Jonathan Liebesman On TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES Reboot, Alien Race Comments, Motion Capture & More

In an interview with Collider at the Wrath Of The Titans press junket, director Jonathan Liebesman talked about his upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot. The other day, producer Michael Bay stated that the turtles will be "From an alien race", causing a massive hubbub among the fans. Liebesman suggested that the "alien" aspect of the movie is actually straight from the series, while also confirming that he's working with co-creator Kevin Eastman on the concepts of the film. In addition, the director discussed the action vs. the story in the film, as well as hinting at using motion capture for the turtles. Liebesman also said that they’ll probably be shooting later this year ("September, or something”) and they’re thinking about shooting in Canada.

On The "Alien" Aspect Of The Reboot...
“Look, it’s so funny—if everyone was such a die-hard fan, they would know that the TCRI canisters where the ooze comes from. That is alien ooze. Now I’m not saying what Michael said is exactly what the movie is, because we’re sitting in a room now figuring everything out. So we don’t know, but we are like Michael said: we’re expanding it, and the expansion will be true to the mythology. I promise you: fans will love it.”

On Working With Kevin Eastman...
“Whatever mythology we’re building on or expanding is coming from that guy, Kevin Eastman’s head, who created the Turtles in the first place. And so everything will tie in with the mythology; fans will be extremely excited with what we’re coming up with. A lot of it is stuff he’s wanted to do for a long time, but just hasn’t had the opportunity because now we have the budget and things on this film to expand it in the right way. And so, I’m happy that everyone is extremely passionate, and they will not be disappointed. It’s all coming from the best possible place for this franchise.”

On Whether Or Not The Turtles Will Be CGI'd...
“All I’ll say is that I love how they did [The Rise of the Planet of the Apes]. That was exceptional.”

On How Much Action Is In The Movie...
“We’re definitely into the action, but for me what’s more important than that is that it’s a story about brotherhood and friendship and responsibility. Right now, I’m with the characters because those are what attracted me to the movie. They’re the best characters I’ll have had a chance to deal with.”

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot hits theaters December 25th, 2013.

@nailbiter: But if there's one thing we have to give Bay props for is his good taste and execution in visuals

OK all the die hard fans have been saying as long as it's just the ooze and not the turtles themselves that come from space. Maybe this guy should actually read comments, and yes Nail ur right the worst thing would be the CGI I loved the suits in the original

Use motion capture. That's the only sensible way to go.

Urm... Rise of the Apes was done by WETA. I bet five thousand dollars TAINT won't be done by WETA. It'll be done by ILM, or probably Digital Domain.

If they can make the turtles something like the apes in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, then it would be great. And yes, that's quite a relieving statement regarding the alien-thing. I don't remember much about T.C.R.I. being an Utroms' base, but if that's what they're talking about, then I'll surely be fine. (Although I'm yet to be that much convinced, either.) Also, if so, then Krang being the villain should be likely, as well.

If the "Alien" stuff has to do with the ooze being infused with some kind of extraterrestrial energy, which in-turn mutates the turtles, I'm okay with that.

BUT, it's sounding more like Bay wants to have a planet full of Ninja Turtles, and that the main characters are their off-spring.

I mean, purely from a cinematic stand point, Bay's movies deliver on action, really the 1st and 3rd(less so) Transformers movies weren't that bad. So, I don't think we have to worry about how it's going to look, it's just the story we've to worry about and how annoying they are going to make Casey and April

Bay didn't say alien origin, he said alien race. If he thinks that alien race and alien origin is the same think than he is more of a dumass that I thouht

This movie could go 1 of two ways IMO

It will either be a Green Lantern type flop
or an X-Men First Class type surprise

See that's stuff with the ooze is fine but that WASN'T what Boom Boy said was it? If they didn't want fans to get annoyed then they should have made sure that [frick]witt didn't mislead people. His words were: "These turtles are from an alien race"..not: "The ooze that transforms them is from an alien race".

I hope they give Donatello and Michelangelo a lot more screen time than they did in TMNT. I was really upset that the whole movie revolved around Leonardo and Raphael while Mike and Don only had a few good moments. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Just thought of this: if the ooze doesn't take part in this, does that mean we won't see Splinter? Or is he also an alien?

Spilnter effing better be in it.

I'm not sure if I'm being sarcastic.

the fanboys already said the ooze is alien and that most likely will mutant the Turtles.

Jonathan Liebesman cant attack the fanboys for what hes idiot friend Michael Bay said. Bay saying the Turtles are from a Alien race thats something else then what Jonathan Liebesman saying.

the truth is Michael Bay needs to SHUT THE F**K UP when talking about the process of the movie.
