The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles are coming back with a bang next yer. Not only is a new live action movie in the works, but Nickelodeon is airing a brand new animated series too. And EW have the skinny of who will be providing the voices for those lean green fighting machines..

Sean Astin (Lord of the Rings‘ Sam, The Goonies‘ Mikey, and Rudy‘s Rudy) will be voicing red-masked Raphael. He’ll be joined by a cast that includes Jason Biggs as Leonardo, Greg Cipes as Michelangelo, and Rob Paulsen as Donatello. The series will be executive produced by Ciro Nieli, Joshua Sternin and Jeffrey Ventimilia, and is currently set to debut in Fall 2012, although select fans can get an exclusive first look at the reimagined Turtles at the upcoming San Diego Comic-Con.

Interestingly, Paulsen voiced Raphael in the original cartoon. EW also have an interview with Astin, here are some excerpts..

ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY: Raphael has typically been portrayed as the grumpiest Turtle. Is that still true in the new series?

SEAN ASTIN: Do you mean to say the coolest?

Well, he was explicitly “cool, but rude” in the original cartoon. Is he still rude?

He’s still working through issues. He’s really good at what he does, and he doesn’t suffer fools lightly. Sometimes that arrogance can get him in a little bit of trouble.

You’re obviously a little biased, but is he your favorite Ninja Turtle?
He’s everybody‘s favorite Ninja Turtle. Raphael’s the coolest, no question about it. Ask anybody.

Hmmm, I dunno, I know a lot of people who think Michelangelo is the coolest. He’s the party dude!

Yeah, if you like that sort of thing. [Laughs] But Raphael is Raphael, you know what I mean? Everyone tells me, “Raphael! He’s the red one with the sai?” Everybody knows the Turtles by their identifying characteristic, which I just think is hilarious.

Astin also reveals that this incarnation of the Turtles might be a little less surfer dude than previous ones..

I don’t know if it’s that far. I don’t think it’s [adopts a perfect 'Bill and Ted' impression] “Dude, how you doin’, dude!” It’s just not quite as intense. A little bit more refined. They’ve got a slightly better education, maybe. More refined chemicals.

Sam the Hobbit as the surly, rage-fuelled sai-wielder with a thick NY accent? Don't see it.

I wonder if they will voice the live action reboot because they are Hollywood stars. So why cast other actor for the voices. Love it can't wait

I have loved TMNT from day one. I just hope that this cartoon reflects more on the original one than on any of the spinoffs that seemed to veer away from how fun the show really was in the beginning. I want to have a reason for my kids to play with my TMNT figures.

hmm. seems like a decent cast.

@Jackson, I like Seth Rogen, but his voice is a little too deep for a teenager IMO.

Hopefully this is good, all the recent TMNT cartoons were garbage. Probably will be terrible too. I am really pumped for the new IDW comic series tho.

seriously? ugh thats the lamest news yet. i had no idea they were doing another animated series. and of course it has to be on nickelodeon so it most likely will be lame, and on top of that voiced by 2 douchebags? sean astin as raph? what the hell? and jason friggin biggs as leonardo that totally sucks, leonardo is my favorite always has been even tho in the movies they made him lame for some reason. i hope the new movie has no connection to this cartoon, we need a dark gritty turtles like the original comics not like the last TMNT movie. man TMNT is like one of my favorite things of all time and they just keep ruining them.
odie00
odie00 - 6/15/2011, 12:42 AM
oh and to anyone who thinks raph would win in a fight against leo is high, thats BS. raph was cool in the original comics they all were and even in 80s cartoon. but then once they made the movies they made him a whiny little punk. Granted in the movies they do show raph a better fighter over all the rest. leo is really lame in the movies i wont lie there but you gotta go with the original source. there is a reason he is the Leader because hes the best out of the 4. the 2003 cartoon was alright, even tho i liked the 80s version better because i grew up with it, the 2003 cartoon is very close to the original comics, and in that leo is a beast. raph is definitely over rated, i always thought a lot of people liked mikey but there are more raph fans apparently
