The Greatest American Hero will not be returning to your small screens this fall as ABC has officially passed on the pilot.

ABC's decision is one of the more surprising passes this year as many television pundits had expected the Nahnatchka Khan-produced project to be an almost sure thing, especially after they managed to land one of this pilot season's most heavily sought out actresses in Hannah Simone (New Girl).

The basic premise of the 30-minute half-hour comedy would have followed Meera, a 30-year-old woman from Cleveland, whose talents include drinking tequila, singing karaoke and not much else. All that changes when some aliens entrust her with a super suit protect the planet.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that their sources have said that the network felt the single-camera comedy felt a little "off-brand" for the Disney-owned network and instead opted for what they describe as more traditional family comedies like The Kids Are All Right and Single Parents, which is somewhat interesting to say the least. They did, however, stay in business with Khan and renewed Fresh Off The Boat for a fifth season.

Simone actually broke the news herself on Twitter and expressed her immense disappointment.

@noahthegrand - yep, driving in Detroit is like a combination of Escape from New York and Road Warrior. And it’s a daily guess which building will become abandoned next.

Well that is unfortunate, though I don't think they passed it because their lead would be a woman of color. Quantico says hi and it lasted for 3 Seasons starring Priyanka Chopra.

Man, why did she have to make it about race and gender? Not to say that it isn't the case, but I highly doubt that race and/or gender had anything to do with the show not getting picked up.

Did they really try to play the race card on this?!

Believe it or not, TV networks are jerks,
What else can you expect them to be-hee-hee?
They dropped the ball, on such cowardly terms,
Why could that be?
Believe it or not, they’re just jerks.

I was looking forward to it...I loved the old TV show with William Katt. So now let’s make it into a feature film with Justin Timberlake in the role.

FORGET ABOUT A DECENT STORY, INTERESTING CHARACTERS OR A PROMISING ORIGINAL VISION FOR A SERIES!!! IF IT'S A BROWN FEMALE SUPERHERO, IT DESERVES TO BE AUTOMATICALLY GREENLIT AND HAVE TWICE THE BUDGET OF GAME OF THRONES!

The old show was ridiculous. And yes, as a kid, I probably saw every single episode. Multiple times. There wasn't much to do in the early eighties.

Okay, I didn't even realize she has a bit of some non-white ethnicity in her. Nor did I care. But, that's me. I tend not to. Honestly.. I might have watched this show just to see her in the suit. :D
