SYFY to AIR The Greatest American Hero Marathon This 4th of July!

For those of us old enough to remember The Greatest American Hero, this July 4th will offer the opportunity to revisit our childhood.

If you have never seen The Greatest American Hero, it is a funny look in to the life of a man who is given an incredibly powerful superhero alien suit. There is only one problem, he loses the instructions and never figures out how to make it do anything that he wants it to do. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. It is worth watching to see what could have happened if Superman had no idea what he was doing.

I am going to tune in to at least one or two episodes to see if it is as funny as I remember and to see if it still holds up to what my childhood eyes made it out to be. I have not seen this in almost 30 years.

Below is a portion of the official press release from SYFY...

SYFY TO PRESENT THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO MARATHON ON SUNDAY, JULY 4, FROM 9AM-5AM

New York, NY - June 1, 2010 - Syfy celebrates America's birthday with a 20-hour July 4th marathon of the cult classic The Greatest American Hero, which hasn't been seen on national television since its original network run in 1983. The holiday celebration airs Sunday, July 4, from 9AM-5AM (ET/PT).

Featuring a most unlikely superhero, The Greatest American Hero aired from 1981-83, starring William Katt, Robert Culp and Connie Selleca.

Katt portrayed Ralph Hinkley, a young high school teacher in Los Angeles who is set upon by extra-terrestrials while on a field trip in the desert. The aliens give him an incredible red flying suit with unknown powers - unfortunately Ralph loses the instruction book. Culp plays a neurotic FBI agent who persuades Ralph to use his new powers to fight crime. Selleca is Ralph's girlfriend, an attorney.

I always liked the show as a kid, but I'm sure it looks very dated these days. You can watch it on NETFLIX as well.

Matches: There is going to be a huge crowd of family and friends at my house for the all day 4th of July celebration, smoking and grilling 3 pigs. This is going to start arround 6 or 7 in the morning. I am still going to find time to check out some of these episodes that I have not seen since I was a kid.

Don't feel bad. =}

I liked this show as a kid, it gave people something to look forward to, besides the everyday grind. All the things people have to do and see today, we didn't have back then. As stupid as it seemed, it was a great show!

Jac41: I remember those days well, and you know what was cool? We had like five channels back then (a sixth came on in the early 80's), but you could almost always find something really good on somewhere. Now I have several hundred channels, and a lot of the time, I can find nothing on I want to watch.

As for the Greatest American Hero, I remember this show, and none too fondly, if I may be honest. After a couple of episodes or so, it got to be Jar Jar-like annoying to me. Okay, we get the joke. This guy has this amazing suit that can do all these cool things, but he doesn't know how to use it. I watched it for a few weeks hoping it would get better, but it didn't. And I was only like 15 or 16 at the time, and infinitely more forgiving of shows than I am today. On top of that was the lame theme song, which was just all over the radio for several months, and never really went away.I never liked it then, and time hasn't changed that.

Hey, for those of you who were around that did enjoy it, more power to you. I was there and I didn't like it.
