Praise the Lord! Despite only average viewership so far, Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, and Sam Catlin's small-screen take on Preacher has been renewed for an expanded second season. Though the show has retained the vibe of the comics and been true to the characters (for the most part), the story has been heavily altered to serve as a prequel of sorts - so fans will be hoping to see Jesse and co. hit the road when the show returns in 2017.

Check out the press release below, and be sure to share your thoughts on Preacher in the usual place.

Twisted, Critically Acclaimed Supernatural Series Based On Cult Comic Book Franchise To Return With 13 Episodes In 2017. AMC Will Marathon The First Five Episodes Of The Current First Season On Thursday, June 30 – Heading Into A New Episode This Sunday

NEW YORK, NY – June 29, 2016 – AMC today announced that it has renewed its cinematic and critically acclaimed supernatural series “Preacher” for an expanded 13-episode second season, slated for 2017. The Sony Pictures Television-AMC Studios co-production is the #2 new series on cable this year among adults 18-49 and adults 25-54 and is currently averaging 3.3 million viewers per episode, including 1.9 million adults 25-54, in Nielsen live+3 ratings.

“‘Preacher’ is a special television program and we’re eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. “What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis’ graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary. We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond.”

This Thursday night, AMC will air a “Preacher” catch-up/DVR marathon of the first five episodes of the current season, starting at 9:00 p.m. and running through 2:35 a.m. Friday morning. The sixth episode appears on AMC this Sunday in the show’s regular timeslot at 9:00 p.m.

Did any one not see this coming? With how well it is doing it should have been a given, but this is good news still.

So far Preacher has been [frick]ing boring.
They completely miss what made the comic so great.
I wish they'd cancelled it and started again from scratch.

@JohnnyCloud - I read the comic series and the showrunners have said season one will end where the comic began

@JohnnyCloud - Sadly, I have to agree.

They are ignoring the comic books for the most part and all the stuff they are showing is boring af.

@JohnnyCloud - I want to love it, the premise sounds fantastic. But I record it because it plays when game of thrones does. Two weeks in a row I fall asleep about 40 minutes in. I'm gonna keep giving it a shot, I want to like it but I'll give it a few more weeks

@2pacman - it's pretty boring. Which is unfortunate, as I wanted to enjoy it. But about 15 mins in I zone out. So I have to rely on the "previously on" at the start of each episode in order to feel caught up. I'm trying to give it a full season to see if it catches, but so far it's yawn.
