Big changes are taking place at The CW following the network's acquisition by Nexstar, and more casualties of those have now been revealed.
Chief among them is David Ramsey's Arrowverse series, Justice U. That would have seen the actor reprise his role as Arrow's John Diggle as he "embarks on a new mission to recruit five young metahumans to live undercover as freshmen at a prestigious university."
While the character is popular, even the most die-hard fans questioned why The CW would move forward with a series boasting such an odd premise. Well, it's not happening now and is no longer being developed by the network.
A female-led Zorro series, Jake Chang (based on the Archie Comics character of the same name), and Powerpuff Girls have also been scrapped.
"We’ve already given those back to the studios," The CW's President of Entertainment Brad Schwartz tells TV Line of the shows listed above, "so they’re free to develop those and sell them anywhere."
Chloe Bennet, Dove Cameron, Yana Perrault, and Donald Faison starred in a Powerpuff Girl pilot shot in 2021, though the decision was made to go back to the drawing board and try again because the first effort was "too campy." Now, we're guessing it won't happen at all, a shame considering it assembled a great cast.
As for DC TV shows Superman & Lois and Gotham Knights, we recently learned that only one of them is likely to survive. Asked about those and All American: Homecoming during a recent press conference, Schwartz said, "We love all [three] shows. We’ll be making decisions on those sooner [rather] than later."
"Superman & Lois, creatively, is very strong," he continued. "It does well in broadcast, it does well in digital...but it’s expensive [and] doesn’t make money for us. And we don’t have the rights to the prior seasons. You need to have a library [for people to find a show] and the prior seasons are [on HBO Max]."
Reading between the lines, we'd say the show's days are, unfortunately, numbered.
