BOX OFFICE: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Opens To $4.6M On Thursday Night

The battle between Guardians of the Galaxy and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles at the North American box office this weekend has intensified as the Michael Bay produced reboot opened to a strong $4.6 million on Thursday night. Read on for details!

$4.6 million. Not bad, eh? Well, it's nowhere near Guardians of the Galaxy's $11.2 million from last week, but this is still a strong start for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and not too different to Maleficent (which earned $4 million when it opened before grossing $69.4 million during its opening weekend). However, analysts believe that the movie will debut with $40 - $45 million, while Paramount believe it could be closer to $50 million. Meanwhile, Guardians of the Galaxy is going to prove itself to be some serious competition as it enters its second week of release, and there's every chance that it WILL be #1 again for the three day period. For now though, we're going to have to wait and see, so stay tuned for updates! It's going to be a close one. What will you guys be watching this weekend? Be sure to let us know your thoughts in the usual place...

Holy shit, that's nothing compared to Guardians.

This movie isn't going to make even half of what GOTG made.

Went to see GOTG 4 times and all 4 screenings were absolutely packed.

TMNT was awesome... the kids and myself had such a great time enjoying this new take... 4/5 for me. Like GOTG it has it's plot hole issue but overall I really like the direction and the personality of the turtles.

TMNT was fun and the fight scenes were top notch.

No armchair analysis. Just a congratulations to a job well done to the TMNT franchise. This is great news, ESPECIALLY considering how many little kids are going to be freaked out by those steroided turtles.

Just watched TMNT earlier, was a enjoyable movie.
Dont see it beating GOTG in the box office though, just like the winter soldier i think they will be number one for a couple of weeks.

No interest in TMNT. I liked the franchise in my childhood, but nothing about this new movie has me interested.

With the explosion of comic based movies as well as 80s nostalgia, one has to pick and choose what to support. I would rather see a good movie like Guardians of the Galaxy three times than go see TMNT or another Sony Spider-Meh. They don't seem worth the risk.

I love the hate for TMNT from people who haven't seen the film yet... Everyone I know that's watched it has loved it.

Armchair box office analysis is almost as funny as the "armchair viewing" we see from so many users :o)

@Jollem

"sometimes it seems like feige may own this site :)"

Your beliefs and snarky comment just backfired at the fact that Feige also produced The Amazing Spider-Man.

I'm not taking any chances in spending money on any movie with Michael Bay and Jon Liebesman involved in it. I'll wait till my bro in law pirates it, then I'll see how much of a travesty it is. Lol.

@tarzen Yes and no. At first I was a bit eh but it made sense with the story that they're telling and ended up not bothering me too much overall.
