UPDATE: MAN OF STEEL Struggles During Second Weekend; Nears $400M Worldwide

The Man of Steel may be tough enough to tackle General Zod, but he failed to fight off Monsters University and World War Z at the North American box office this weekend, suffering a more severe drop than initially expected. However, it's not ALL bad news! Read on for details.

It's been a busy weekend at the North American box office, with holdover Man of Steel forced to battle it out with two high profile releases in the form of Pixar's Monsters University and Brad Pitt starrer World War Z. The former already has a worldwide total of $136 million after only four days of release with an international cume of $54.5 million and a domestic total of $82 million. These numbers make it the second highest opening weekend of all-time for Pixar, beaten only by 2010's Toy Story 3. World War Z meanwhile has left many stunned by earning a whopping $112 million worldwide, $66 million of which came from North America. This actually means that it had the biggest opening for an original live action film since James Cameron's Avatar all the way back in 2009 (!). As for Man of Steel, it obviously slipped down to third place this weekend with £12.7 million on Friday, $16.2 million on Saturday and a predicted three day gross of $41.2 million (that's a drop of around 65%). Quite a bit more than expected. Its overseas total is $135.6 million and that gives it a worldwide total of at least $345.6 million in just 11 days of release.

UPDATE: More good news! While Man of Steel may have dropped more than expected domestically, Deadline now reports that a strong overseas showing this weekend has resulted in the Superman reboot grossing $398.3 million worldwide. Depending how things go from here, it will reach $400 million by later today or early tomorrow. Stay tuned for further updates!

So Man of Steel has $345.6 million.

That's around the same numbers as Batman Begins. That's not so bad consider the merchandise also made $200 million.

I think Man of Steel should have around 700 million+ by the time it's finished. So yeah....sequel and Justice League.

Man of Steel is doing well when you consider this is a reboot, and it is also been tasked with essentially getting people hyped about Superman again.

Despite it's critical reception being mixed, audiences seem to be loving the movie (Cinemascore A-), and it is getting good word of mouth.

Basically, I think we all got caught up in the hype when saying it'll make a billion, but if this can get between 600 to 800 then it'll be a success.

Lol Grif.

I also stated Iron Man 3 would make a billion but nobody gives me credit for that.

Although WB's releasing the film before these two movies just didn't seem like a smart move.

One thing Marvel has is a great release schedule. Now I am not saying their movies wouldn't have earned what they did, but there is no denying releasing in May, or November means very little in the way of competition, and in fact it is something I commend them on, and WB should have made MoS the last movie of the Summer.

"Also $345.6M was Friday's total. It hasn't included the weekend yet."

No. That is MOS' weekend estimated total.

imo Man of Steel should've been released before the summer as the months leading up to this summer sucked ass in terms of film.

The word of mouth on MoS is okay, not great. That explains a lot.

MoS is going to make worldwide about TASM made.

It's a good movie but like Iron Man 3 doesn't deserve a billion.
kadetra

Why would anybody expect a reboot to make 1billion?
Mechagino
Mechagino - 6/23/2013, 10:14 AM
I'm still sadden by the fact World War Z is doing well. But here's hoping that film drops considerably lower in its second week and man of steel rises above it. :D

@Grif

So let me get this straight. You think MOS is failing after just 9 days in the box office?

$345 million in 9 days and over $200 million domestically and you don't think there will be a sequel?

Transformers did $224 million in 13 days.

MOS is on its way as the most successful re-boot of all time!!!!
EdgyOutsider
EdgyOutsider - 6/23/2013, 10:17 AM
It may be the most successful reboot so far but, definitely not the best.

Some people just need to hate. The numbers are good, this is still just an estimate as Sunday's total numbers are not yet done. They were expecting a 71% drop, so 65% is not bad, especially with competition. MOS was a great cbm.
DCMarvelzombie1228
DCMarvelzombie1228 - 6/23/2013, 10:20 AM
I think MOS 2 will hit 200 billion dollars mark my words!!!! "muhahaha all hail the grouch"
RaMan
RaMan - 6/23/2013, 10:20 AM
Superman Returns earned $200 million domestically & $390 million worldwide in 120 days(4 months)

MOS is close to making those figures in 11 days.

Do the math. MOS is on it's way as the highest grossing re-boot of all time and it will easily surpass Amazing Spiderman even with the competition.

I could see it coming back to the top after people realize WWZ is just another zombie movie (getting tired of zombies being [frick]ing everywhere), and MU is just another Pixar movie.
