Apple TV+ has debuted the first official trailer for Doug Liman's The Instigators, an upcoming heist thriller starring Academy Award-winners and Boston natives Matt Damon (Good Will Hunting; The Martian; The Departed) and Casey Affleck (Manchester by the Sea; Oppenheimer; The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford) in the lead roles as two thieves who, after a botched robbery, are forced to go on the run with their therapist (Academy Award-nominee Hong Chau).
The film's synopsis reads, "Rory (Damon) and Cobby (Affleck) are reluctant partners: a desperate father and an ex-con thrown together to pull off a robbery of the ill-gained earnings of a corrupt politician. But when the heist goes wrong, the two find themselves engulfed in a whirlwind of chaos, pursued not only by police, but also backwards bureaucrats and vengeful crime bosses. Completely out of their depth, they convince Rory’s therapist (Hong Chau) to join their riotous getaway through the city, where they must put aside their differences and work together to evade capture—or worse."
In addition to Damon and Affleck, the supporting cast features Hong Chau ("Dr. Donna Rivera"), Paul Walter Hauser ("Booch"), Michael Stuhlbarg ("Mr. Besegai"), Ving Rhames ("Frank Toomey"), Alfred Molina ("Richie Dechico"), Toby Jones ("Alan Flynn"), Jack Harlow ("Scalvo"), Ron Perlman ("Mayor Miccelli"), Caylee Cowan, Don DiPetta, Heidi Garza, David Gborie, Sidney Bottino, Tom Mariano, Richie Moriarty, and Rob Gronkowski.
This new film will reunite Damon with Liman for the first time since 2002's The Bourne Identity, which was a roaring critical and commercial success, grossing over $214 million globally on an estimated $60 million production budget. That feature ultimately led to three Damon-led sequels and a spinoff. An untitled sixth film is currently in development, with Damon expected to reprise his titular role.
This will be the seventh time Damon and Affleck have starred together, following Good Will Hunting, Gerry, Ocean's Twelve, Ocean's Thirteen, Interstellar, and Oppenheimer.
Through their Artists Equity banner, Damon also served as a producer on the project with Ben Affleck.
The Instigators will hit select theaters on August 2, and will start streaming, exclusively on Apple TV+, on August 9!
