How Are You Showing Your Patriotism This Christmas?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays Everybody! In America, Christmas is that special time of the year when thousands of families go to the movies to watch whatever is there. So my question is...how are you going to show that YOU are a true American? PS: I know that everybody on CBM isn't American.

Editorial Opinion
By DannRamm113 - Dec 25, 2014 08:12 AM EST

There are dozens of options of what to watch today.  However, with all this controversy surounding "The Interview", I am wondering how you, my fellow CBMer is planing to spend the holidays.  Canceling "The Interview" was considered a loss in the first battle of the international "Cyber Wars".  But now it's being released in limited theaters, google play, and youtube movies (and torrent sites if you're into that sort of thing).  So, how are you going to show that you are an AMERICAN!?

The Interview

By watching this movie, some people may believe that they are giving a giant "F. U." to North Korea.  I watched it last night, and I have to say, while it is funny, it did not deserve that much publicity.  Albiet, it wasn't good publicity, but then again, any publicity is good publicity.  So, now people around America can go into a theater that is showing the movie, or rent it for $4.99/$5.99 online.  What better way to show that you are an American than by seeing the movie that communisim hates?

American Sniper

The movie has the word "American" in it.  It is directed by Clint Eastwood.  It stars Bradley Cooper as a soldier.  And it has an American Flag on the poster.  This movie screams America.  It is one of the best reviewed films of the season, so I wouldn't blame you for showing your patriotism by watching this movie!

Annie

The movie based on the musical set during the Great Depression about the American Dream. This movie is a remake of an American classic, with a modern update of course.  Why not watch orphans get their American Dream on the day that is all about giving?

Into The Woods

What's more American than Mickey Mouse??  This Disney movie is a great way to spend the holidays with the kids.  It is the best reviewed movie of the season, and is based on stories.  It is the second musical coming out today, after Annie, so if you want to relive the old days and watch a Disney musical, this movie is for you!

Now, of course you have many more options than these. There are many movies coming out today, but as long as you are enjoying your holiday, you are doing Christmas right.  Hell, you could watch "24 Hours of A Christmas Story" all day, as long as you are happy, I am happy.  So, Happy Holidays, and click on the red thumb if you enjoyed the read!

I hope the interview bombs. I am so sick of the freedom of speech argument. Yes we have freedom of speech, but not freedom from consequences.

Freedom of speech, even if what you say is stupid. Yeah, let's defend stupidity because in america stupidity rains supreme.

Damn, you mad? Maybe you like the idea of a brutal dictator deciding what we can and can't watch from across the world. Also seems like you agree with censorship if you don't like the entertainment that is being called into question.

@Sting

That's fine! Just don't get too excited during the Volleyball scene though!

@Hobo I am annoyed people are trying to make a movie about freedom of speech, a stupid movie at that. Lol, censorship, Sony is still releasing it, they didn't lose sh!t. You want to watch this dumb movie than go for it, just don't try to make it about freedom of speech, that's a joke.

Do I agree with censorship, no, but I do believe in consequences. For Sony to play victim is crap, they knew this would upset North Korea, did they care? Why should we care?, cause America says they are infringing on their freedom of speech. Who is the sheep following the heard? Yes we can say what we want but there are consequences, to think you are bigger than that is stupid.

Like I said, make shift patriots all over. Let's jump on the bandwagon, poor Sony, you have to deal with reality like us all, so not fair to Sony.

Excuse me for not drinking the kool-aid the rest of the "patriots" are drinking.

Just cause you dress it up in red, white and blue makes it right.

I saw Annie last weekend and was pretty good. Kept close enough to the previous adaptions to give you that nostalgia feel but didn't stick so close that it didn't have it's own style. Music was great, and the comedy was pretty funny in my opinion.

Also that kid who played Annie was fantastic, she was an amazing lead.

@MileHigh- You DO know that movies that mock world leaders are made all the time right? How would it be obvious that Un would go apeshit like this over a movie?

Hell, the UK put out a movie about the assassination of Bush WHILE Bush was president. No one flipped a tit over that.

and it's not like North Korea hasn't been the target of a joke before, with Team America: World Police about Uns father while HE was leader.

