Just like J. Michael Straczynski and Olivier Coipel's Thor run heavily inspired the God of Thunder's early MCU adventures, it now appears Marvel Studios is mining Jason Aaron and Esad Ribic's work for Thor: Love and Thunder. It's a wise decision, and one that means we'll see both Jane Foster's Mighty Thor and Gorr the God Butcher in the upcoming Thor: Ragnarok sequel.
The villain will be played by former Batman Christian Bale, and while he's a little less alien in appearance than his comic book counterpart, this Gorr is arguably far more terrifying.
We'd go so far as to say that he looks like a horror movie villain, and as humorous as Thor: Love and Thunder looks on the surface, we have a feeling things will get really dark when Gorr shows up. Just like what we saw on the page, this powerful villain is looking to kill every God in existence, and that's going to result in both Thors being pushed to their limits.
It's unclear whether Chris Hemsworth intends to continue playing Thor (alongside Mark Ruffalo's Hulk and Jeremy Renner's Hawkeye, he's the final "original" Avenger standing). We certainly hope so, but you can bet your life that the hero will come out of this adventure completely changed.
Directed by Taika Waititi, the movie stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Jaimie Alexander, Chris Pratt, Karen Gillan, and Sean Gunn among others.
Thor: Love and Thunder is set to be released in theaters on July 8, 2022.
