There's been no shortage of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles video games released in recent months, but a new one has just been announced for release in 2024. Inspired by the most recent movie, Teenage Mutant NInja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem, it will serve as a sequel of sorts.

Although specific plot details have not been revealed, the game will take place months after the events of the movie. It's unclear if it will tie into the mid-credits scene of the first movie, which teased the appearance of Shredder.

What we do know is that the game will feature visuals inspired by the film's painterly art style and will offer "energetic ninja teamwork gameplay with a humorous narrative." This sounds pretty in line with the general tone of the movie which focused more on the teenage aspect of the turtles. The mention of "teamwork" seems to suggest the game could also feature multiplayer gameplay.

The game is being published by Outright Games, a leader in the family-friendly interactive entertainment space. Outright has worked to publish many video games inspired by family-friendly IP, including Transformers, Baby Shark, Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, and Justice League, to name a few. No developer for the TMNT: Mutant Mayhem game was revealed yet.

Although there have been numerous TMNT games, including the most recent hit TMNT: Shredder's Revenge by Dotemu, this will be the first game based on the hit movie Mutant Mayhem.

"It's exciting to launch our first console game set in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem universe, especially as the franchise only continues to grow," said Doug Rosen, SVP, Games and Emerging Media, Paramount. "The vibrancy of this new film's animation lends itself perfectly to video games, and we can't wait for everyone to play it."

Outright Games' COO Stephanie Malham added: "Nickelodeon is one of our longest standing licensing collaborators and we're overjoyed to have the opportunity to bring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to life in a brand new and original video game. This is one of the most enduring and beloved franchises in the world and we're beyond excited to use our expertise to expand the Turtles' global reach even further through the world of video games."

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is one of the most popular kids' franchises. Created in 1984, the franchise now consists of comic books, animated and live-action TV shows, and blockbuster films. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem offered one of the boldest artistic visions and interpretations of the franchise and it seemed to pay off as the film was a critical and commercial success. It's currently rated a 97% on Rotten Tomatoes with a 90% Audience Score. The film earned $153 million worldwide against just a $70 million budget.

While a sequel movie and 2D animated series have already been greenlit, it sounds like this video game will come first. No specific release date has been announced, but the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem game has a 2024 release window for consoles and PC. All we have is the concept art for the game, which you can check out above.

So tmnt high school dating simulator? I'm only down if it turns out like doki doki literature club.

But in seriousness, there simply can't be much of a story here. The turtles weren't really heroes before the events of the movie. And after there's no real incentive for them to go out and fight crime. In fact with them in high school, it's actually kind of getting in the way.

Canon wise it feels like this type of sequel video games are often pointless. The next movie will almost certainly ignore it and do whatever it needs to so it can tell the best story. There will be a section of fans who love it and a section of fans who feel what the sequel will do will be much better. Just feels like a weird choice. Could be wrong though.

@BobGarlen - I still remember the Spiderman games had a similar problem. They'd have villains not in the films, but they kept f@#$ing up their Canon.

In the raimi games, they'd just randomly include new versions of the villains even though there were other versions of them in earlier games (and they're clearly not the same). With the games in the amazing films, you'd have them jump the gun on a character like rhino and adapt him as a weird half rhino man instead of a guy in a hulkbuster suit like the movie did.

Copying the films art style could be cool, hope they do it justice!

I enjoyed the fighting and action but man did they change too much for me to like the story. Felt like they really took liberties with the back story, making the villain mutants good guys and I’m a bigger fan of April being a hot chick in a skin tight one piece kill bill suit.

Man, TMNT just keep coming and coming! It's insane how much was being done behind the scenes before the movie came out. The series Tales of the TMNT has wrapped up the pre-production and now there's a game coming out too! On top of that you have the TMNT the Last Ronin coming out, arcade DLC's, multiple toys, merch, comics etc. 2023 certainly is the biggest push of Ninja Turtles I have ever seen and it's amazing! Hats off to the people in charge of marketing and distribution cause they have really been doing an outstanding job for all us fans. Not so good for my wallet but I'm happy to take the plunge. Looking forward to seeing a trailer for this one day.
