[SPOILERS FROM THE WINTER FINALE AHEAD]
James Gordon: Fugitive. It has a nice ring to it, doesn't it? Showrunner Bruno Heller apparently thinks so, as that is the direction that the latter half of
Gotham's second season is headed. Last year's mid-season finale left off with James Gordon making the decision to step outside the law in order to protect Gotham City, resulting in him murdering Theo Galavan and evading arrest. That's where the second half of the season will pick up.
"[James Gordon]'s stepped over that moral line," Bruno Heller explained in an interview with TV Guide. "Gordon has made a terrible mistake which he's going to pay for. The biggest price he will pay is in his relationship with Lee Tompkins. Jim's essentially an honest man, so the need to have an honest relationship does betray him in the end."
So it seems that Gordon will lose his law enforcement career (for the time being anyway), his freedom and the love of his life. Of course, what this will mean for Gordon and Tompkins' unborn child is speculation at this point. However, Gordon won't be the only main character to experience further bad luck.
Oswald Cobblepot, better known as the Penguin, just can't catch a break. This season alone, he has had to deal with the death of his mother, a rivalry with Theo Galavan, a betrayal from his right hand man, and the loss of much of his vast criminal empire. Furthermore, even after the death of his mortal enemy, the Penguin's problems are far from over. Not only will he have to deal with a returning Butch Gilzean, but it seems that a new rivalry will brew with that of Professor Hugo Strange (portrayed by
Jurassic World's B.D. Wong). According to Bruno Heller:
"Dr. Hugo Strange has a profound effect on Penguin. He makes a new man out of him in many ways. Plus: Bruce Wayne will finally find out who killed his parents!"
We know from previous confirmations that Hugo Strange is connected to both the Indian Hill division of Wayne Enterprises, which is shown in earlier episodes to be behind nightmarish experiments performed on super-powered beings, and to Arkham Asylum. As for the man who killed Bruce Wayne's parents, the character Silver St. Cloud stated in a recent episode that it was none other than Matches Malone, who will be portrayed in future episodes by actor Michael Bowen. However, it is unknown if Cloud was telling the truth.
Gotham will return with brand new episodes on 29 February 2016, starting with a two episode storyline featuring the origin of the villainous Mister Freeze.
