BOX OFFICE: THOR: THE DARK WORLD Set For An Impressive $75 Million Opening

According to The Hollywood Reporter, tracking for Thor: The Dark World indicates that the superhero sequel will open with upwards of $75 million when it's released in North America on November 8th. That would easily exceed the $65.7 million earned by Thor in 2011, but will it come close to the worldwide total of £1.2 billion made by Iron Man 3 earlier this year? That's extremely unlikely according to analysts, but none of them ever imagined that Robert Downey Jr.'s third solo outing would ever come close to the figure mentioned above! Regardless, Thor: The Dark World is sparking interesting among all moviegoers, so there's no doubt that this will be yet another hit for Marvel Studios. How much do you guys think it will end up making?

Marvel’s "Thor: The Dark World" continues the big-screen adventures of Thor, the Mighty Avenger, as he battles to save Earth and all the Nine Realms from a shadowy enemy that predates the universe itself. In the aftermath of Marvel’s "Thor" and "Marvel’s The Avengers," Thor fights to restore order across the cosmos…but an ancient race led by the vengeful Malekith returns to plunge the universe back into darkness. Faced with an enemy that even Odin and Asgard cannot withstand, Thor must embark on his most perilous and personal journey yet, one that will reunite him with Jane Foster and force him to sacrifice everything to save us all.

STARRING:

Chris Hemsworth as Thor
Tom Hiddleston as Loki
Anthony Hopkins as Odin
Natalie Portman as Jane Foster
Zachary Levi as Fandral
Ray Stevenson as Volstagg
Tadanobu Asano as Hogun

I'm hoping for $85mm. Getting only a $10mm bump from Avengers would be a little disappointing.

Did Thor only make $268.3 mil ww? I'm sure I read somewhere that Thor took around $400 mil and Cap took around $350 mil????

That's if Endersgame is a flop! But if it's a huge hit it might carry over the following week and impact Thors 2 opening.

It's kinda sandwiched between Enders game and catching Fire! That's going to be an uphill battle for Thor.

Wow, that's quite a bit lower than I expected. Either way, I'm still not expecting it to make MoS money. Should do better internationally.

Lol, everyone said M.O.S was gonna crack the $1 billion mark for sure... look what happened :(.

Not hating, just saying that don't get your hopes too high for this movie cracking your estimates.

I'm just hoping for a decent movie, what it makes is irrelevant.

It will get nowhere near $700 million. Probably not even $500 million. Catching Fire will kill it.

Thor:TDW will make more than the first. That's as bold as I will get.

It would probably make around 600-700 million worldwide.

@James exactly. Should make at least $500 mill I'd say. People can say IM3 rode on the coat tails of Avengers all they want but don't forget RDJ has star power which draws fans as well.

I don't think it'll crack a billion but I think its going to get close to it. If the film gets pretty good word of mouth then maybe, but thats a big maybe.

@HugoStrange87

Yeah, star power had a huge play in IM3's success. The difference here is that while Hemsworth is definitely more popular, he isn't a big box office draw. His latest film Rush (which I really liked) has made about $70 million on a $38 million budget. By no means a failure, but not anything astounding considering the advertisements were going hard with the fact that they had Chris, even if he wasn't the title character. Hey, as long as Thor:TDW makes a little more than the first I'm fine because that guarantees more. Now it's just a matter of finding out if the film is worth it.

WE CBM FANS WILL HAVE TO DEAL WITH THE CATCHING FIRE CRAP AND WE NEED 3 OUT OF THE TOP 4 MOVIES OF THE YEAR TO BE CBM'S.

AS A MARVELITE (NOT A DC HATER) I WOULD LOVE TO SEE THE TOP 2 MOVIES BE FROM MARVEL STUDIOS.

THIS IS OUR SITE, AND OUR LIFE LONG DREAMS COME TRUE TO SEE THESE MOVIES AND HAVE THE REST OF THE WORLD ENJOY THEM WITH US. LETS MAKE THIS MOVE WIN BIG IN THE BOX OFFICE.

I think it will make more. My wife loves Thor she can care less about any other superhero movie except batman and Thor so I think they will get a good amount of women to help that number get to 85 million
JoJo1982
JoJo1982 - 10/17/2013, 2:43 PM
With all the hype for Ender's Game, Hunger Games 2, and Hobbit 2... I think Thor will make 600-700 million at the most worldwide

It's not going to reach Iron man 3 numbers
plus it has some big competition

Man of steel will make more its openeing weekend, but Thor TDW will make over 700 million in the box office. Think that's only 250 million more than the first film which isn't that hard. Good movie = 100 million more. Boost from the Avengers 100 million. Being a sequal = 50 million.

Opening $100M-$120M
Domestic total $285M
Int'l total $550M
Global total $835M

...if it's well reviewed. Otherwise, drop to $600M global

They're lowballing the estimate. Thor made 66million it's opening weekend. Since then Hemsworth and Hiddleston have become stars. People got on the all things Avengers bandwagon. Plus it looks awesome. I say 105 million opening weekend
