Will Michael Shannon Utter The Famous Phrase 'Kneel Before Zod' In Man Of Steel?

In a very brief interview with Empire Michael Shannon comments on whether or not we will hear those famous lines uttered from the lips of General Zod in Superman 2 in Zack Snyder's Superman: The Man of Steel

Empire have finally asked the question all of us having been hoping someone would - 'Will General Zod ask Superman to kneel?'. Watch the video below to see Shannon's response.

No, its not a sure thing that there will be any kneeling in the film, its not a dead issue, but its not a certainty.

Interesting that things are still up in the air regarding Zod's development in the film, and that things aren't set in stone - this probably points to the script being developed along side shooting.

Would you like to hear General Zod say 'KNEEL'? Share your thoughts below.

he should mix it up I suppose. Rather than say KNEEL BEFORE ZOD, he should just simply say KNEEL in a very menacing way

Leave the old Superman films alone. They've served their purpose. Can we please move on?!

ComicBuzz - 10/27/2011, 5:54 AM
@Fenlion - C'mon man, if all they kept from the old Superman films was that line - would it be a bad thing? I can just imagine the cheer in the cinema if it was in the trailer!

With all due respect to him, no references to the Donnerverse, please. You all saw how that worked out for Bryan Singer.

It depends, for example, the Donnerverse references on "Smallville" were great.

@fenlion - sorry to disagree but we're talking about a phrase here, what [frick]ed up synger's flick was the whole movie concept.

It's like the "with great power comes great responsibility" from the "old" Spider-man movies. Should it be banished? It's a classic line.

How can you have Zod without him demanding "Kneel before Zod!". He just ain't Zod if he's not demanding lesser beings to kneel before him. He doesn't have to repeat it until he plays it out, but it should be in there at least once. Come on, it's a classic line.

It wasn't Donnerverse references that killed Singer's film, it was a really crappy story that did.

Honestly, I would hope that Zod's appearance in this film would only be during the Kryptonian part.

It doesn't mean the script is being developed alongside shooting at all (and in any case, all scripts have changes big or small during production). All it means is they haven't decided yet if they'll include that one specific line. Geez.

Oh, and I hop he does say it. Or at very least a menacing "Kneel" as someone above suggested.

titansupes - Wow - chill out, what you said is exactly what I meant by a 'developing script'. Relax...

I could deal with a simple "kneel" I'm sure they'll be slipping it in there somewhere in some fashion..

I hate how everyone holds the directors so close to Superman mythos. Don't use the "Donnor" theme song or the "Donner" costume or the "Donnor" lines. This is about Superman, not an old director and if it ain't broke, well u already know. It looks like this movie is gonna be a big explosion fest, not really bad but it's gonna miss the real point of Superman and doubt it will catch the characters true essence. I mean look at the suit, navy blue and burgendy, the dark Superman. Blah.

Yeah, bet he'll say "Kneel", doubt they'll go with the whole sentence... Which is weird, it kinda became Zod's thing, his "It'sclobbering time".

But it's so teid to Superman II. Hard decision.

@NextHero whatever theme song they come up with will not be half as epic and cool as Superman: The Movie's themesong ;)

"Kneel before Zod, and while you're down there..."
AC1
AC1 - 10/27/2011, 8:12 AM
I think they should include it. I heard that phrase and associated it with the character long before I watched Superman 2. It's like his catch phrase, and it's just one line. It doesnt have to be the same situation as in Superman 2, and it should only be used once instead of the way it was repeated throughout that movie. He has to say it. It's hardly a nod to Superman 2, more of a line that should always be associated with the character, such as Uncle Ben's "With great power...", The Thing's "It's clobberin' time", Human Torch's "Flame On", Cap yelling "Avengers Assemble", or even the Joker's laugh.

I mean, imagine Zod giving Superman a major ass whooping in front of the whole of Metropolis. They fight in the sky, and Zod hits Superman so hard that he hurtles to the ground. Zod pursues.

In the middle of a crowd of spectators, Zod slowly lands on the ground in front of his heavily injured foe. Superman tries to stand.

"Kneel before Zod" The General coldly orders the hero in front of everyone.
Superman looks like he is going to follow the order, before looking up at Zod, replying "Never", and then flying at him, lifting them both high above Metropolis before beating the General to a pulp.

I imagine the final and definite fight, when Supes it's about to fall and Zod screams 'kneeeel'. Then, on the very last second, Sup will prevail and defeat him.
What I really really really really really want is some reference to Brainiac. At least a small cameo, come on!

I hope not. Already disappointed that of all Superman's rogues gallery, they've been so unoriginal as to pick Zod & co AGAIN.

If they repeat so much as one thing else from the previous movies, including that cheesy line, then I may plunge into a pit of despair I may never recover from.

I could care less if they use the line or not, its not like its gonna make the movie any better.

He didn't say he wasn't going to say it, just that there wasn't going to be any kneeling. He can say it and Superman doesn't oblige. Umm... yeah. :-P

if they keep anything then they should make it the theme music.it will never be bettered and will always be the signature tune for supes.but i dont think he could say that line without being compared unfavourably to stamp.
i`d love to hear it but it isnt fair on the actor tbh.

That was THE most exciting interview I've seen, ever!

From the way Shannon was posed, sitting, and constantly looking off into the other direction did you also get the impression he didn't want to be there?

I don't want him to just say it. I want him and the whole cast to break out in a giant musical number entitled "kneel before Zod " Bollywood style.
