Lanterns Season 2: DC Boss Says Series Will Only Return "If We Can Come Up With A Worthy Successor"

DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran has shared an update on a potential second season of Lanterns, promising that we will know whether or not the show will return by the end of the year...

Despite critical acclaim and strong viewership numbers, Lanterns has yet to be officially renewed for a second season.

A new writing team has been assembled in anticipation of the greenlight - Chris Mundy is expected to return as showrunner, without writers Damon Lindelof and Tom King; Vanessa Baden Kelly will be back, along with new scribes Christopher Cantwell, Nakkiah Lui, Zack Whedon, and Selwyn Seyfu Hinds - but it sounds like the show continuing for another run is far from guaranteed.

"This was one great season of television based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right?" DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran told Collider when asked for an update. "The thing that's most gratifying about this show and this season on HBO is that it's brought Green Lantern back into the conversation, into the public culture in a really positive fashion."

He added: "If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season."

Safran also said that we should know whether or not Lanterns will return by the end of the year.

Mundy recently revealed that some ideas for a second season have been discussed, and it sounds like, if the show is renewed, Lanterns will continue to be a primarily Earth-based series.

"It’s like we’ve tossed out a lot of different things. I mean, again, we want to treat it all—you know, we won’t be back in Rushville most likely unless something crazy happens in Rushville, you know, every 10 years. But you’re going to—it’s going to be an Earth-based story that we continue most likely."

"I mean, would you—we’ve shown that you can leave the planet, so that’s good, right?" he added. "But because of that, we want to make whoever’s here as sort of grounded and real as possible. Our idea was just to ground everything and then layer on the other layers." The writer continued, "But it’s just like, okay, are you with us? Great. Now we can expand. And it’s the same thing with introducing all the other Lanterns and stuff."

Even if the series isn't renewed, John Stewart's (Aaron Pierre) adventures will continue in Man of Tomorrow, but what about Hal Jordan?

Safran was asked if John charging the ring in the finale means that final shot of Halogram is the last we'll see of the veteran hero, and gave an intriquing response.

"I can't weigh in on what it means when [John] charges the ring at the end of the season"

Would you like to see more Lanterns? Let us know in the comments.

HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. The pilot episode is co-written by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, who are co-creators for the series. Mundy serves as showrunner. The first two episodes are directed by James Hawes, with Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel, and Alik Sakharov also tapped to direct. The series is executive produced by Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt, and Hawes. Based on the DC comic characters from Green Lantern.

The series stars Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, Jason Ritter, Ulrich Thomsen, Nathan Fillion, J. Alphonse Nicholson, and Jasmine Cephas Jones.

The series follows new recruit John Stewart (Aaron Pierre) and Lantern legend Hal Jordan (Kyle Chandler), two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.

For Season 2 maybe they'll actually make a Green Lantern show this time.

I hope there’s a second season. Very much enjoyed the first one. It’d be cool the see Sinestro make a yellow ring.

Maybe have someone write the show as a sci fi police force spectacle instead of a sci fi channel show.

Add a dash of corporate thriller, with Ferris Aircraft attempting to use John for expansion. Perhaps Carol tried to use Hal Jordan in the same way in the past, but her plan failed.

personal opinion here: DC brought in a conglomerate of writers who chucked crap at a wall of stories and combined what stuck into one. Then called it "cinematic." The show had great moments, but not enough to warrant a second season written in the same tune. at the end of the series, I didn't care what John did next, so far he's lacking the qualities that make him a hero. it'll be interesting to see how Man of Tomorrow redeems his character.

I do want to add that I really enjoyed Kyle and Aaron's performances, but struggled liking their characters, and maybe that was by design from the writers

They'll come up with a worthy successor if they explain that this happened on an alternate universe like the latest Batman and and reboot Green lantern into the current Gunn universe. Guess that's not possible since Jon is going to be in MOT. As it stands Jon coming out of this heavily polarized serious hateful universe is going contrast significantly with MOT. He's going to be directed as this good guy, do no wrong, get along well with everyone including white teammates including Clark. Is he going to tell Clark his history and what he did to Hal, steal his ring and allow Hals killer to walk away free? Does someone like Jon even belong in the JLA considering everything? Is Jon even the hero type considering the way he's portrayed? Or is he only interested in his own agenda? He's distanced himself from the Corp and has his own oath. Let's the bad guy get away. Beats up and shows open disrespect and displays arrogant thoughts of superiority to his mentor.

"...based on a property that had been somewhat irradiated since 2011, right?"

Um, at least the 2011 GL property actually had GL CONSTRUCTS! There were more constructs in the 5 minute training of Hal on OA scene than in the entire 8 hrs of the Lanterns series. So StFU

TheVisionary25 - 10/15/2026, 9:32 AM
I see that they are going the Penguin route in that the writers are convening and trying to come up with a story that they find atleast as compelling as S1 which is fair imo…

Hopefully that happens so we can get more of John post MOT sooner then later thus fingers crossed!!.

I think a potentially interesting route to go is have Sinestro as the new-co lead of the season as him and John potentially investigate another Earth based mystery with cosmic ties (hopefully with a bit more costumes , constructs and actual aliens) whilst developing the new Lantern John has and the fear elements inside it.

Hell , this could be a way to also bring back Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan via flashbacks to Sinestro’s time with him etc!!.

King and Lindelof wrote them into a corner where the poor saps assigned to season two literally cannot adapt any of the comic stories. Then they took their paycheck and quit.

It's no wonder they can't come up with anything. Hal is gone so that a genocidal AI can walk free. And John is Sinestro Corps. Where would you even go from there?

Sounds like a stupid thing to say. If you have a critical and viewership hit on your hands (and even the controversial crowd keeps it in the news feeds), you'd say we are 100% working on season 2 right now. Instead, you're going to fastrack shows and movies nobody is excited for ahead of it. Does this leadership team at DC know what they're doing?

The only story worth telling would be Guy gathering Kilowog, Katma Tui, Ch'p, Salakk, and Arisia to go take down Sinestro Junior.

"If we're able to come up with what we believe to be a worthy successor to a beloved and great first season, that's what's going to dictate whether there's a second season."

If you weren't so sure about making a TV series and only just wanted one season...then why tf wasn't it just a movie if you're not sure of what's next?

Seems like a complete waste of time and money if you spent on 8 episodes and not know exactly whether or not you want a Season 2 or have it mapped out. Shit, it was better received than Supergirl but are you guys scared to let James Gunn know because you don't wanna upset his sensitive feelings?

This is the same pitfall bullshit that Disney just did with their D+ shows, when all these streamers want this high ass expectation for these shows that almost seems like an impossible feat.

If you were already going to skimp your ass on the budget anyways, might as well have just been a movie. Trust me, the response for a new GL movie would have been 10x better than the response for a CLAYFACE movie.
