From 1981 to 1983, ABC ran a superhero television series called The Greatest American Hero. It starred William Katt as Ralph Hinkley/Hanley, Robert Culp as Bill Maxwell and Connie Sellecca as Pam Davidson. While it only lasted a few seasons, its rerun have persevered over the past decades. It is considered a cult classic.

Believe it or not, Fox is gonna take another stab at this premise. The creators of The LEGO Movie, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, will be the executive producers of the project. The show will be an hour-long and "will chronicle inner-city teacher Isaac’s adventures after his discovery of a superhero suit which gives him superhuman abilities." Furthermore,  "Unfortunately for Isaac, he hates wearing the suit, and has to learn how to use its powers by trial and error because he quickly misplaces the suit’s instructions." Isaac will even have his own "government handler" just as the original series had. His main struggles will be "whether he should use his newfound gifts to help others or just himself."

THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO - Ralph Hinkley (William Katt) is an ordinary school teacher who becomes extraordinary after an encounter with extraterrestrials leaves him with a power suit that transforms him into a superhero! But when he loses the suit's instruction manual, Ralph must learn by trial and error to control the capabilities and powers of his red magic outfit to fight the battle against injustice and crime. Created by legendary writer/producer Stephen J. Cannell, this complete first season collection includes all 8 acclaimed episodes from this multi-Emmy nominated series which co-stars Michael Pare and Faye Grant.

I loved this show as a kid. Went back and rewatched it a few years ago, and it was almost painful. Still, I'd love to see an updated, modern version of the show. I know Nathan Fillion had expressed a desire to do a big screen adaptation a few years back, before Steven J. Cannell died.

It was always funny when he would try to fly and then like go out of control for a minute and start screaming and flailing his arms.

When I was 6 years old this was the only tv show my parents let me stay up late to watch. What a classic 80's show. I remember waiting for that moment in every episode where Ralph would crash into a billboard or a wall. The F/X were pretty lame even for the 80's, but the comedy was priceless. Katt had the most ridiculous hair back then. He was great in HOUSE, another one of my 80s favs.
