie is in the works, and fans are curious about the direction James Gunn will take for the latest big-screen iteration of the legendary hero in Superman: Legacy.

Gunn Tweeted out an image of the various takes on the character we've seen over the years to mark #SupermanDay, and when he was asked about the trunks, he responded with the following.

Christopher Reeve wore the trunks in Richard Donner's movies, and Brandon Routh followed suit in Superman Returns. Then, back in 2011, DC Comics launched the "New 52," and introduced a new take on the Man of Tomorrow whose costume was notably sans shorts.

Henry Cavill then ditched the trunks for Man of Steel in 2013, and most fans seemed happy enough with the change - but there are still those who'd like to see the legendary hero return to his original look.

Which would you prefer? Drop us a comment down below.

It's looking like our new Superman will be either Nicholas Hoult, David Corenswet or Tom Brittney, while Emma Mackey, Rachel Brosnahan and Phoebe Dynevor are said to be in the running for Lois.

Gunn reportedly turned in the first draft of his script before the writers' strike, but that doesn't mean the production won't be impacted going forward.

“Superman: Legacy is the true foundation of our creative vision for the DC Universe. Not only is Superman an iconic part of DC lore, he is also a favorite character for comic book readers, viewers of earlier movies, and fans around the world," said Gunn during the DCU slate announcement. "I can’t wait to introduce our version of Superman who audiences will be able to follow and get to know across films, movies, animation and gaming.”

Superman: Legacy is set to hit theaters in 2025.

If he can make peacemaker’s suit look believable, the trunks should be no problem

@dragon316 - Batman works with an all-black look. Superman needs something to break-up all the blue.

@dracula - He made a silly and exaggerated version of Peacemaker, that's how it worked for him.
As many people said here before, why don't use a thick red belt instead? And to make it look better, and closest to the red trunks, make the belt a little thicker, to occupy part of the space on his belly, and to serve as a break in the middle of all the rest of the blue. Kind of like they did with Superman and Lois design, they could even make it a little more thick. Problem solved, and you manage to please almost everyone. (Sorry red-trunk-lovers, we know you love this design, but for the most of the audience, red trunks IT'S SILLY!)

@FinnishDude - He did have that.

THIS.

This was the perfect blend of contemporary and classic all in one. Just wished that the fans agreed with it.

On another topic just finished reading Jaime Reye’s first solo series (thank you DC for movie tie in rerelease paperbacks)

The movie has a lot to live up to

Hopefully it does well enough to get a trilogy

I say go classic. If you’re going to properly reboot Superman and the DC comics go classic across the board to start, then allow outfits and characters to evolve over time.

Trunks or no trunks is an important question. Superman should look a little silly. Disarming; non-threatening. Being dressed like a vintage strongman with his little cape makes him look unassuming, like a friend; not an omnipotent god.

The solid blue makes it look like a child's onesie so it needs something to break it up.

I would wager it was fully understandable why Snyder opted not to use them, which was a notable “big” deal at the time. Despite that they can make him look good regardless, there’s no reason not to bring the trunks back. Would make so many people happy, as creepy as it is on paper to want to see a dude’s red underwear.

@Fares - Easy, it's Kryptonian fashion:

Have a (still living!) Pa Kent make a remark about they wear underwear on the outside, and Ma goes hush you, I think it's stylish.
Fares
Fares - 6/12/2023, 9:02 PM
@DalekCraigWasson - that could work. But in that case, I feel it should also be more of a running gag where people on the street would notice it to. By the sequel, it just becomes Superman's signature look that everyone knows.

Was never a fan of the trunks. Like, I'm not against them but I'm not for them either. You can incorporate the design of the trunks into the suit without making them trunks.
