BOX OFFICE: Updates On PACIFIC RIM, THE WOLVERINE And ELYSIUM

The Wolverine has now earned $214.8M USD overseas, passing X-Men: First Class and making it the second highest grossing X-Men film after X-Men: The Last Stand. The Wolverine has earned $120.45M USD domestically, giving the film a global total of $335.25M USD on an estimated $120M USD production budget.

Pacific Rim has now officially earned more in China ($100.1M USD) than it has in the US ($98.4M USD). The film's international gross now totals $286M USD. Pacific Rim's global total now rests at $384.4M USD on an estimated $190M USD production budget. In regards to the low Japan box office numbers, Pacific Rim is only playing on ~550 movie screens, a low number, compared to the thousands of screens available in the US and China.

In its second weekend, Elysium dropped 54% to earn $13.6M USD domestically. It trails District 9's two week, domestic box office total by $17M USD. The film currently has a $93.6M USD global total on a $115M USD production budget. No cause for concern yet though as the the movie still has to premiere in quite a few foreign territories.

The Lone Ranger earned a tepid $7.6M USD overseas, bringing its global total to $215M USD. The film has finally matched its production budget.

Box office numbers DO NOT determine how good or bad a movie really is.
It tells how much money the movie has made..that is all.

Man of Steel made over 398M world wide in 11 days and the wolverine makes just under that 25 days yet there is not ONE post about it being a failure? Sure there is no Marvel biased on this site or any other. And don't give me the excuse about doubling or tripling your money as a factor to how good a movie is. Unless your a B-level character then you should be held to the same standard as other major tent pole movies.

Well, you know how it is round these here parts. Wolverines pitiful numbers are met with positivity, but Man of Steel's 650Mil is a failure because it's not a Billion.

MARVEL doesn't make sausages. So you don't have to guess what that is stuck in these dudes mouths.
MercwithMouth
MercwithMouth - 8/19/2013, 7:11 AM
@Neo

Man of Steel is a failure, simply because it is a horrible movie, about a boring, washed-up, old-fashioned boy scout hero. Superman is no fun, he's the Ned Flanders of the superhero genre.

The Wolverine is a success not because of numbers, but because it is finally the movie that sets the Wolverine character on the right path. It's a good start for Fox's shared universe.

Yes, I am biased to MARVEL, for the simple reason that I like the characters better, and the stories better. Give me Wolvie, Spiderman, and the Avengers over Batman, Superman, and ... do they have other characters??? lol, I kid DC because they are DC.

The bars are at different heights when talking Superman vs Wolverine

Plus you're condensing the argument because it usually has to take into perspective the budgets and marketing costs.

@tr8cthis- The Wolverine only cost 120 mil to produce and has made 335 mil in 4 weeks of release which is 2.8 times its investment. MOS cost 225 mil according to IMDB and has made 648 mil after 10 weeks which is 2.9 times its investment. In terms of profit percentage, they are nearly identical.

The Wolverine and Elysium were definitely the best of these (don't know which I liked more). PR was pretty good too, but the lack of story, character development and the numerous plot holes just weakened its performance to me. I mean fighting giant monsters with giant robots is awesome and all, I just wanted a better explanation of how they got there and why they were using giant robots. To me it just seemed like they rushed thru the backstory to throw monsters fighting robots in our face. But don't get me wrong, I still enjoyed PR.

Nothing really surprising here for me. Lone Ranger strayed way too much from what the older generation grew up with for the trailers to be even remotely appealing to them.

ABLEE337@ you do realize that shrimp and prawns are two different types of crustacean. ;-)

McGee@ Cant agree with you on that. There are the good handful of DC trolls that rear their ugly heads at times as well. What many refer to as trolls nowadays on this site is a far cry from what we used to call trolls a few years ago. People here are way too sensitive and thin-skinned and will label someone a troll for having a strong opinion. Never used to be like it is now.
GhostKILLERgx7
GhostKILLERgx7 - 8/19/2013, 8:16 AM
the absent of knowledge is less than the experience of wisdom.....trolls will be trolls, but that doesn't mean they are right. as a matter of fact i can't even define what right is so where all just wrong till proven.

as for these films elysium hits home for me, pacific rim was a great stepping stone for a new genera of film and wolverine i haven't watched but im not going to. so there you have it.

