CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS Was Going To Be Released Theatrically - Marc Guggenheim Reveals Why It Didn't Happen

The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover received rave reviews in 2019/2020, and executive producer Marc Guggenheim has today revealed why plans for it to be released theatrically were sadly scrapped.

The CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths was the Arrowverse's sixth crossover event and aired across five parts from December 2019 - January 2020.

The story played out across episodes of Supergirl, Batwoman, The Flash, Arrow, and Legends of Tomorrow, and featured plenty of fan-pleasing cameos. Those included Kevin Conroy as a live-action Batman, Brandon Routh's return as Superman, and Ezra Miller as The Flash (simpler times).

While it was made on a TV budget, Crisis on Infinite Earths received plenty of praise and delivered a much stronger take on the classic comic book story than this year's poorly-received animated movies.

Talking on his personal blog, Arrowverse architect Marc Guggenheim reflected on the event and confirmed there were once plans for the five-part story to receive a theatrical release.

"I don’t believe this is publicly known (again, statute of limitations) but we had been working with Warner Bros. to release all five hours of Crisis in movie theaters across the country," he explains. "The event - arranged through Fathom Events - was going to include special surprises like cast appearances and giveaways.

"[And] we’d also cut together a few bonuses that would have been screened in-between episodes and, yes, they would have included the deleted scenes - with all the VFX completed, the sound mixed, and the picture color-timed - that I’d mentioned," Guggenheim continued.

"At this point, you’re probably wondering why this event didn’t go forward. Well, the answer is that it was scheduled for April 2020. Covid ruins everything."

The deleted scenes he refers to reportedly featured Pariah (Tom Cavanagh) witnessing the destruction of Argo City and Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) being transformed into The Spectre.

One of the crossover's biggest moments came when Green Arrow was killed, a moment Stephen Amell expressed disappointment with in 2020 when he explained how the conditions on set negatively impacted his performance.

"They were trying to wrap Caity [Lotz] and Grant [Gustin] before I shot the coverage of the scene where I died. I blame no one for this, but this is a scene with me from Arrow that's taking place on Supergirl, with a Supergirl crew, with demands on both Grant and Caity. And they're trying to pull them so that Flash and Legends don't mess up their day the next day."

"Meanwhile, the f-cking Green Arrow was laying on a gurney trying to deliver his lines to something other than a f-cking tennis ball. So, there are lots of scenes where I'm acting and there just aren't other actors there, and that is just not an acceptable way of creating the best product, from my perspective."

Would you have watched Crisis on Infinite Earths on the big screen?

Oh , the headline made it seem like it was gonna be released ORIGINALLY in theatres but it actually was just gonna be a re-release until Co-Vid put a stop to it (and well everything in general).

Anyway seems like it could have been fun but I found the event enjoyable regardless, flaws & all (it bit off a little more then it could chew in terms of ambition imo but did enough well also).

I mean, if you don’t have anything nice to say, don’t say anything at all.

Thing is, this crossover was bad, and they ruined all the cameos with the exception of everyone's favorite Ezra, before they show aired. I remember constantly seeing articles about who will cameo, weeks before it aired.

I've rewatched this Crisis event a few times. I enjoy it but it's really not that good. The decisions they made such as including the CW Bat Woman and how they made Supergirl way stronger than Clark and other various story changes made it pretty boring. The CGI was also quite bad, as well as the writing. It's got all the problems of CW that led to the downfall of the whole universe, they basically feminized everything exactly like the last couple phases of the MCU.

Definitely not suitable for a cinema release, it was just about good enough for TV.

It'll be the year 3236 and we will still be hearing about the total embarrassment that was a completely overblown virus that shut down almost every facet of economy and entertainment because our super-duper trustworthy government entities told us to flip the switch and put Earth on pause because peak delulu.

Clicked in thinking it was gonna be revealed that as usual it was thwarted by none other than WB. So I was gladly surprised for once that it was because of a natural and sadly unvoidable thing that affected everything.

Sucks, it sounds like all was set and ready for it happen and in one moth before each show's respective Season finales aired back then. Guggie is right on that, COVID ruined everything and not just the crossovers for later.

If this isn't the clearest testament that the Arrowverse's "downfall" began due to the restrictions the new status quo imposed everyone in the business to navigate for the foreseeable future then IDK what it is. And it also can be seen as a reason why it's deserving of a 2nd wind now in today's better and safer filming environment. Stil the best Elseworlds in live-action we got. (Next to Geoff Johns' Stargirl and his plans to expand his Earth-2 sandbox corner)
