SUPERMAN & LOIS: Emmanuelle Chriqui, Wolé Parks, Inde Navarrette & Four More Not Returning For Season 4

While we knew Superman & Lois season four would get a major budget cut, it looks like the entire cast is being gutted, with seven series regulars not expected to return full-time next year.

Shocking news fresh off the WB lot this afternoon as Deadline is reporting that Emmanuelle Chriqui (Lana Lang), Dylan Walsh (Sam Lane), Erik Valdez (Kyle Cortez), Inde Navarrette (Sarah Cortez), Wolé Parks (John Henry Irons), Tayler Buck (Natalie Irons), and Sofia Hasmik (Chrissy Beppo) are not returning as series regulars for the recently announced season four.

While there is optimism that the seven will recur and/or guest star throughout next season, their respective returns will depend on their individual interest in reprising their parts as well as availability in their schedules. With next season likely to be the last before James Gunn ushers in the DCU with Superman: Legacy in 2025, fans should hope the longtime cast members are keen on closing out their character arcs.

The returning series regulars for season four are the Kent family, consisting of Tyler Hoechlin (Clark Kent/Superman), Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois Lane), Michael Bishop (Jonathan Kent), and Alex Garfin (Jordan Kent).

Michael Cudlitz (Lex Luthor), who will make his long-awaited debut as Superman's archnemesis next week, has been upped to series regular status for next season, pretty much confirming that he will indeed be the fourth and presumably final season's big bad.

Superman & Lois was renewed for a ten-episode fourth season earlier this week, under the caveat that there would be significant budget cuts, including a reduction in series regulars and a lower special effects budget.

Check out the new preview for episode twelve, titled "Injustice," below:

"Injustice" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-14, LV) (HDTV)

MICHAEL CUDLITZ "THE WALKING DEAD" GUEST STARS - Lois (Elizabeth Tulloch) and Clark (Tyler Hoechlin) clash with Jordan (Alex Garfin) over his carelessness around using his powers in public, while Jonathan (Michael Bishop) struggles with Kyle's (Erik Valdez) change in behavior at the firehouse. Meanwhile, Sarah (Inde Navarrette) grows frustrated with Lana (Emmanuelle Chriqui) after she accidentally makes things more complicated with Jordan. And finally, after seventeen years behind bars, Lex Luthor (guest star Michael Cudlitz ("The Walking Dead" set to be released from prison. Sudz Sutherland directed the episode written by Michael Narducci (#312). Original airdate 6/20/2023.

@newhire13 - I just restarted season 1. I'm bracing myself for the new Jordan already. I really like this first Jordan. Now I'll brace for all these folks too.

@newhire13 - This is good news for me, I didn't like those characters and kept wondering why the show was bothering with them when their stories all stopped being interesting or added anything to the show besides stretching out the ridiculous drama by the end of season 1. I dropped the show a long time ago but I'll be checking out this new season cause of this news.

@newhire13 - Yeah. The family is probably gonna movie back to Metropolis to give reason why majority of the cast isnt there

Personally I think it's best for the show the Cushings outlived there usefulness but I am admittedly disappointed about the Irons, Chrissy and Sam being downgraded.

What's the point then??? Should have just canceled all DC CW shows and have all DC properties be a Max exclusive.

@TheShape9859 - The show is about Superman & Lois. As long as you have those two characters, you're fine. no one is watching for Lana or Sam, tbh.

So we're back to 90's Lois and Clark level effects?

Why even bother? The last thing a show or movie featuring Superman needs is a reduced budget for effects, especially in this day and age.

@Opticblast - hopefully the loss of a larger cast counters any possible effect this could have on the effects

Yeah, seems like they gave them the bare minimum just to wrap things up...

OT: @NateBest, not a single article about Romita Sr?

At first I was happy the show was saved but most of the cast only appearing in a few and possibly not any episodes is a huge let down. Plus a cut back on the SFX is starting to make me think why bother.