GhostKILLERgx7 - 8/19/2013, 8:20 AM
what i find most funny is many marvel fans don't know how many of there favourite characters where born.....which company made hero comics first marvel or DC? and then judge by the numbers, because we all know both companies will bite off each other at times. who just recently rebooted, and who is trying too?
this talk about which company is no better than saying who's god's are better (the greek's or roman's? )<---- for anyone who can answer the question i'll give you a handshake

there is nothing wrong with going on a thread and throwing your 2-cents into the pile. just when people go say how "this is best" or "this sucks because of" what does it matter in the end? it's better when people can just voice there opinion and find like minded souls in which they can both gain new insight

McGee@ they show up plenty in the Marvel articles. Guess you have just missed them somehow. ;-)

GhostKILLERgx7@ I am a fan of both companies, but started out as more of a DC fan. I just haven't been near as happy with what DC has delivered film-wise, so there are those that may assume I am more of a Marvel fan, because I am vocal about my thoughts on their films. I am also vocal about my disappointment with Marvel films like TASM. Anyone who has followed comics knows there is lots of back and forth and anyone who knows mythology knows that the Greek and Roman Gods are basically the same, but just referred to by a different name, Zeus and Jupiter are one in the same..Hermes/Mercurcy...etc. ;-)

Yes I do know there is a difference between prawns and shrimps but I was just saying that Aussie don't call them shrimps or use that word usually. They refer to them as prawns. That's all.

My Aussie friends hate that line and kinda find it insulting. I think they feel like we are making fun of them when people say that to them.

But I don't eat either, I don't eat any shellfish or bottom feeders. To me, they are just big underwater bugs.

Some of y'all pretty pathetic , lol...... Just because man of steel didn't make a billion dollars doesn't mean it's bombed at the theaters, lol. It's a friggin origin story, I haven't seem any origin stories make a billion and second all the big blockbuster movies that came out this summer, it was one of the few that survived. I think the top 3 highest grossing movies domestic are 1. Iron man 3, 2. Despicable Me 2, 3. Man of Steel, so saying the movie bomb is obivously showing your a Marvel Troll.

Also everyone was saying The Wolverine was flopping now look!!! Lol, I told y'all that was a success.... Just because it didn't have a big opening doesn't mean it failed. Good flick though

Man of Steel takes crap because, as always, hardcore fans swore up and down how it was going to crush all competition and be the greatest thing to ever grace the screen for months before its release. Hell, even WB's execs were in on that, from a pre-release Variety article:

"Warner Bros. motion pictures group president Jeff Robinov went so far as to predict it will be the studio’s highest performer ever. That would mean the 3D movie, which cost about $225 million to produce and another $150 million to market and release around the globe, would have to top the $1.3 billion cume for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ and the $1 billion-plus each earned by four other Warner releases, “The Dark Knight,” “The Dark Knight Rises,” “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey” and “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King.”"

So when people talk a big game and set expectations so high, others are going to rub their noses in it when they don't reach them.

In the long term I think it will be a very good thing for the industry if some of these high-budget SFX heavy movies flop. There have been more than a few where decent script-writing has not been an issue for the film-makers. If the basics of the plot and dialogue are good enough the rest will fall into place. If the numbers are what it takes for film companies to do the right thing then so be it. The public are not as impressed by CGI as they used to be. Something else is needed.
marantaz
marantaz - 8/19/2013, 9:45 AM
Its good that these films are making money, we certainly don't want cbms and SF films doing bad, and these are American companies making these films so its all good. But when you get into the details, the movie execs have to decide if financial success is enough to go on. Clearly, in the case of Kick Ass, the answer should have been no, one is enough. With Wolverine, he's a franchise by himself, and a key player in another, and part of a bigger universe, both at Fox and Marvel, that Fox wants to keep alive, so yes, he gets to go on, but barely. They've got to commit to telling a story, and showing his rage in graphic detail, or he will begin to hurt their part of the Marvel universe.
With PR, it has to double its budget just to just break even, which it may have done now, though its actual budget is still not known, so if I were an exec, I'd be unlikely to approve a sequel.
Elysium doesn't deserve a sequel, nor does it need one. Like the political philosophy it propagandized, failure is inevitable.
As for the Lone Ranger, take off the mask, turn in the guns, shoot the horse and make Depp stand outside a cigar store, its stinking up the theatres worse than the dead bird on Depps head.
