SUPERMAN: Warner Bros. Reportedly Developing A Live-Action RED SON Movie

Superman: Red Son tells the story of a Kal-El who crash landed in Soviet Russia rather than Kansas and a variety of sources are now reporting that a live-action adaptation of that tale is in the works...

It started with an exchange between Mark Millar and Kong: Skull Island director Jordan Vogt-Roberts which saw the latter reveal that Warner Bros. had turned down his pitch for a Superman: Red Son movie but Den of Geek claims to have heard from "very, very, very reliable sources" that the studio is looking to bring the Mark Millar penned comic to the big screen at some point in the near future.

Millar has said on Twitter that Warner Bros. has met with at least two filmmakers to discuss the property and provided a statement to the site in which he says, "I've got pals at Warner Bros but never discussed it with them. I think they're just going through their back catalogue of big books and hoping to lure in good directors as opposed to any particular interest in developing Red Son."

It's far from confirmed as happening just yet, but between the comments made by Vogt-Roberts and Millar and the site's claims that they've heard it's potentially in the works, the signs are looking good.

Superman: Red Son is a very interesting DC Comics property to adapt and isn't exactly the Superman tale we expected to see on the big screen next. Man of Steel 2 has seemingly been stuck in development hell for a while and it's not clear right now whether Henry Cavill would play a Russian (and somewhat villainous) version of the character or if the studio would recast him and new versions of Batman and Wonder Woman. It also feels like an R-Rating would suit this property well.

They just don't want a straight forward heroic Superman do they, love the comic but cannot see how they would do it.

Jordan Vogt-Roberts is a cool Director and even liked one of my tweets where I mentioned Metal Gear. Enjoyed Skull Island as well.

@SimplyAz - it's honestly kinda odd. It's one thing if the fans want a boy scout, but the critics even said they would prefer it, because of the contrast it would create.

and yet, here we are, getting red son, which isn't gonna have as much impact because of the lack of contrast.

WB sucks balls.

@ALostCause -

I'm an Arsenal fan, and we keep giving our one time great manager a new contract, even though the fans and everyone can see he is past it.
I feel the same about WB's and their attempts at a dark Superman, it's not working but they keep doing it, even though hardly anyone want's it.

@ALostCause - yea I'm on the anti-WB train, honestly wtf. Red Sun is like a What It story, if they are going to develop a side story that is inclusive of characters and questions the role of Supes why not Kingdom Come?

@scapegoatjones - What If's and similar stories are often my favorite books, as the authors are not bound by continuity. They sometimes end up being truly amazing books.

Kingdom Come has always been a favorite story for me. Maybe because in the 90's I was just old enough to truly begin to comprehend things, and I found the ultra-violence, extreme storylines and excessive pouches in comics to be just too much. I found myself wanting a return of the old-school order. Then Kingdom Come came along and just fit right in.

I would love to see that storyline adapted at some point. But I think it would be best if WB was somehow able to make this universe work for about 15-20 years, and then made a Kingdom Come trilogy. Or a miniseries on HBO or something.

Can we not just get a simple superman movie. Dont get me wrong, red son would be a perfect animated movie. But this isnt nickel and dime.

An animated movie sure, I'd be all in.

The only way I can see this working in the DCEU is if it takes place in post-Flashpoint timeline.

@MrMurdock - I'd like to see a series of DC movies next to the mainstream DCEU that is based solely on, and explicitly describes itself as a bunch of Elseworlds.

@nikgrid - he just says they're shopping for directors, and that it's not really in development. I don't know why he would make that up.

Look man, Cavill even rescued a Turtle, while being himself, just let him be Superman.