You can tell the budget was lowered and that they’re definitely trying to stretch it out for the final season. At least the ones whose roles were cut down still have a job. Having a little work is better than no work at all. 🤷‍♂️

I knew this was coming, saving an expensive superhero show that actually requires money to function wasn't gonna come with a heavy price and this is: losing pretty much the entire Smallville cast that makes Smallville feel like an actual smalltown setting. Who the hell are Clark and his family going to interact with now without half of their cast?

No more Smallville Gazzete that Lois helped Chrissy with. What is gonna happen to Jon at the firehouse ever since Kyle took him under his wing? No more Lana and Lois friendship nor with Clark especially now that all the family knows about him being Superman. Yeah we got Lex but it'd be fun to see the Kents trying to protect their friends from him. Stakes have been in this way absolutely lost.

We also lose the Irons after they've been through hell. Sayonora to the friendship between Natalie and Sarah and with the brothers and also her new bond with grandpa Sam Lane. No more father and daughter scenes between Lois and Sam either like the ones we got with them in 3x08 where he cheered her up to keep digging on the Mannheims. No more Superman and D.O.D. dynamic either because grandpa won't be back. No more badass Superman and Steel team ups.

This isn't even counting on the budget cuts for the VFX.

I hope Todd Helbing feels proud of the price it took to renew the show all because he ignored the warnings and chose to go with a cliffhanger in S3 instead of just wrapping things up like everyone was doing just in case. He just essentially got 7 people fired. In the middle of a writers strike where that is nowhere close to ending and where it is difficult to find new acting gigs.

The only people that I can see celebrating these are the irritating and half-delusional Clois fans who hate the guts of Lana's actress and her character out of the delusion that she wanted to be the female lead and shit like the showrunner being in love with her, conspiracy crap stuff.

Good luck Helbing, you're gonna need it. I'd be surprised to not see a decrease in the ratings as well.

This is the same damn thing CBS is doing to one of their sitcoms, literally. Only difference is that they cut down ALL of the cast except the 2 leads.

Disgusting and awful really. I feel bad for everyone, especially for Inde Navarrete (Sarah) and Tayler Buck (Natalie) since they are new actors and it's more difficult for them to find new roles.

@NinnesMBC - There's gonna be new characters in the show, actors who are on a much smaller salary.
NinnesMBC
NinnesMBC - 6/14/2023, 9:57 PM
@RockReigns - Really doubt it. The conditions were that they would have to face budget cuts INCLUDING reducing the cast. It'd be pointless to introduce new characters with only 10 episodes.
RockReigns
RockReigns - 6/14/2023, 10:56 PM
@NinnesMBC - Side characters, like a freak of the week Smallville-type.
KelvTwelve
KelvTwelve - 6/15/2023, 8:54 AM
@NinnesMBC - I think the only thing they can do, idk if they can with the budget - is relocate the show back to Metropolis. It's the only way you can explain why the majority of the cast is not returning, and they can use a lot of the sets they already used for the origin story. Lex Luthor has been released, Superman can't screw around in Smallville anymore, John Henry Irons takes over the Kent farm and protects Smallville while Superman has to go back to his iconic battleground and Jordan has to step up his training and prepare for the worst.

Kill off Clark in the final episode as Jordan is ready to take on the mantle and reunites with the Smallville side of the cast.

@ModHaterSLADE - Of the side characters he was defiantly the best. If they kept any of them I would have wanted him to stay. I bet his suit's CGI expense had something to do with it.

Well here's a BTS picture of Michael Cudlitz' Lex Luthor with his homies-I mean his henchmen, including Gretchen Kelly who in the comics is his physician. It's probably from the next episode 3x12.

Reports say Dylan Walsh was offered a 3 episode recurring role

Guessing they are being offered something similar, cant just have them disappear

Reports also say the lease on the set is coming up

Could see them moving back to Metropolis. Would be an easy way to explain why everyone’s sudden reduced screen time
