The THOR: LOVE AND THUNDER Poster Director Taika Waititi Claimed Was A Fake Is, In Fact, 100% Real

The plot has thickened with the "fake" Thor: Love and Thunder poster, because a merchandise company has confirmed that, despite director Taika Waititi's recent claims, it is 100% the real deal...

Over the weekend, a new Thor: Love and Thunder poster found its way online. Clearly made up of an assortment of promo art thrown together for the posters you often find for sale in your local Target, it was far from a masterpiece, but it did offer a new look at several major characters.

The poster included sneak peeks at the Mighty Thor and Valkyrie, not to mention the God of Thunder's new costume(s). It wasn't exactly a traditional theatrical poster - though Spider-Man: No Way Home has proved that they're not always what they're cracked up to be - but fans were still excited by the reveals. Unfortunately, the hype was dampened somewhat by a Tweet shared by director Taika Waititi:

Well, there's another twist in the tale today. The Direct reached out to merchandise supplier Pyramid International and confirmed that this Thor: Love and Thunder poster "is an officially licensed product from Marvel." The site adds that, according to Pyramid, "the poster was mistakenly distributed to a retailer too early and will be available for purchase in 2022." In other words, it's real.

It's possible Waititi hasn't given the extremely busy poster his approval or that he was trying to make sure fans are still surprised when the official first look at the movie lands. Either way, it would have probably been better to say nothing at all, as this feels a lot like Lucasfilm's claims that Solo: A Star Wars Story promo art was fake...only for it to be in every store on the planet months later!

Thor: Love and Thunder arrives in theaters on July 8, 2022.

“It's possible Waititi hasn't given the extremely busy poster his approval”

When it comes to general merchandising, most creatives involved will not have a say or have to approve anything. Based on the sound of things, this is likely one of those kinds of posters you can purchase at a Walmart. Someone at the merchandising side of things at Disney will have access to images they can use and just Photoshop everything together and call it day.

Or he just didn't know about it.

Me, I think it's Thor who's fake. I don't think he's real.

Why'd he have to call it bad though? Makes him come off as a drunken asshole once people find out its real and marvel hired actual professionals to work on it

Fake or not, I still think it’s pretty rude to laugh and call it bad as the director of said film. Hell if it were fake, to me it’s still pretty damn impressive. People that work on promo art for these films deserve some damn praise if you ask me

@McMurdo - Pretty sure he means that as a complement and not literally saying that it's "bad". It's a Kiwi thing I think.

I don’t think he meant that it was fake, he just said it wasn’t ‘official’, which is much more vague. It could have been a prototype from marketing that got leaked.

Alright I think we're at the point where Enough is Enough with the lies. I get wanting the audience to be surprised but we're in a digital age now & people CHOOSE to be online and look for leaks & stuff so the"online fans" will still be surprised. What im saying is these actors/ Directors/studios need to kill it with the lies and just let it be like the fans will still be here regardless of who's cast or what a poster for a movie looks like!

Isn't there a difference between merch art and theater art? Because if there is a difference (and I feel like there is) then BOTH parties could be right.
Killuminatic
Killuminatic - 12/13/2021, 4:39 PM
The director never claimed it was fake; just showed admiration and wished it was an official one to be used as the theatrical poster, rather than solely for other merchandising, which it clearly seemed to be for and has now been confirmed to be.

Yeah no way that was fan-made. Those designs are way too detailed and original/consistent for them to be photoshops. Fan-made posters don't put in this much effort.
