THE FLASH: Barry Gets A New Power In The New Promo & Photos For Season 7, Episode 2: "The Speed of Thought"

Almost exactly one year after production was forced to halt due to the global coronavirus outbreak, The Flash is officially back on our screens, and tonight's premiere proved to be quite an eventful hour as Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and his team put a dangerous plan in motion in order to get the Artificial Speed Force to work, ultimately resulting in Nash (Tom Cavanagh) making the ultimate sacrifice.

Now, while things are looking grim for all the Wellses, showrunner Eric Wallace has confirmed to TV Line that Cavanagh isn't leaving the series.

"Fans of Tom Cavanagh, you should keep watching this show.’ Just because somebody’s dead doesn’t mean they don’t have plenty more to do.

Next week's installment will pick up almost immediately after the events of tonight's premiere with us learning more about the fate of Iris' (Candice Patton) email. Elsewhere, it looks like Barry will be gaining a new superpower - speed thinking - which will undoubtedly prove to be extremely useful as he tries to rescue his wife from the MirrorVerse.

"The Speed of Thought" - (8:00-9:00 p.m. ET) (TV-PG, V) (HDTV)

BARRY GAINS A NEW SKILL - When Barry (Grant Gustin) suddenly gains the power of speed thinking, he attempts to use his new gift to save Iris (Candice Patton). While Barry is thrilled with his new power, Cisco (Carlos Valdes) is hesitant to trust it. Meanwhile, Eva (guest star Efrat Dor) must face a shattering truth. Stefan Pleszczynski directed the episode written by Jonathan Butler & Gabriel Garza (#702). Original airdate 3/9/2021.

Barry Allen lived a normal life as a perpetually tardy C.S.I. in the Central City Police Department. Barry's life changed forever when the S.T.A.R. Labs Particle Accelerator exploded, creating a dark-matter lightning storm that struck Barry, bestowing him with superspeed and making him the fastest man alive - The Flash. After a thrilling cliffhanger last season which saw the new Mirror Master victorious and still-at-large in Central City, The Flash must regroup in order to stop her and find a way to make contact with his missing wife, Iris West-Allen. With help from the rest of Team Flash, which includes superheroes Caitlin Snow, Cisco Ramon, Ralph Dibny, and Nash Wells, as well as the Flash's adoptive father Joe West, Meta-Attorney Cecile Horton, tough cub reporter Allegra Garcia and brilliant tech-nerd Chester P. Runk... Flash will ultimately defeat Mirror Master. But in doing so, he'll also unleash an even more powerful and devastating threat on Central City: one that threatens to tear his team - and his marriage - apart.

The Flash returns with a brand new episode on March 9

“Speed thinking”!? Ok... why not?

@WruceBayne - They did something with that in the New 52, I think the idea was essentially he can either think super fast (and run through every scenario of how to deal with a situation) or move super fast but if he used it to much or for too long on his mind he could get sucked into a never ending stream of thought like some kind of super AHDH daydream thing. It sound ridiculous to explain but it was kinda cool in practice

@Ha1frican - a thought is already lightening fast, his thoughts are faster than that?

@WruceBayne - Yeah essentially, it applies the speed force to those electrical impulses and speeds them up exponentially but it also has a drawback in that by doing that he can actually in a way daydream his way into danger. Like he’ll get so lost in thoughts and scenarios he’ll actually just stand there and forget to move if he not careful

@WruceBayne - Here’s and example of how it was represented in the comics. Basically he learned to use the speed force on his brain and so he could almost like Doctor Strange/Sherlock Holmes it and run through every scenario and permutation of a given action in his mind but if he wasn’t careful he would just get stuck in all the probabilities and forget reality and almost got shot in the head bc of it

OT: but watching Superman and Lois and the budget/tone/and just everything else about it is so jarring to see after viewing the Flash, it’s crazy. Anywho, not a bad episode..hope this season is better than S6 (which was an improvement imo) over the last two seasons

On Another Topic:

Missed Batwoman this week. Would have still rather have a recast Kate, but think Ryan is starting to grow on me outside of a few moments. For now, my feelings are on her are the same as my feeling on Olicity for most of Arrow, would much rather have something else, but its not bad and I can live with it as long as the the writing isnt bad.

Surprise ending to this weeks Black Lightning. Doubt Jen is dead, no way they would kill her in such a pointless way. If she is dead, eh she has always been one of my least favorite heroes in the arrowverse

The Wells plot wouldve definitely been better last season if it didnt get cut short. Seemed more like a finale story than a premiere. That and it just felt weird with the new characters instead of Caitlyn and Cisco.

Creating his suit from speed force energy, nice.

Just judging by these photos, I think this is the best his suit has ever looked. Dare I say it, even better than his season 4 suit.

I’m watching s7 now and I’m so lost. I fell off somewhere at the beginning of 7. I don’t know who these new people are. It still feels like the same stuff. Barry loses his power blah blah blah. I think this should be it’s last season. Superman’s quality is really going to ruin these other shows for people too.

Solid start to the season! Felt like just another episode from season 6, which is good since that was a major step back in the right direction quality wise. Didn't expect them to have solved the artificial speedforce issue so quickly but nice to have that out of the way. Also, Barry's suit looks good, and I like the new mask.

I honestly didn't miss the "main" Flash team here, I thought that this "new" team worked well. I didn't expect Nash to die in this episode, let alone for us to lose all the Wells (though I'm sure they will somehow come back), but I did actually enjoy all of the Wells moments in this episode, a nice blast from the past. Also found it to be a very interesting twist that Eva was a the actual mirror duplicate.

The Cecile subplot I found subpar, usually her subplots are on the mediocre side of things.
