The revolution has begun!
Thor: Ragnarok opened in 52% of its overall international marketplace and judging by the numbers, Marvel shouldn't regret hiring Taika Waititi as the picture’s director. The movie debuted to thundering $107.6M from 36 international markets, becoming #1 in 35 (save for Italy). The biggest players didn’t disappoint, scoring $15.8M in UK, $15.5M in South Korea, $8.4M in Australia and $8.3M in Brazil.
$108M opening means that
Ragnarok actually overperfomed in these markets, as it was projected to earn $85M-$100M before its release in the UK. The threequel’s debuted 4% ahead of this may’s
Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 and 22% above
Doctor Strange which also opened on the edge of October/November last year. The movie also made $6M in IMAX alone.
Comparing it to the opening of
Thor: The Dark World,
Ragnarok is currently 34% above Alan Taylor’s movie, which is not really surprising considering that the threequel is a much more crowd-pleasing, joyful and colorful experience.
The pessimistic prediction follows
The Dark World which would give
Ragnarok $430M internationally, but it’s rather not possible given the critics’ high scores and the inclusion of the incredible Hulk. With a similar run to
Doctor Strange, we’re looking at $546M overseas total and a clear shot at topping $800M worldwide when it’s all said and done.
Thor: Ragnarok opens in North America, China and the rest of the markets this coming weekend.