JokerFanHAhaHA
JokerFanHAhaHA - 12/25/2014, 11:59 AM
and yes, it IS a freedom of expression issue. We do not let Dictators of foreign countries determine what we are free to watch OR create.

No one is safe from criticism or mockery. To think any different is ridiculous.

MileHighRonin - 12/25/2014, 12:06 PM
@joker lol, so you are telling me Sony truly believed Un would be ok with this? I am not defending Un, but the rest of the world knew he was crazy, but Sony didn't? Bull.
MileHighRonin
MileHighRonin - 12/25/2014, 12:10 PM
@joker that is the issue. Yes you have freedom of speech, but not from the consequences of your speech. Sony is no different than somebody voicing their opinion. If people don't like what we say, as many do with me right now, they will let me know they disagree and some attack me. That is the consequence to my freedom of speech. Fredom of speech is not free.

I agree with everything you are saying. This faux patriotism is quite misguided and shows a misunderstanding of 'Freedom' means. Just because we are free to do and say whatever want ...it doesn't mean we SHOULD. The fact remains is that the country's safety was in question with that issue as their were bombing threats. Are we THAT ignorant to believe that pulling the movie because a dictator who has nuclear capabilities threatens its citizens is 'forfeiting our freedom.' It isn't, it is protecting the American public from a terrorist attack so we can continue to enjoy that freedom. It is serving the greater good.

Imagine if bombings and attacks DID occur, what would be YOUR reaction? Seeing that the public was consciously aware of the threat and had forewarning, who would we blame? Our attitudes would flip towards Sony for being 'so stubborn' and putting the country's safety in danger. We would blame them and probably Obama. Sure, UN would be the guy who attacked us, but Sony would be the ones with all of the blame cast on them.

In the end, human life and the country's safety is more important and MUCH bigger than a movie.

If we were bombed, it's still NK's fault, not sony's. If I date a dude's ex girl friend and he shows up and shoots me, is it my fault I got shot, or is it the crazy ex who actually shot me's fault.

Lmfao, just cause you use the flag as your argument does not make you a patriot, what a joke. The world does not revolve around america, the rest of the world does not need to follow our laws or constitutional rights. Sony choose to not show the film, they realized actions have consequences. No one is above that.

Call me, and others who don't blindly follow, whatever you want. Call us names, call is whatever. You have that right, but it doesn't mean you are right, same to me.

You guys go ahead and follow the masses, american government says Sony is a victim, therefore it must be true.

Lol, yeah, because I said freedom is dumb.
Patriotism for the sake of loving where you're from is dumb. America is not the only free country. I do live here because I'm free, but that does not mean I couldn't go somewhere else if I felt my freedom was compromised. In this case, in no way did I feel my freedom was at risk.

JokerFanHAhaHA - 12/25/2014, 7:16 PM
@MileHigh- Except you ARE siding with Un on this. You call it a 'consequence' as if it's somehow justified to make terrorist threats because someone made a joke about you.

So just because someone threatens you with violence, you should listen to every demand?

What if when other demands come in? What if other nations decide 'Hey, we don't like how WE'RE portrayed in Hollywood movies!"? Will they now make threats to get us to cancel satire aimed towards THEM?

and what if it stops being just about fiction? What about dictators and warlords who decide they don't like how the news media talks about them? Will we put our heads in the sand then? Ignore atrocities around the world because we're too scared of atrocities happening to US?

When you give in to a bully, it sends a big message to every bully. It sends the message that threats work, and that we will fold.

This country and the people in it claim to stand UP towards tyranny, and yet here people are on the internet claiming we should give in to it.

