Producer Ilya Salkind discusses making the first three Superman movies and his thoughts for the future.

Ilya Salkind was at Wizard World Anaheim Comic Con and had quite a bit to say about Superman. He, along with his father Alexander, produced the first three movies. The original Superman went so far over budget and over schedule that it missed its original summer 1978 release and was pushed back to Christmas. The movie managed to exceed everyone's imaginations and expectations and remains one of the most revered CBM's to date.

One of the initial difficulties was in casting the title role. The Salkinds wanted an unknown but the financial backers wanted a bankable star. One of those was Sylvester Stallone, who Salkind says was “a little bit difficult to imagine” in the role, as well as James Caan, Burt Reynolds and Robert Redford. Bruce Jenner also did a screen test. “After meeting a lot of actors, such as Jon Voight, we even met Neil Diamond — don’t ask me why — I knew in my heart of hearts it had to be an unknown,” said Salkind. Still, Christopher Reeve almost did not get cast as Salkind says everyone simply thought him too skinny to play the Man of Steel.

After Superman III, the Salkinds leased the rights to the character to another company that made Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. They had attempted to make a fifth installment but relations with Warner Brothers had been strained according to Ilya:
“We came up with a script where we had Superman die, and of course the character would be reborn in the film too, so it was to be called 'Superman Lives'.”

“The politics between Warners and DC and the Salkinds were very difficult because it wasn’t their idea and they were releasing the movie, so it was a very difficult situation. They were happy with the success, but after ‘ (Superman) IV,’ they would I say made it harder and harder for us to come back and make ‘(Superman) V.’”

As for the new movie that is starting to get off the ground, Salkind said it would be important to set it in the current day and start over. “They should literally start from scratch, forgetting the previous story.” Salkind sees a true passion in the project with Christopher Nolan:
“When you have producers, directors or actors who are not really excited about a project, it shows. Something is missing on the film.”

Damn Salkinds ruined the Superman franchise as soon as they got rid of Richard Donner.

Well I hope that they not only include a great cast, story, and something that the franchise has been lacking, ACTION!!

I hope the reboot will kill Superman, if set up to a triology. I would love to see him die at the hands of doomsday! It would be [frick]ing insane, and the same time resurrected, though I did not like the whole four different supes etc, artistic freedom there please?
It would truly show a different Boy Scout. Show that though he has all this incredible powers, he is not invincible. Anyways, Hal Jordan FTW!

Thanks guys, Newsarama had some other stuff about Donner getting fired midway through Superman II.

Also, Paul Newman was originally going to be Jor-El and not Brando.

Marlon Brando got $14 million for his ten minutes on film

Marlon Brando sued the Salkinds and Warner Brothers for $50 million because he felt cheated out of the film's considerable box office profits. This is the main reason why footage of Brando does not appear in Superman 2

Not sure who is worse Brando or Salkinds

I say again - John Barrowman for Clark Kent/Superman:

Barrowman not only has the look, but the FRAME of the comicbook Superman (more so than most of the suggested Calvin Klein model wannabes that I've seen so far). If he gets in Super-shape (pun intended), he won't look like he's still starving for a sandwich! People, Superman is not a RAIL! HE'S @$#!-ING SUPERMAN FOR CHRIST'S SAKE (You know... "Faster than a speeding bullet! More powerful than a locomotive! Able to leap tall buildings in a single bound! ...can change the course of mighty rivers, bend steel in his bare hands..." etc.)!

Danny - Hamm would be brilliant if someone were to do an adaptation of DKR! Either him or Adrian Pasdar....

Why does LEEE777 have such a HARD ON for Cavill..?

As for Ilya Salkind, I would spit in his face if I saw him.

Ranger14 - 4/22/2010, 5:10 PM
No to femmie...wimpy Superman suggestions! Reeves started the trend and now names like Cavill show some people still want to follow suit. Superman should be someone we see as strong, masculine and changing in a phone booth...not as a person hiding in the closet.

Skaarsgard doesn't have the right coloring and would need to hit the weights big time to fill out his scrawny frame. Hamm has the look, but his age is borderline for me and he would need to hit the gym big time as well. I do like Hamm out of the names mentioned, if it weren't for the age thing.

Barrowman has a very "soft" build. Love his acting ability, but his masculinity is borderline for me to play the part.

For superman to work now he needs a more realistic suit. no matter what you fan boys say... superman is an alien... his suit should be alien. maybe like what they are doing with green lantern. CGI alien looking suit like never before seen on a movie. except tron ;p

I liked Brandon rouths' performance,
if we are talking right man for the job, he
did a great job. we could all sit here and nit
pick story, fx, directors, for any and all cbm's
but it gets us nowhere. so I, being objective,
and not a director, writer, producer, or actor...
just want to give some credit to the look and
attitude Brandon routh had. better than dean
Caine or that kid who played super boy on
that lame 80's show where he was in college.

Christopher Reeves was fine and all for the given moment. But can we move on w/o the C.R. comparisons! Let's get back to making an awesome SUPERMAN movie, true to comics and in right direction w/Christopher Nolan and the boys. But please stay away from the C.R. as Superman movies, PLEASE!
loganoneil
loganoneil - 4/22/2010, 8:57 PM
Ranger - Getting in shape is not a problem for a dedicated actor... look at Bale ('The Machinist' vs 'Batman Begins'). Hugh Jackman was an old song-and-dance man from Broadway before the claws, and look at him now. Gerard Butler was toned, but not '300' before he became King Leonidas. I can go on if you'd like...

LEE777 - I'm disappointed in you. I really don't care about an actor's sexual orientation, it's all about what they can bring to the character. Barrowman has a proven track record, PLUS... he REALLY does look the part:

Note - REAL blue eyes, NOT contacts (unlike SOME Superman actors who will remain nameless...)
