Much of the promotional material we've seen for Gotham's second season so far has focused on the 'Rise Of The Villains'. With the likes of Firefly, Tigress and Mr. Freeze all headed to the DC TV show, it seems like the writers are keen on exploring Batman's world famous rogues gallery - even if Bruce Wayne himself won't be suiting up to fight them anytime in the near future.
However, things haven't always been like that. Many of the show's early episodes had a 'villain-of-the-week' feel about them. The show's lead Ben McKenzie told EW that this was one of the things Season 1 got wrong in his eyes. "I think we made a mistake relatively early on in trying to introduce a villain and take care of that villain in one episode: catch them, send them to Arkham, do whatever," he confessed. "That was just a mistake. We should’ve never done it."
The former Southland actor has high hopes for the FOX series' sophomore run though. "The audience really wants to understand who these people are and live with them, sit with them and enjoy them," he claimed, "Whether they’re evil or good, they are entertaining. So that’s what we’re doing in season 2. [It’s] really kick ass. I think it’s exactly what the fans want to see."
Despite performing well in the ratings week-in-week-out, Gotham's been a divisive show amongst Batman fans so far. Could a new direction convince some of its critics to give it a second chance? Drop us your thoughts in the comments below!
Gotham Season 2 premieres Monday, September 21 on FOX.
