The CW's New Boss Admits He's Unsure Whether DC Still Has A Place On The Network

The CW's new President, Brad Schwartz, has addressed the Arrowverse's future on the network, confirming he's unsure whether the DC brand will still have a home there. Find more details after the jump!

The CW hasn't been profitable for quite some time, and with an average viewer age of 58, it's clear that changes need to be made. Those are currently ongoing, with mass layoffs and a big shift in leadership.

Brad Schwartz begins calling the shots on behalf of new owners Nexstar starting this month, and all signs point to The CW moving away from scripted dramas. As a result, the future of shows like The Winchesters and Walker is very much in doubt, while The Hollywood Reporter confirms both Gotham Knights and Superman & Lois join them as being "on the bubble."

That means they could be saved or cancelled at any given moment, though the latter option currently seems more likely.

Talking to the trade, Schwartz was asked directly if the DC brand has a future on The CW, to which he bluntly responded, "I don’t know yet." This year has already seen the cancellation of Batwoman, Legends of Tomorrow, and The Flash, and with Warner Bros. keen to move DC content to HBO Max, it's easy enough to see where things are probably going.

"It was an exceptionally successful company under the old business model; CBS and Warner Bros. made a lot of money on the shows," the executive says. "They got to make shows from Gossip Girl to Vampire Dairies, Riverdale and The Flash that broke through in culture. There was a business model there that worked. And now it’s a different business model."

"Now we need to run a broadcast network that is profitable. So, it’s going to take a bit of reinvention, re-thinking...[and] creating a brand and content that brings in a lot of audiences, that works for the stations and that can be monetized properly. CW has a really strong brand...[but] some of these shows aren’t very profitable."

The Arrowverse had a good run, so we can't mourn for it too much. However, seismic changes are clearly coming to The CW, and that could mark an end for Gotham Knights and Superman & Lois. The latter may end up being saved given how standalone in nature it is, but when fans already seem unsure of that Batman-themed series, we can see the axe falling soon.

As always, keep checking back here for updates.

CW haven't got the dough. Neither does HBO it seems.

I'd rather this upcoming season be the last than to watch three more seasons with half the budget it used to have.

See Arrow and Flash.

End on a high.

Obviously there is no future for them at The CW. That network is completely changing their programming (to something I’ll never watch). I’d love to see Superman and Lois (which is great) moved to another channel. I doubt it though. I think they are going to move toward a more integrated movie and TV model. It hurts less now that we know that Clark Kent Superman has a future on the big screen. Hopefully the character of Stargirl can also join him there soon.

Say what you want about Berlanti... But he managed to make a cohesive universe on a TV budget, when DC still hadn't figured out how to make one with a movie budget.

That takes talent. Now I'm not saying all the DC CW shows were good lol, heck, I've only seen some of the Flash and Superman & Lois.

Still, Berlanti was able to build this in a cave. With a box of scraps.

@KWilly - I see this gif and then think about how they’d go from this type of shot then directly into these characters talking about their petty soap opera drama.

These shows were all cock tease.

@philinterrupted - I really wonder if that sort of crap was CW mandated. The shows had some great fight scenes and imaginative (if not kind of primative) CGI.

@KelvTwelve - I remember trying to watch one of the huge crossover events. There’s was a huge battle eminent, and you have characters talking about relationships. I couldn’t stand it.

@philinterrupted - Because their interpersonal struggles, what you call "soap opera drama" is what makes them relatable people besides just super heroes.

What would they have required to not be "cock tease" for you?

@KWilly - Not including Berlanti in their efforts to help them create a cinematic universe as cohesive as the Arrowverse on TV is a mistake IMO. Even as a consultant, one never knows.

Then again I like that he can stay on TV. I've enjoyed DC TV content most of my life than the movies anyway.

The sum of their parts always excelled together into new heights when they teamed up. And it was annually on top of it. Outstanding.

@NinnesMBC - don’t take my comment as saying drama is unwelcome. Of course you need drama to be able to care about characters. I’m talking about the timing of these conversations. When the world is ending it’s not time to have a matter of fact conversation about your dating life.

And soap opera drama is another tear. Don’t pretend you don’t know what I talking about.

@philinterrupted - also there a difference between drama and what cw was doing. You can write mature drama for your characters in their early 30s that doesn’t come off like it was written by the authors of twilight and 50 shades of grey

I never watched this show but based on the CWverse I’d say get rid of it all. Start a new with better shows, please hire writers that have never done a cw show.

@slickrickdesigns - I think the problem is money. They would need an adequate budget in order to do this.

@slickrickdesigns - It won't be on CW any more though there going away from scripted tv and going full unscripted reality bullshit.

Not sure how there going to make money that way.

@Matador - I can’t say dat, I know tons that dropped it at that point but for me JDM was too cool. The end of that storyline should’ve been the of the show. I never did finish the comics, I may someday out of curiosity but I just couldn’t care less right now
