BOX OFFICE: THE LONE RANGER Opens With $2M In Tuesday Night Showings

With a $65-70M five-day opening being predicted, Disney's The Lone Ranger has opened with $2M in late night showings on Tuesday. However, the action western starring Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will be no match for Despicable Me 2 this week.

The Lone Ranger hasn't exactly been well received by critics, as Disney's $250M action western currently has a 24% rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 108 reviews. However, the Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer starrer will still do decent business this week, and opened last night with $2M. Its main competition, Universal's Despicable Me 2, grossed an impressive $4.7M. The animated sequel is on track for a $110M gross by Sunday, with Lone Ranger predicted to make $65-70M. That's a decent opening for the Gore Verbinski-directed blockbuster (which many have predicted would be one of the biggest box office disappointments of the year), but it will have to do very well overseas and have strong legs domestically to cover its massive budget. Disney is hoping to create a potential franchise after previously working with Depp, Verbinski and producer Jerry Bruckheimer on the multi-billion Pirates Of The Caribbean series. What do you plan on seeing this weekend?

Well that was poor planning on Disney's part. Despicable Me 2 is going to kill them in the BO this week. Ranger will have to rely on the older teen crowds...and adults w/o kids who still dig westerns. And what I've seen not a very good western.

@OdinStomp, Unlike The Lone Ranger MOS was actually really good and the GA love it with 82% user Rating. As for The Lone Ranger it sets at 73% with user liking it. WOM for The Lone Ranger doesn't look good and will not have MOS WOM to earn any BO money.

incredible how no one seems to factor in competition with release dates. skyfall opened in october last year but still earned over a billion over a 3 month run. its not all about cramming everything into summer people. if its a good movie and you manage to get a week to yourself then you have a hit. If you manage to get two weeks without top competition you have a really big hit. In addition to having good movie you need to have good release dates too as it helps almost as much.

I don't really see this doing so well honestly. But Disney certainly has money to burn. They could waste money on movies and not lose too much sleep over it.

You have seen the Lone Ranger?

@Mysterion

Financially it certainly seems that way at the moment. However, I actually liked John Carter. I thought it was very underrated.

John Carter ended with with 283 million worldwide...I could see Lone Ranger ending around that amount. What helped John Carter break even was the international box office...and Lone Ranger will do poorly overseas

No one cares about westerns outside of America, which is why they do far better in America. Django was a Tarantino film first before a western so that doesn't count. Lone Ranger will do crap overseas.

What was Disney thinking doing a Lone Ranger film?

Why would you want a franchise of such a shitty character?

And what did they think could be funny in a Lone Ranger film?

I don't get why Disney had to have this movie come out in the summer. I don't get why all studios for that matter only want to bring out movies in May, June & July. There is nine more months in the year. With having movies all coming out around the same time there will be less money they could have made. I could have seen that the Lone Ranger would have done better closer to the end of the year maybe around October.

John Carter was a great film. Poorly scored by 'critics' again, while teeny shite storms like the Hunger Games got great reviews. Proves critics are somewhat unreliable
