BOX OFFICE: THE LONE RANGER Opens With $2M In Tuesday Night Showings
With a $65-70M five-day opening being predicted, Disney's The Lone Ranger has opened with $2M in late night showings on Tuesday. However, the action western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will be no match for Despicable Me 2 this week.
The Lone Ranger hasn't exactly been well received by critics, as Disney's $250M action western currently has a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 108 reviews. However, the Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer starrer will still do decent business this week, and opened last night with $2M. Its main competition, Universal's Despicable Me 2, grossed an impressive $4.7M. The animated sequel is on track for a $110M gross by Sunday, with Lone Ranger predicted to make $65-70M. That's a decent opening for the Gore Verbinski-directed blockbuster (which many have predicted would be one of the biggest box office disappointments of the year), but it will have to do very well overseas and have strong legs domestically to cover its massive budget. Disney is hoping to create a potential franchise after previously working with Depp, Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the multi-billion Pirates Of The Caribbean series. What do you plan on seeing this weekend?
