THQ Nordic has officially unveiled TMNT: The Last Ronin, a video game based on the popular comic book mini-series from TMNT co-creators Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. Although we've technically known this game was in development since earlier this year, it feels more real now that we've actually gotten a teaser trailer.
Unfortunately, the teaser doesn't show much -- just a bit of imagery that encapsulates the dark and gritty tone of the comic that it is based on.
"Who is the Last Ronin? In a future, battle-ravaged New York City, a lone surviving Turtle embarks on a seemingly hopeless mission seeking justice for the family he lost," the description reads.
TMNT: The Last Ronin is being developed by Black Forest Games, a studio well-known for its remakes of Destroy All Humans and Destroy All Humans! 2. Although the teaser doesn't offer us much in terms of details, a previous interview between Polygon and Doug Rosen, senior vice president for games and emerging media at Paramount Global, the rights holders for Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, shed some light on what we can expect.
TMNT: The Last Ronin has been described as a third-person action role-playing game, and likened to Sony's hit God of War franchise. While many TMNT adaptations are often geared toward younger audiences, The Last Ronin, like the original source material, will be targeting a more mature audience.
For those unfamiliar with the comics, The Last Ronin is a dark and gritty, futuristic story about the Ninja Turtles. It's set in a grim future where New York City has been ravaged by battle, and all but one of the Turtles have been killed by the Foot Clan. The lone survivor -- whose identity remains a mystery until the final pages of the first issue -- sets off on a mission to avenge the deaths of his family and kill the grandson of Shredder.
TMNT: The Last Ronin appears to be in early development and is still a few years away from release, according to Rosen. But with the release of TMNT: Mutant Mayhem in theaters and the recent announcement IDW's sequel comic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin II - Re-Evolution, now is as good a time as any to announce a game based on one of the most popular stories in the Turtles' franchise history.
Although we don't have a release date, TMNT: The Last Ronin will be available on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
