THE CROW Director Alex Proyas Mocks Rupert Sanders' Upcoming Reboot: "Eric Draven's Having A Bad Hair Day!"

The response to our first look at The Crow remake has split opinions, and the director behind 1994's classic effort has gone all in on mocking Rupert Sanders and Bill Skarsgård's take on the character.

Earlier this week, we finally got a first look at June's remake of The Crow. Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) directs the movie which Bill Skarsgård leads as Eric Draven and FKA Twigs as his soon-to-be-murdered girlfriend Shelly.

The response to Skarsgård's transformation into The Crow has been mixed, if not downright negative. Unflattering comparisons have been made to Jared Leto's Joker in 2016's Suicide Squad (he really is just missing "Damaged" on his forehead) and many fans are questioning why Sanders made such a huge change to the character's classic appearance.

Well, director Alex Proyas - who helmed the 1994 movie starring the late Brandon Lee - has chimed in and he's similarly unimpressed.

As we first reported on FearHQ.com, he shared a still from The Crow remake and captioned it with, "Eric Draven's having a bad hair day. Next reboot thanks." In the comments section, he followed those remarks up with, "I guess he's supposed to be a bad mofo with all those tats and werewolves and skulls on his jacket."

The filmmaker even poked fun at Eric's drink of choice when he said, "Samuel Adams! Jesus! He could at least drink something more bad-ass."

Proyas has long been one of the reboot's biggest detractors and said several years ago that he believes doing so does Lee a disservice. "The Crow would not be a movie worth 'remaking' if it wasn’t for Brandon Lee," he said. "If it wasn’t for Brandon you may never have even heard of this poignant little underground comic. It is Brandon’s movie."

"I believe it is a special case where Hollywood should just let it remain a testament to a man’s immense talent and ultimate sacrifice - and not have others re-write that story or add to it. I know sequels were made, and TV shows, and what have you, but the notion of 'rebooting' this story, and the original character - a character Brandon gave life to at too high a cost – seems wrong to me."

The movie is fast approaching but with similar sentiments shared by fans, the odds are going to be stacked against it.

Soulmates Eric Draven (Bill Skarsgård) and Shelly Webster (FKA Twigs) are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself, Eric sets out to seek merciless revenge on their killers, traversing the worlds of the living and the dead to put the wrong things right.

The Crow is set to be released in theaters on June 7.

The Crow is an iconic piece of Goth culture and these mfrs turned him into a mumble rapper.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - yup. just when you think hollywood couldn't be any dumber, we get this.
I sorta get why these idiots do this sh1t (not defending, btw). The creators are artsy people. Being a musician, and you add theater people and actual artist; they just think on a different airwave. Unfortunately, a majority of those people don't know how to walk the line between personal expression and what the world will accept. This crap is beyond unacceptable.

@URCOMMENTSUCKS - I can accept crow having different hair style and tattoos but Eric draven no chance this looks like different variation of the crow books I bought female crow , Japanese yakuza crow, keep characters look same that’s what comic movies do this looks nothing like Eric draven

Proyas is spitting hot fire. And correct.

People keep bitching it’s a remake of the movie, bad or good, it’s just another adaption of the comic. Just how we have so many Batman movies and none are remakes of each other, just adaptions.

@valmic - for real… if the handful of shitty sequels and crappy merch aren’t ruining Lees legacy than the reboot certainly won’t. And while the comic wasn’t Spider-Man it certainly wasn’t as unknown as Proyas seems to think or it would never have been worth the investment to turn into a movie to begin with.

@valmic - true, but I do get where Proyas is coming from. If it wasn't for the first adaptation, the second never would've been made as no one would've known about the comic in the first place

@bkmeijer1 - Honestly, there was a mediocre 2nd film that hit theaters and at least 1, maybe 2, direct to video films that make my uncleaned toilet look like a royal throne. Oh, TV series too. Sucked.

@lazlodaytona - was Proyas involved with those? I think his argument goes there as well regardless though, even though those were ''connected'' to the movie

@bkmeijer1 - I don't believe he was. too lazy to google it right now.

@valmic - The names Eric Draven and Shelly Webster come directly from the movie. In the comic they were just Eric and Shelly.

@lazlodaytona - same here. I know the cast didn't return, so I'm kinda assuming the crew didn't either

He should have very little to say about the reboot considering that he couldn’t even guarantee the safety of his lead actor while filming.

@Origame - @dracula- that dude was running the show. He had the power to add and remove personnel as he saw fit. He was definitely in charge.

@SuperiorHeckler - with all the reboots, remakes, remasters and remixes nowadays, I wouldn't be surprised if that was the case.

I'm not against adaptations, but some things should be left alone. Especially if it already got adapted once.

I’m somewhat mixed on the look (don’t mind the short hair though some of the tats are a bit much) but the cast & recent interview with the director has me hopeful for the most part!!.

Also while Proyas has made some enjoyable movies in the past , dude shouldn’t be making fun of anything considering he gave us this also…

It literally looks like one of the straight to home video sequels. Was on the Bloody Disgusting facebook page the other day when the pic dropped. The horror geeks were freaking out at a couple of people who said they didn’t like the look. Essentially saying you’re only allowed to post praise. Never realized how fragile the horror community is.
