Over the weekend, the first contenders for the lead roles in James Gunn's Superman: Legacy emerged, and while it's still very early days, the trades believe that up-and-comer David Corenswet is the current frontrunner to take over from Henry Cavill as our next big-screen Man of Steel.

The 29-year-old actor only has a few film and TV credits to his name, but House of Cards fans will likely recognize him as Claire Underwood's college sweetheart, Reed, and he recently appeared in Ti West's horror prequel, Pearl.

As expected, fan-art has now begun to circulate online. This impressive piece imagines how Corenswet might look suited-up as the iconic DC Comics hero, and he actually bears quite a resemble to Cavill's take on the character here.

Check out the artwork below, along with a fan-poster for the movie itself which Zack Snyder supporters are sure to find interesting!

Gunn took to Twitter shortly after the trade reports to state that he would not comment on who may or may not have auditioned for Legacy, but we do know that he is planning to see many more actors before a decision is made.

Jacob Elordi (Euphoria), and Andrew Richardson (Extrapolations) are also said to be in the mix to play Clark Kent/Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), Emma Mackey (Barbie), Phoebe Dynevor (Bridgerton), and Samara Weaving (Scream VI) reportedly read for Lois Lane.

Nicholas Hoult (Renfield) is believed to be "the only person" who is being considered for Lex Luthor at the moment.

Bro was SCULPTED FROM CLAY to play Superman. Looks more Superman than anyone else I’ve ever seen. I’d also argue Routh in Returns looked like he leapt from the panels too.

Still adore this costume. Timeless

@Superspecialawesomeguy - the costumes are your biggest fear? id be fearful that he will just repeat same beats that he has across 3 gaurdians, 1 suicide squad and 1 peacemaker series.

they should have started him off on booster gold or something.

@iceballsreborn - Time and time again we've seen people who are known for doing comedy, both acting and directing, knock it out of the park when it comes to doing something more serious. We've seen Gunn can do really great character driven scenes as well. I don't doubt he'll be fine with Superman.

If anything, he knows people know him for a certain style so he might take this opportunity to show us he is a much more well rounded director than comic book fans know him for.

@Himura - so thats true. but what scenes from his movies stand out for you in terms of really character driven? i mean some stuff in peacemaker, was good. but still its just too much Gunn'ism for me. what i think the original superman movie got so right was that while clark may have his internal conflicts, he is the best of what humans can be, if not better. synders clark was just a conflicted human being who happpened to have super powers. aside from the fact that I think the general audience is tired of these overly emotional characters with sooooo much conflict in their heads, superman should something better. to that extent the best most recent incarnation of superman is steve rogers in the MCU. thats what a modern day superman should be like. puts others above himself, his conflict is with rules vs his morals. but he keeps going. well until that crapy timetravel to the frumpy peggy.
