After kickstarting the CW's DC TV universe at the start of the decade, star Stephen Amell has announced the series will end its run with an abbreviated ten-episode eighth season, set to air this fall.

Hot on the heels of Clark Gregg (Captain Marvel) strongly suggesting Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. would end after its seventh season, another popular comic book series is also bringing its run to a close as Stephen Amell, who plays the Emerald Archer, has announced Arrow will end its run on The CW after a shortened eighth season, set to air this fall.

In a joint statement, executive producers Greg Berlanti and Marc Guggenheim and showrunner Beth Schwarz said, "This was a difficult decision to come to, but like every hard decision we’ve made for the past seven years, it was with the best interests of Arrow in mind. We’re heartened by the fact that Arrow has birthed an entire universe of shows that will continue on for many years to come. We’re excited about crafting a conclusion that honors the show, its characters and its legacy and are grateful to all the writers, producers, actors, and — more importantly — the incredible crew that has sustained us and the show for over seven years."

The ten-episode final season will air this fall and will presumably feature at least one crossover episode as all of your favorite small-screen DC heroes, including The Flash (Grant Gustin) and Supergirl (Melissa Benoist), unite for Crisis on Infinite Earths.

In an emotional Facebook Live video following the announcement, Amell explained the decision to move on and bring this story to an end. He also seemingly teased that despite the series ending, this fall may not be the last time we see him suit up as the Green Arrow. "Something tells me even when I’m done, I won’t be gone. If you’ve watched the Arrowverse, you should understand that... I think it's been a good run. It’s no Supernatural, but it’s been a good run.

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the North China Sea. He returned home to Star City, bent on righting the wrongs done by his family and fighting injustice. As the Green Arrow, he protects his city with the help of former soldier John Diggle, computer-science expert Felicity Smoak, former protégé Roy Harper, brilliant inventor Curtis Holt, street-savvy Rene Ramirez and meta-human Dinah Drake. Oliver will find himself vulnerable in a way unlike ever before when a mysterious new enemy begins to unravel his work as Green Arrow, forcing him to redeem his name or risk losing everything.

Arrow features:
Stephen Amell as Oliver Queen/Green Arrow
Katie Cassidy as Laurel Lance/Black Siren
David Ramsey as John Diggle/Spartan
Emily Bett Rickards as Felicity Smoak
Echo Kellum as Curtis Holt/Mr. Terrific
Rick Gonzalez as Rene Ramirez/Wild Dog
Juliana Harkavy as Dinah Drake/Black Canary
Colton Haynes as Roy Harper/Arsenal
Audrey Marie Anderson as Lyla Michaels
Kirk Acevedo as Ricardo Diaz/Richard Dragon

HOLY SHIT. Damn, this is a really, really big shame. Arrow has overall been the best series in the Arrowverse, some seasons not so strong, but its given us several great seasons and it will be sad to see the show come to an end.

Big thanks to Stephen Amell (and crew) for making the show into what it is. The Arrowverse won't be the same without its emerald archer.

Arrow and SHIELD really kicked off this era of CBTV. Crazy how they both announced their final seasons today.

@PlusUltra - they really did, though I've got to give credit where credits due, Arrow led the charge.

Also, SHIELD didn't technically announce the show was ending after season 7, Clark Gregg just hinted at it. This announcemennt from Amell is final.

With Arrow ending, perhaps Oliver really will sacrifice himself during Crisis on Infinite Earths. That could be why he isn't around in the future, that would actually explain a lot regarding the season 7's flashforwards, and really solidify his legacy in the Arrowverse as the hero who puts others above himself.

I expect Amell to don the classic goatee for the final season. He had said in the past he would only do that in the final season.

@HeavyMetal4Life - On one hand, I feel like Arrow ending on a crossover would be a disservice to the show given that they'd have to share focus. But on the other hand, it'd act as a testament to what Arrow sparked.

@HeavyMetal4Life - Surprised season 8 is so short, I thought they would kill Oliver off in Crisis and maybe use the second half to focus completely on the future scenes, showing Oliver's legacy

@dracula - well I wonder if the show will begin airing earlier in the Fall than normal. There should be a couple episodes or so after Crisis to wrap up the legacy and everything.

@Nebula- yeah, there should be a couple episodes or so after the crossover.

@HeavyMetal4Life - maybe he finds a way to sacrifice himself in place of barry in the future newspaper. It would be cool for that to also work as a plot point on the flash. Maybe barry realizes hes supposed to have died there so now they're experiencing issues from that change in history.

@Origame - he made a deal with the Monitor.

@HeavyMetal4Life -
The crossovers usually take place during
Episode 8. Elseworlds took place during Episode 9 so as to allow the Flash it’s 100th episode to be it’s own thing a week
Before. Ollie does in the crisis and we get
A aftermath funeral/wake episode and then
a final episode wrapping up the fates of the
surviving characters. Pretty sure most will
show up on other Arrowverse shows as guests especially on a unified Earth.

@HeavyMetal4Life - This totally lines up with the theory that Crisis is going to be a multi-episode arc that goes beyond just the yearly crossover. People were wondering how can Ollie sacrifice himself during Crisis with the rest of the season left to go. Being a 10 episode season makes complete sense.