This isn't about patriotism for me. This is about not giving in to bullies, and letting another country's Government tell me what I can and cannot watch, read, and enjoy. We're not living in North Korea. We will not be ordered around by North Korea.

yonny616 - 12/25/2014, 7:51 PM
@MileHighRonin No one is saying the world revolves around America. No one is saying the world has to follow our laws or constitution. What we're saying is we have the right to make a movie like this and release it to the public. We've made movies where our president is attacked and sometimes even killed. We've made movies about other countries leaders, cultures, so forth and so on. We have right to say what we feel. To express that in voice or in an art form. Some other country can not tell us we don't have that right because they got butthurt there's a comedy making fun of them. There's consequences to freedom. People have died for these freedoms. That's a consequence of keeping these freedoms. You don't have to watch the film if you don't want to. My friends and I want to and many others in this country. You know why? Because we as AMERICANS can.
MileHighRonin
MileHighRonin - 12/25/2014, 8:42 PM
@Joker of course you think I am siding with him, I don't have your opinion and therefore I am siding with the "enemy". When did I say allow a dictator to decide what should be shown?, you seem to assume a lot. I have been saying Sony is no victim, and their freedom of speech is not being infringed on, the movie got more press and is still getting released. Sony is no victim, they knew North Korea would react ignorantly and irrationally. Sony made their choice and I don't feel sorry for them, they are not a victim. They were just arrogant enough to think that a nut job with an entire military force behind would Just shrug it off. Just cause we don't see it as a big deal means they do too, and yes their view point matters when they have nuclear capabilities. Honestly, if North Korea attacked us, people would be pissed if it could have been prevented. This issue is bigger than our freedom Of speech or freedom to enjoy a film, it's about keeping global peace. Yes I agree On is overreacting, but the reality is he is nuts and pushing the buttons of a nut usually ends bad.

@yonna i don't care if you or anybody else wants to watch it, it's your time and money. Just don't make it about our freedom of speech, Sony is not fighting for our rights or changing the nations laws. They are making a big buck and somehow are the victim. They knew what they were doing, and they didn't care, cause this is about money and not our rights.

Sony Is not a victim, and On is not a victim. Both parties are stupid, On is stupid with a military force. Should we back down from this?, yes if it means preventing a senseless war. Would you guys be ok with going to war over a film?, any film? There are some things that are bigger than us, whether we agree or disagree with them.

@dannramm113 I apologize for turning your article into debate class, this will be my last post on this article. It's a very good article, American Shooter looks very interesting. Into the Woods looks fun. Annie, not a fan of the original, didn't suck just not my cup of tea. I really am looking forward for Unbroken, a little hesitant once I heard jolie directed it. It still looks very good.
yonny616
yonny616 - 12/25/2014, 9:28 PM
@MileHighRonin Then why is it so important for you? Who the hell said Sony was fighting for our rights? WE, the people that want to see the film, are the ones fighting for our right to see the film. Them giving in would have caused a ripple effect across the film industry, maybe into other media. Hell it already has. Steve Carrell's North Korea comedy was canned because of this and Team America, a film that makes fun of North Korea, was not allowed to be screened as replacement for The Interview when it got pulled from theaters. Yes, they knew. Of course they knew what they were doing. They just didn't expect this big of a response over a SETH ROGEN comedy! They're a business, it's never about anything else except money.

When people say Sony was the victim, they're talking about the employee working at Sony. Not just the brand. Sony was hacked, people had their private information such as social security numbers leaked. Along with private company documents and emails that put that person and company in a bad light. So yes, in a sense, they are the victims. Should we surrender our freedoms that many have fought and died for because some asshole got his feelings hurt?

Ok, it's people like @MileHighRobin who will allow all of our constitutional freedoms to disappear. So, according to your argument, the people who made the movie "Selma" should have known that it would upset the KKK and other racists, and so it would be perfectly ok for those groups to hack that movie company and threaten theaters. Whether you want to admit it or not, that's what you're saying. You can't have freedom of speech for some and then take it away for others, or allow people who are offended to attempt to take it away from others, because if you do, eventually no one will have freedom of speech because everyone is offended by something. Now I have no doubt that The Interview is probably an incredibly dumb movie. But if we don't defend the dumb ones, we'll only encourage those who would try to stop the great ones.

Patriotism actually has some big negative aspects to its meaning in Dutch. Probably to do with the constant bickering we used to have between the Republicans and the Orangists (those who support the Monarchy).

The danger of patriotism is the same danger of belief in any kind of superiority of self. It stifles debate and leads to war. Whether its a belief in religion, social ideas, nationalism or whatever is all the same. "I am better than you, so nothing you say matters" can only end in tears.

Its a tool lovingly used by governments to get its subjects to shut up and listen and pay taxes and die for them.
