Yesterday evening, DC Studios co-CEO James Gunn confirmed that a new Superman movie is in the works which will follow the Man of Steel during his early years in Metropolis.
As a result, Henry Cavill is no longer needed, and his time as Clark Kent has reached its end...just weeks after he told the world that he was back. It's a disappointing way for his nearly decade-long tenure as the iconic comic book character to conclude, especially as fans were starting to get very excited about another movie starring his Superman.
The actor's announcement came after a mid-credits cameo in Black Adam that appeared to be setting the stage for the two characters to come to blows down the line. Since then, and prior to DC Studios being formed, Cavill has also shot a cameo in The Flash, seemingly undoing past plans to write the hero out of the DCEU.
None of that matters now, of course, as the entire franchise is being rebooted. The DCU will offer this franchise a fresh start, hence why we're getting a new Superman.
We definitely have empathy for Cavill as he's been put through the wringer. However, don't lose too much sleep thinking about the actor because it's now been revealed that he earned a cool $250,000 for each of those cameos. Not bad when his screentime in both movies is no more than a few minutes, eh?
In the case of The Flash, we now have a description of his seemingly scrapped scene suggesting Barry Allen might have freed Superman from the Speed Force when he puts the timeline right after his trip back in time.
As disappointed as Cavill must be that his time as Superman has ended, we're sure $500,000 has made it an easier pill to swallow (and good for him for getting paid after Warner Bros. shelved his Man of Tomorrow for five years).
